I have been a long time customer of direct auto insurance and i was resently involved in a mass flood storm in houston texas we had water as high as 10 to 12 inches for several days cars were stalled all over the place plus drowings of children and thier families inside their vehicles. It was awful i was also one of the victims of my car being damaged thur high waters trying to make it home from work. My car had to be towed from one car repair place and then i had to get it towed to the delear ship both buisness confirmed that the car throddle body had water damage and my insurance company only wanted to pay for just my nicks and dings to the car and not the engine of which my car wouldnt start because they claim the car had no evidence of water damage of which it took a week just to get a adjuster over to look at it by then im sure the water had dried up and even the dealership said there was wter evidence all on top of the engine, i dont understand i have never had a claim with them i pay my insurance on time and this is how they want to treat loyal customers i dont think so, i have all my documents and calls registered and i am seking a lawyer with this matter just wanted for the public to be aware, of how insurance companies can screw u.

This place is a scam. I'm still fighting with them just to get a copy of my policy after 8 months. The owner should be put in jail. I have no idea how they are getting away this!

On November 6 my boyfriend and I were involved in an accident. The man cut us off and braked thinking he was going to get some money to pay off another person he hit going the wrong way on a one way. Florida is a no fault state everyone's insurance goes up no problem. We call and file the claim and nobody wants to do their job. We kept being out on hold And not only that they claim they lost our payment. This is not the first time and we are constantly paying over the amount to get this situation taken care of. However, we were not letting it slide this time we are tired of being scammed. For a month they have been telling us they lost it and we have been saying run the cameras we were there. They waited until it was to late to run the cameras so they could say we don't have footage. I have had enough I'm to the point were I am ready to sue. We have been calling and going in the branch everyday, I don't even know how to get this started but I can't take it anymore please help.

I have dealt with Direct since 2010 and every issue or accident concerning payoff from Direct for rental or damages I have had and continue to have a problem. Presently I am attempting to be paid on a claim filed for a broken windshield which requires no deductible because I have comp. and collision. However I have sent everything asked of me to claims and so has the company that replaced the glass the adjuster continue to want more proof and complain about the receipt she asked me to send. How do I get paid for the out of pocket expenses once again I am being denied ?

I have actually worked for this company. They treat it as a retail establishment. Unfortunately, that means many of their sales agents do not have insurance experience. Their training is a joke and ALL the trainers do not have insurance experience either. The upper management is even more interesting, most have retail experience. They definitely do not understand the insurance industry, and ultimately, this has a major impact on conveying policy changes and explanations. For example, Direct recently released an individual life policy maximum coverage on 1 policy is $25k (Significantly overpriced premiums). One of the upper managers promoted selling 4 individual life policies to 1 person. Now, this may not seem like a big deal; however, when you get 3 cancellation letters in the mail because company guidelines state that any one person can only be insured for $25k...you may think the company does not know what they are doing. Furthermore, when it comes to claims, I personally had to threaten the claim's department for the same company I worked for, that I would get the insurance commissioner's office involved due to a denial of 2 separate claims. As an agent with extensive insurance experience in all lines, it was embarrassing to have to interpret the policy for a claim representative. Finally, the kicker, if you have Comprehensive and Collision (Dealership term: Full Coverage), don't think about renting a car without purchasing Comp/Coll from the rental company, because Direct's coverages DO NOT extend to the rental car. On a company standpoint, they cross their fingers that a policy lapses for more than 30 days because they get a FREE $65.00 every single time the policy is re-written. Do the math, 1k policies per day in the company...$65k in agency/application fees. I will have to say, the business model is perfect; always in favor of the company. Insurance is never an exciting expense in your budget, because you never know how great the company is until you file a claim. My advice, pay a little more and stick with an A-Rated company rated by AMBEST and DEMOTECH, it will never steer you wrong when it comes to the unexpected. I am a firm believer in questioning actions in an insurance company, that is the only way they will evolve. A company who actually cares will evolve from criticism, this company absolutely despises criticism...they just push it under the rug like it's that bill that won't go away and pretend it doesn't exist. Keep your eyes open for a class action because it will happen in the future. Every company has had one and it usually straightens up their act quickly.

