Education Management Corporation (EDMC) Age and ethnic discrimination

Before you spend your money on one of the EDMC schools you should have an idea where your money is going. If you are an American Citizen and/or over 55 this is not the place to work. I was pushed so hard that I was forced to take a medical leave and was terminated within 2 weeks of returning to work. My immediate manager was a person who flew off the handle at me when he couldn't understand what I was trying to say. Maybe a better grasp of the English language would have helped. The person who hired me used to have me come in his office and he would launch into tirades about how stupid other managers in the company were and liberally lace his comments with filthy language. The best part was when he called me at home and would yell so loud that my family could hear him. Why was I terminated? Because of a gesture which was unacceptable. No warnings, no conversations about the incident, you're terminated. Of course this was after being told that contrary to my 30+ years in the IT industry and numerous excellence awards on my desk and walls that I was regarded by my managers as "Having ZERO confidence that I could perform the task." A few months prior I had received a "solid performer" work review. One manager referred to me as an "old bald guy" sight unseen. Yes, I am old, but am 6'3", 225 pounds with a full head of natural brown hair, a little gray around the edges. I also am a 4th degree black belt and until recently a girls basketball coach.
All that aside I have more than likely been replaced by a $72 an hour foreign consultant who by contract gets flown wherever they want on weekends including Disneyland, SeaWorld and Las Vegas. Like 90% of the department I worked in. So if you're considering working for EDMC or attending one of their colleges I'd seriously consider where most of their money goes to and in a time of record unemployment in the USA.

Are you employed? Are you over 60? Where can I go? I have 5 current headhunters working on getting me employed. I do a dozen applications a day at least and with my extensive IT, Video, Graphics and general technical expertise what is keeping me from getting hired? This is my daily routine for the past 2 months, 4-5 hours researching and applying. And you talk about positive energy. In all my years in this industry this is the first time I've EVER complained on a site. I usually find a way around issues and just solve them. The fact that I actually have posted is a testament to the amount of professional disgust I feel about this company and several people there. My issue started with refusing to accept that a SINGLE SQL procedure that took 5 days to run couldn't be improved. I took one part of the process which took almost 3 hours to run and got it down to around 2 minutes. That threatened the high priced consultant's abilities and the management protecting them.
Walk a mile in my shoes before you speak about sour grapes

I worked for EDMC and Age Discrimination (+other protective categories) is what several of us experienced. I will suggest that ifyou have proof of "disparate treatment", examples of pretext to hide either the real matter, you should file a complaint with EEOC. They are very good at listening to your complaints but make sure you have enough factual proof.Check the web and find articles on age discrimination. It would help you associate your experience with those example and probably recal the traumatic experience *(many times our brian would block them as defense mechanism).

The Chandler location is much like many of the for-profit companies. The environment is to push enrollments at any cost and pretend that the student and stock holder is int he best interest. For these managers the long-term revenue is less important than the short-term which is part of the political problems with these companies. I will say this from personal experience, that entire department is filled with very youthful individuals. You do not reach success their by just working hard. You be a little dirty. This means not questioning unethical practices, this means participating in a pattern of discrimination if it will save a larger groups jobs or push out someone the great whole views as a threat, and understanding that your success is defined by your leads which are heavily controlled internally. When you do someone that might hurt the status quo short-term revenue or if you are a liability from discrimination (YES EVEN IF YOUR A COMPLETE VICTIM), they take away your leads, lower your tiers, or utilize negative mobbing techniques to push you out. My friend hang in there. Many of us have tried to change it, but the ethical people get crapped on in many of the companies. Hopefully someone in power will care someday.

Sounds unfortunate and a bit like sour grapes. My experience is that high performing people that get caught up in unfortunate circumstances focus on where they are going with an incredible amount of positive energy. They don't go to complaint message boards and promote negativity regardless of their feelings. I hope things work out for you. I would recommend that you focus on where you want to go versus where you have been.
