Lady Of America Just pay us, who cares about the rest

Lady of America is not for everyone. My advice is to not sign a contract there. If you are unhappy or have a suggestion the management really is not interested in hearing it. Their monthly dues are too high for what you get. They are usually located in a shopping centre and are very small. The employees do not speak to you when you walk in the door. The clubs are advertised as being for all women of all shapes and sizes and or ages. They also advertise that you are not just a number and that they will call you by name. Not true. Since the clubs are small you tend to get little clicks or groups. So High School and juvenile right! I recommend larger clubs where everyone is treated well and in a professional manner. Beware of who is running the club and take advantage of the week free to see what it is like first. Check out the classes, employees and the clientele. Because when you sign that contract it is written in stone until it expires.

The location I go to makes you wipe down the equipment while on the circuit! Meanwhile the manager, or whoever is behind the desk, doesn't do a thing but play on the computer and talk of the phone.

I have had the worst experience with the one in Miami Lakes but I have no choice but to continue going since they have me stuck on the contract:
1) When I fist signed up I explained that I do not live in Miami on a full time basis and that I needed a month to month. The young girl assured me it was not a contract and that it was month to month. Next thing I know they say it is for 36 months and there is no way out and Carmen, the manager actually said, "Well, you should have read the contract." I guess I should have...trusting the girl who clearly explained it as otherwise is not enough...
2) I emailed Carmen three times and she only responded once to tell me she would be responding to my email. It has been over three months and she has yet to answer any of my emails.
3) I was stopped at the door last month told that my monthly payment was not made. (I am on auto-pay out of my checking account.) I had 5 minutes to run to my trainer session so I told the girl at the front desk I would take care of it as soon as my workout was done. She refused me entry into the gym and said I could not go in until after I paid. I explained to her it must be some sort of mistake because I have more than enough in my account and it always comes out of there but that I had to hurry or miss my scheduled trainer appointment in the gym. She was rude and singlemindedly refused so I had to just go in and do my workout and tell her to investigate the issue and get back to me so I can help fix it. She was so rude and even threatened to call the police on me to get me out of the gym. She treated me like a common thief and I was so insulted.
When I explained that I suspected that the problem was that Washington Mutual was changing over to Chase Manhattan and that they were sending new cards out she said, "No, because you are the only one with this problem and there are other Washington Mutual clients." She actually followed me to the treadmill to harass me, tell me this and then tell me she was calling the police. Wow.
I called the home office and explained the situation.
I also called my bank and IN FACT they said they had sent me a new debit card that showed Chase instead of WAMU. I went home and got the new card, which I did find in my mail box, and called it into the home office.
3) I placed a complaint to Heidi in the home office, who was very empathetic and nice, and she said she would forward it on. She did and later followed up with me telling me Carmen said she would call me back. It has been over three weeks since Heidi told me that and still Carmen has not called me or answered my calls.

I AM STUCK THERE NOW...and I regret it... :(
...watch out.

Lady Of America Membership

I don't want to be in a 3 years automatic membership payments, but lady of America put me in that way without my sign and consent. That's no fair! They bring to me a # for Spanish client services, but nobody answers me. I need to cancel my membership, but I don't know how. They want my money for three years, and I'm not going to pay for that, I don't want to go any more. They told me that I need to communicate with National Fitness. I'm not going to pay for something that I'm not going to use.

Lady of America did not post my payment of $144.90 and when I sent them the proof (mind you I sent it 5 times to five different reps) that I had already payment they sent me to collections. Now I’m stuck in collections and cannot get out till I pay $144.90 again with late fees added. Customer service is a joke they don’t know anything and the collection agency knows even less. I mean if they can’t make important decisions why put them there they should just have an answering service that said "there is nothing that I can do", " I don’t know how to help you with this". I just want them to tell collections that it was already paid is that so hard. I really don’t know how to handle this problem, what should I do, I have the proof that I have paid all my bills but no one cares, any suggestions.