So I started a policy with direct insurance company I did the policy on line and paid for it on line when I got my bank statement it stated that direct drafted 500.00 form my account I opted to pay up 6 mts in advance which was only 460.00 . A few days later I received a letter for the DMV saying my privileges were suspended due to lack of coverage . I was irate now not only did they draft 500.00 form my account they also say I have no insurance coverage which led to suspension of my privileges to drive and posse a tag . I call direct right away and told them that they had drafted the 500.00 form my account and then sent a letter to the DMV stating there was no coverage, Of course I got the run around however I remained calm .I complied with all their demand for documentation from my back to which I had to pay out of pocket for and had to pay to fax this legal statement along with a copy of my online statement as well as a copy of the letter that was sent to me I was told oh this is all we will need to straighten out this mess I ask that it be fix by the close of business on 5/23/14
Around about 6:00 pm I receive a call telling me the legal statement form my personal back that I paid out of pocket for and paid to fax to direct was not good enough they want me to go to my bank have the write a letter saying that the money was in fact taken I will just have to say I lost it told then kiss my ### I gave you all you ask for and told them don't you dare tell me a legal binding document was not good enough the lady then said I am so sorry I will get this fixed Tuesday . We really don't need this after all .I was belligerently pissed by this time its memorial day weekend I am now going to be stuck home due to this crap ### insurance company who screwed up and miss place money or applied it to another account . I 100% agree this is by far the worst company in the entire world and will be Shown on my local news station for stealing money form me ...

This is the worst company ever! I had full coverage insurance, I let someone use my car to move furniture, the car was totaled due to the weather. This insurance company took forever to even answer my calls, it was constant phone tag. They denied the claim, saying I there was undisclosed information. Not true. Now I'm left with making car payments with no car. This should be illegal. It's ridiculous that we have to have auto insurance, when they never want to pay. It seems to me it is just another illegal racket!

This company is a nightmare. I have been dealing with them for over 60 days. If you are reading this and have this insurance, cancel immediately and find another insurance company. If you don't believe me, call them up. Pretend to make a claim, that is if you can even get anyone to call you back. I will not give up on my claim, and I am absolutely postive they are will do anything to wiggle out af paying 1 cent to anyone!

I was a loyal customer for about 8 years. At the end of the year for 3 months when my wife went online to pay it said, "NO PAYMENT NEEDED" AFTER 3 MONTHS OF THIS I WENT IN AND FOUND OUT I HAD NO INSURANCE FOR LAST MONTH. THEY SENT NO NOTICE IN MAIL NOR DID THEY CALL. THEY SAID IF I PAYED MORE THAN DOUBLE DOWN PAYMENT AND AGREED TO A YEARLY PAYMENT OF $200 EXTRA THEY WOULD REASIGN ME. I WENT TO PROGRESSIVE.
THESE PEOPLE SUCK BIG TIME. A GIRL REAR ENDED MRE WHILE I WAS STOPPED ONE TIME AND HER INSURANCE INFO WAS BOGUS. THEY MADE ONE PAYMENT TO HOSPITAL AND THEN SAID I WAS NOT COVERED. A LIE. I AM GOING TO SUE THEM FOR THIS.I AM MAKING SIGNS TO NAIL HIGH UP ON TELEPHONE POLES. DIRECT GENERAL IS A RIP-OFF

In 2010, my son was killed in a MVI. The police checked for valid insurance and was told it was current. Upon my call, they stalled and then called me back saying the insurance was cancelled. I have a letter stating that his insurance was in effect from 3/31/09 through 04/01/10. They were unable to pay since the accident occurred on 3/27/10 and his death occurred on 3/28/10. The company is horrible and staff rude. You are throwing your money away, they will not support the consumer. They should be closed down for fraud. Alice Conolly

