Edgar Hughston Builder - Poor workmanship during initial construction lead to major hardwood flooring issues that after multiple attempted repairs have not been resolved
Poor workmanship during initial construction lead to major hardwood flooring issues that after multiple attempted repairs have not been resolved. About two and a half years after having my home built I noticed some discoloration and texture change in one of the hardwood floor planks between my stove and sink. Gradually it went from one board to two then to three then four. In a perfect line which lead me to suspect a water leak. Plumber inspected and found no leak. Moisture expert inspected and said the levels of moisture were in fact elevated throughout entire living area but especially in the area of discoloring. Contacted HH. They came out promptly and stated that apparently the electrical was not ran between the garbage disposal and the stove so they had to bust up the foundation, run the wiring and then re-pour the concrete and must have not allowed enough time for it to cure prior to laying the hardwood floors. We had a box of original flooring and they had Atlanta flooring come out to replace the damaged wood. Immediately we began having issues with the new and surrounding wood splintering and popping when we stepped on it. They come out once again and shoot glue under the planks and put wood filler in the cracking pieces. Immediately the wood filler begins turning loose and falling out and floors start popping again. Once again HH comes out and says they will replace the wood again however since it had been four plus years since the house was built they were unable to locate the original floors and instead found a "close match." Upon bringing the replacement wood out I immediately noticed numerous differences between the old and new. The new was a different color, boards were different lengths than old planks, new boards were much thicker than the old ones, old flooring had numerous appearances of "knots" whereas the new flooring had none. I instantly told both HH and Atlanta flooring that i was NOT happy with the new floors however they gave me their word that if they put them down and we were not satisfied they would make it right! My response was the only thing that was going to truly make it right was to stop "fixing and replacing" and install new flooring throughout the entire space so that it would be uniform and back to the original quality that we paid for when we purchased the home. They reassured me I would be pleased and again stated they would do what needed to be done to make us satisfied so I allowed them to once again replace the pieces. Before they even finished the installation I told them that I was NOT satisfied! The height difference in the wood is very noticeable to the point where you stump your toes on it when barefooted. The color difference stands out like a sore thumb! The lack of "knots" in the new wood up against the old wood is very noticeable and rare replaced wood has already started splintering and popping when you walk on it. Now we are basically being told to live with it! They've offered to come out once again and put wood filler in the splintered pieces but I am not ok with continuing to "duck tape" my floors! If this was from abusive wear and tear or even just cheap materials I'd be a little more understanding but it's not! They've admitted to less than good workmanship from the ground phase of construction in this area and I feel strongly that the entire floor needs to be replaced back to original state. My husband and I both have lost multiple days of pay from our jobs trying to resolve this issue.