I joined LOA in 2007 and then moved away and sent them a letter stating that I had moved and would be cancelling my contract because there was no LOA where I lived. They have been still deducting my membership for over 3 years and sent my account to National Fitness when i started to dispute the withdrawls. National Fitness told me tom stop disputing the withdrawls because they are not getting paid and keep adding that amount to my balance. I think this is the worst company I have had to deal with, very unprofessional, would not recommend them to anyone. I believe that owe me money now because they have been withdrawing from my account for so long. I will be contacting the BBB and the attorney generals office regarding this matter.

I was recently also charged from Lady of America yesterday for an account that was canceled on Jan 3rd 2011. This was the first payment taken since 6 months and they told me my contract has been renewed. I was highly upset because my Lady of America contract was renewed without my consent. They said it renews on its own. I had to call a 1800 number and wait on the phone to argue with a female who could not answer any of my questions. She kept repeating over and over the same answers. I got upset and called again to speak to another representative who seem to cover the story as well. She stated i could cancel on the phone and i did. But still this money that was taken from my account will never be refunded. As of right now they state my account for the gym is cancelled and i hope they keep their word of not taking no more money from my account that has been cancelled since January and for a gym that has been closed for morre than 3 months in my town. They are raping money from people and think they can get away with it .

When I went to sign up for the membership, the woman told me there were two options:
1) pay an enrollment fee and pay $19/mo for a year or
2) pay no enrollment fee, but pay $34/mo on a monthly basis. She told me you could cancel anytime but probably would be charged an extra month.
I chose the second option because I was only going to be renting my apartment for 9 months. After a few visits I really didn't like the gym- it was dirty, had no water fountain, and the building definitely wasn't up to code (weird steps everyone tripped over, etc) I decided to quit. When I went to the gym they told me I couldn't quit there and i would have to call the main headquarters. When I did that they told me I had a 36-mo contract. I said no I did not. They said look at your contract. Apparently I did. The lady blatantly lied to me. And I will not stand for that. I will sue this scamming piece of garbage gym before they get that money.

Lady Of America Beware of this fitness center!

I belonged to the Lady of America in Deerfield Beach, Fl. My contract with them was for three years with very little room for backing out. I married in June of 2007 and moved to Franklin, Tn while our new home in Athens, Al was being built.

We closed and moved into our new home the 21st of August and I stopped the automatic payment from my checking acct at that time and sent proof of my new residence via a copy of our deed and my marriage certificate showing the name change. Please note that there is no LOA anywhere near Athens, Al. If there was I would gladly have gone as I enjoyed my experience at the gym.

They declined my submissions as proof and said they needed closing papers so I sent them. Again declined cause they were not signed copies. Contacted the Title company and had signed copies sent. Again, declined as proof of my residence as I am not on the mortgage loan. I am not on by choice, however I am on the deed and all other legal documents.

Okay, I send them our Homestead Tax Exemption papers which has both our names on it, shows the address and date of closing and can be obtained ONLY if it is your primary residence... again... declined as proof. Finally I send my license but since I did not obtain it till Nov, they want to charge me the extra three months, plus collection fees, plus late fees, etc.

It has been a nightmare dealing with these people. All I owe them is 20% of the remaining months which is under $130 but they are trying to really take me to the cleaners. I am so sorry to have ever hooked up with this company.

I have since checked the Better Business Bureau and they have a D rating. Not good folks. Beware.

I totally agree with you. What did you do to close your contract with them?

Lady Of America Do not sign any contract without reading it first!

I wanted to share my experience so that others may be careful about signing any contracts.

I received a card in the mail last June (2006) about a new club that would be opening in my area. The card read, "Join for as low as 14.95 per month". I called, made my appointment and went in to find out what they had to offer.