WORST INSURANCE EVER! And not as cheap as everyone thinks.
Jan 9. 2013, I warmed up my 2012 charger, went in to get my lunch came out, n somebody drove off with car w/o keys. Cops found the car stripped by 10am and they used a flat bed to drag the car to their import plot. The car sat on the floor/ no tires n it rained for 4 days straight. Called direct claim rep Manuel, nice dude but full of Sh**, told us to drop off the keys to the car at a savage lot, they dragged the car some more to that lot, it rained some more; eventually one of the keys got missing at dat lot. Adjuster Mike didn't see the car until a week after the incident. He told us he wasnt totaling it out cause it was a 2012 n everthing damaged would be repaired. HE LIED. We told him we wanted the car at the dodge dealership for mechanical repair, n then to a body shop. he seems to oppose that idea. He wanted us to take it to a body shop of his choice. Then he wrote out an estimate missing visible damages in front his face. We told him the undercarriage of the car is toast cause of the dragging n the rain, tire rods rusted, exhauste hanging, suspension etc. He said he would write more once the car is lifted. We insisted parts be brand new cause the car had 9000. He agree but stupidly ordered after market tires n rims cause (they were cheap according to him) for the car that wasn't the right size.
Car at dealership week 21/2, got tires put on, called out adjuster to adjuster some more, n he wanted the undercarriage of the pressure washed PAUSE LOL WHAT. He said he wouldn't see with all the mud underneath the car, meanwhile we could see all the damages. At this point the dealership was sick of Mike and wanted the car out their property, they had to call Mike for each repairs n had to wait on him to show and approve it. Week 3 dealership refuses to release the car cause they havent receive the check for tires n factory rims. Week 4 my husband finally got the check n drove it himself to the body shop. Same treatment at the body shop Mike had to come out and approve all repairs. Oh the undercarriage never got pressure wash but he wrote out estimate for some parts of the undercarriage. Week 61/2 Autobody called us the car is ready, my hus and manager drove the car and could hear water in the car and inside of the car flirty. Mike put the back bumper inside the car with mud all over it, I believe he wanted to reuse the same bumper. Car went back to dealership for one more week, autobody got the car did shaggy detail, called us to get car. Week 71/2 we got the car, body work good but undercarriage bad, the exhauste pipe was lose, the car don't ride right and we are pretty much struck with it. Keep in mind the car was only 6 month old. Week 10 we switched to Allstate. Direct only gave me 300 on a renter car but delayed the repairs on my car for almost 8 weeks. HORRIBLE INSURANCE WITH POOR CUSTOMERS SKILL.

All I have to say is direct insurance is bull crap. Someone vandalizes my car and mess up my motor and fuel system. Who ever did it put sugar in my motor and gas tank. I called direct and they sent a lady to look at my car. I asked her to call me 30 mins before she came so someone would be there. So she calls saying shes outside and has already inspected my car. Comes to find out she went under the hood of my car and checked all my fluids and stuff. then she tells me she thinks it mechinical failure and not vandalism. Im so ###ing pissed it makes no since. Then the adjuster is saying well we will review everything and call you back. Then he said If it was a auto accident id be denying you coverage bc your not on the policy. Its my moms policy and legally her car but i drive it. Comes to find out they cover the driver and not the car so basically if you let a friend drive your car and they total it your not covered bc only you and people on your policy can drive your car. This is the worst company by far. Im going to liberty mutual

They really do SucCk! I have been with the company for years and just had my first attempt of filing a claim, the service has been awful. Customer service are not helpful the hold times for climbs are unbelievable and there hours of operation are a joke. They haven't made this of any convince for me not to mention they are trying not for the damages. My car has been operable for a month know which my main reason for getting full coverage is to percent down time because of an accidents expenses. I am very disappointed in there service:(

Direct insurance is a huge scam! I was rear ended by someone and supposedly they have a valid policy with Direct. My accident was a little over 3 weeks ago and nothing has been done. Someone came out to look at my car and they said they would get an estimate to me but that has never happened. I have called the claim adjuster at Direct several times and they keep jerking me around and feeding me the same line of crap every time I speak to anyone there. I should NOT have to file a claim with my insurance and dish out money for my deductible. The accident was not my fault. Direct says they are waiting for the police report. My report is in the system with the police. A friend of mine is an officer and they checked into it to make sure the report was filed. Direct told me that maybe I should get the report for them. That is not my job, that is something they should take care of.
I am sick and tired of them giving me the run around. I am not sure how this company can be allowed to do business. They are deceptive and thieves!

