I have been to one of the hospital in Durban when I was not well and my doctor wanted to admit me and do the epidural block the next day but my admission was denied by the Discovery case manager who is placed in that hospital.
On the 19 January 2026 I regret why did I even join Discovery Medical Aid because they have placed case manaers who are only thinking for the scheme but not the clients. I could barely walk due to lower back pain, I went to the GP who referred me to the Neuro surgeon. I have been taking painkillers since last year and did MRI and. Xrays which shows some problems with my back. I did explain to the case manager that the painkillers are no longer helping me, and my legs are locking and I couldn't bend but she insisted that I go home and come back the next day for the procedure. And she also said Discovery will send a nurse to administer medication at home. I told her that is a process yet I was suffering at that time but she still refused me admission.
To my greatest disappointment because it was my first time needing admission since I joined them 3 years ago, the scheme is supposed to access if you have been abusing the scheme or not.
Case managers are now able to oppose what the specialists is deciding all because the scheme want to control the overuse of medical aid money and save costs.
When you join the scheme they say 100% hospital admission but when you fall sick you get sent away. What am I paying for then? Mind you im not even on the lowest plan. Im on Essential Delta Saver Plan.
