I checked in promptly and was brought back from the waiting room without delay. I explained that I had a very sore throat, difficulty swallowing, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, a low-grade fever, and had recently been in contact with two coworkers who tested POSITIVE for strep. Despite this, I was only prescribed Claritin and a nasal spray.
The next day, feeling worse and now running a fever, I went to Fast Med Urgent Care for a second opinion. The nurse practitioner was warm, attentive, and took the time to listen to my concerns. Their NP performed a rapid strep test, and it turned POSITIVE instantly. I was promptly prescribed Amoxicillin and Motrin, and within 24 hours, my symptoms dramatically improved — no more fever or painful swallowing.
Ironically, Express Care called today to tell me my strep cultures were “normal.” I appreciate the kindness of the staff, but I’m very concerned that a clear case of strep was missed, delaying appropriate treatment and potentially exposing others.
Recommendation: Use more sensitive strep tests