I was recently rear ended by a direct ins customer. The kid has yet to report the accident to direct and they keep telling me that untill he reporst it nothing can be done. I have faxed the police report and the adjuster keeps telling me that doesn't matter. He needs to speak to his customer first. The way I see it if he has left several messages for the insured and he doesn't respond that should have sounded alarms. He also said that the insured does not have a time limit in which to report the accident. My father was a policeman I know better than that. It was just a bump-up however, I am thinking of hiring a lawyer to hadle this jerk they call an adjuster!

I used to work for Direct and I can commiserate. Even as an employee in one of their field offices, I could never get a claims agent to call me back on behalf of an insured. I am so glad to be gone from Direct. I NEVER recommended them to friends or family. One day they are gonna get sanctioned for their questionable activities. I just wanted to tell you that you do not have to remain with Direct until this is resolved. If you turn your tags in on your vehicle, you do not have to keep it insured. If you still have a vehicle on your policy other than the totaled vehicle, you can change companies now. You are not under any kind of contract that says you have to stay because of an open claim. You were insured on the day of the accident and that is enough. I am personally insured with Geico and I have had no problems. Good Luck with your search and resolving this mess.

I wish I would have done my research before getting Direct. I pay $100 a month and NEVER miss a payment. I have never gotten any type of ticket and never been in an accident until 2 months ago. I ran my car underneath the trailer of an 18 wheeler. Direct sent an appraiser out who did not help me at all. The adjuster sent me a check and a list of parts the car needed. Nobody ever answers their phone and never returns my calls. I took my car to a very well known and trusted body shop. They had been fighting with Direct because they were told that my car could only have used parts. My windsheild was busted and its nearly impossible to pull a windshield out of another car without cracking it. Finally, It was decided that my car had been totaled. When I talked to the appraiser he told me that he totaled the car on first sight and I was never supposed to recieve the check I recieved. Since then I have not spoken to anyone. I have called almost everyday for the past 3 weeks. I threatened to contact the insurance comission (which I have done now) and they are still not willing to help me. The check they wrote me isn't even enough to pay my car off. I have been without a car for 2 months and I still have to pay insurance and a car payment. I will always give HONEST reviews about Direct. If you are researching for new insurance, DO NOT GO TO DIRECT! As soon as this clears up, I WILL be switching companies.

I was a Direct Customer. I was in an Accident in Feb. 2009. My Adjuster was a goof and jack off. He never understood or never wanted to anything about the accident and just told me that the Litigation Department was handling it. That there would be no issue with getting my Property and Bodily Injury paid for. TWO YEARS later and some months...(and I have spoke to him Multiple almost stalking times since the accident) still nothing. I had spoke to the other Insurance Company too...OMNI in Atlanta the other person's car insurance. They to are worthless. I finally filed an Arbitration and Lawsuit against the other driver and now Direct wants to get in on the action...I told them no way ! I will handle this myself as I have been doing anyway. I no longer have insurance with them and have a Company with a GREAT reputation. And it is cheaper plus I do get rental, road side assistance, and can pay per month for only a dollar ! How stupid was I to go with direct when I did? LIVE AND LEARN !
AND YES, DIRECT IS A SCAM AND JOKE !