The 14.95 option was for a higher registration fee (299) and one could only go three days a week. I opted for the "middle option" which was 29.99 per month with 149 down. Nothing was mentioned about the length of the membership. The recruiter was trying to rush me out because she had other appointments waiting for her. She told me that I could "read it at home" later. Well, when I got home and read it, I found out that I had just committed myself to a 36-month term!

My company moved locations a few months later... making the distance to the club at least a one hour drive to get there. In January, the club called me to come in and get measured (this is done to track your progress). I mentioned that I was having a great deal of difficulty getting there after work and that I was interested in changing my membership to the 14.95 one. I was told to call ABC Financial, which is the collection agency that Lady of America uses. I called and found that the gentleman on the other line was rude and told me that LOA should have NOT given me this number. He mentioned that the only way that I could cancel was to move 25 miles away from the nearest club.

Last Thursday (April 4), LOA asked me if I had any problems (since I had not been back). I mentioned that it took me an hour to get there after work. They told me to call ABC Financial. I just got off the phone with "Meagan" and she told me that I would either have to 1) Move or 2) be declared disabled by my doctor and having the doctor write a letter stating that fact. Both of those would be lies.

I cannot continue to pay for a membership that I cannot use. I cannot afford to join another club. I cannot afford to purchase additional exercise equipment until this issue can be resolved.

I just filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. They have three complaints against the facility. Mine will make it four.

Do not sign any contract without reading it first!

I hope that someone will learn from my mistake. Thank you for listening.

Sorry I had to add one more comment. It seems to me that you might want to talk to your company about refunding you some of your money since it is because of their move that you can't attend the gym. It is of no fault of LOA. A contract is a contract. Filing with the Better Business Burea because your company moved their location isn't LOA's fault. There would be no point in contracts if everyone was allowed to cancel them. Your only complaint is that you signed without reading a contract. How can you blame LOA for that? Right now the housing market is in disarray because people signed contracts that they couldn't afford. Should we let them out of their finacial responsibility because of that? You do realize that you DO NOT have to pay that contract. It will damage your credit but they can't make you pay it. It's your choice. I did it once with an AT&T cell phone contract. If it's under a certain amount I believe it comes off in 5 years. I feel for you but at the same time I don't believe you have a case and I don't think that filing with the BBB is going to hurt them one bit because it is obvious that it's your own fault that you are in this situation. Sorry but I think most people have done the same thing sometime in their life. I can say that I have. I'm just trying to be honest. If this is the worst thing that ever happens to you, you are a lucky girl. :)

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with LOA. I love it and haven't regreted signing my contract. I plan on renewing when it runs out. It is unfortunate that you weren't told about the length of the contract because it was the first thing they told me. I'm guessing that you work an hour away. I drive an hour round trip 5 days a week to get to the gym. Instead of being upset use it as a motivator to get you to the gym. I would drive an hour one way to keep myself inshape if thats what I had to do. You might want to check to see if you can transfer the membership to someone that lives closer. It's worth a try.
I'm guessing you are relatively young and just haven't had enough experience with contracts. Hopefully you have learned a life lesson. Always ask the length of the contract and multiply your monthly payments X the length of the contract plus any down payments and extra fees so that you know the exact cost of your term. Good luck

I had similar problems with the Rockwall Lady of America. Not only are the staff completely unknowledgeable about their services they are too self-absorbed in thier own appearance and personal phone calls to be of any help at all.

Also ABC Financial is a TOTAL joke. Not only are they very rude but they had my account so messed up they were sending me 2 different bills for the same contract and then tried to make it my fault. They NEVER got their own mess straightened and finally gave up and turned the entire account mess back over directly to LOA control. I have stopped going completely and stopped paying and never intend to return. My supposed contract is up in November and I will NOT renew.

All i can say is that this kind of "club" is nothing but a frickin joke, you can only cancel if you move or you are disabled? give me a break, it sounds like a bunch of ###s that tried to open this chain and actually run it, come to find out they are to idiotic to do so!