I have the general since 8/1/2010 to present my car was recently involved in a accident and my sister was cited for the accident. The general said they were going to deny my claim due to no one is allowed to drive my car that i signed some restricted policy which to my knowledge i did not, then come to find out that I don't have any tow medical or my custom equipment on my policy that I requested to have, which all this time I thought I was paying for so i'm trying to figure out what am i'm paying them almost $200 a month for. they are the biggest scam I ever dealt with if you have them leave, I would not recommend them to anyone at all they are the worst. I thought that they should be able to pull up any past quotes that you may requested and purchased but they saying that they can not they are so full of crap and i'm so pissed I will be filing a lawsuit against them no matter what the outcome just to let people know how they treat you even after they get your money... DO NOT USE THEM THEY ARE A SCAM!

I have just purchased The General Auto Insurance last month 2/1/11. I was due to have my automatic payment taken out of my account on 3/5/11 and it is now 3/8/11 and no payment has been taken out of my account. I go to check my invoice online and it says *Payment due 3/5/11 DO NOT Send Payment at this time, it will be deducted from your checking account or credit card* Right above my invoice on the documents page is a line that says "Notice of Termination", and the killer part is there is no Adobe Acrobat Symbol next to it for me to read the letter, and I opted for the "GO Green" option so no letter is even going to get sent to me. I will be contacting this customer service department later today and as far as I can tell it isn't going to go well. This customer is switching to All State! USAA! Is a great company as well! I don't know why I ever left them to go to this crap company thinking I would save money! ERRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I am a former employee of Direct in Virginia and I can agree with all the posts about Direct not caring about their customers. As employees, we are pushed at getting the total sale which includes products that most customers do not need nor want. I used to feel guilt when a customer would leave with a new policy because I knew if they had a claim, it would be a hassle getting paid. I am sorry for what everyone here had to deal with. My suggestion is find a reputable company.

Yes, I was hit by a direct general customer, my experience;;;Ditto=stalling; Ditto=we are waiting for a police report; Ditto=we must examine the facts; Ditto=we will pay; Ditto=the check is coming; Ditto=you didn't get the check yet?

So far its cost me $12, 300 and I was the one hit on May 25, 2010 in Orlando, Florida. I believe this is criminal, they take in money and pay out no claims. I believe all agents are trained to avoid payment at all costs. Well I won't go quietly.

If you reading this, you too about to be ripped-off by Direct General.

Hi Suzanne,
Do you know how anyone on this page can get in on that class action lawsuit that you read about in Florida, and are you going to get in on it since it has happened to you, also...not to mention, myself, as well. Please respond and give us all some insight of how to nip this in the bud. In the long run it will be well worth it.

Everyone not happy with Direct Insurance should post a brief message on any social networks you are on such as facebook, myspace, twitter etc. Let people know if you are dissatisfied. I read today that someone out of Florida has filed a class action lawsuit because of Direct slipping in other products in their insurance policy without discussing it with the policy holders. Get the word out. Buyer beware before you sign.

BUYERS BEWARE! DIRECT GENERAL WILL ADD PRODUCTS YOU HAVE NOT ASK FOR AND WILL BILL YOU FOR THEM. THIS IS INSURANCE DECEPTION IN THE WORST KIND OF WAY. MY HUSBAND WENT IN TO GET LIABILITY AND UNINSURED MOTORIST ONLY AND IN A FEW DAYS WE GOT OUT POLICY WITH LIFE INSURANCE, (THEY DID NOT OFFER IT, AND THEY FILLED IN THE QUESTIONAIRRE REGARDING HEALTH ISSUES AND THE BENEFICIARY) HOWEVER WE PAY THE PREMIUM. WHEN WE CALLED THEM ON THIS THEY REFUSED TO REFUND OUR PREMIUMS ON THE PRODUCTS WE DID NOT ASK FOR NOR DID THEY OFFER BUT ILLEGALLY ADDED ON TO UP THE PRICE OF THE PREMIUM. LOOK CLOSELY AT YOUR POLICY YOU MAY BE PAYING FOR MORE THAN YOU ASK FOR. INTENT TO CONTACT TO INSURANCE BOARD ON THIS MATTER. ONE UNSATISFIED PAST CUSTOMER!

I think that everyone on this blog needs to get together and contact the Insurance Commissioner regarding how this company is a ripoff. It has ripped off millions of dollars from a whole lot of poor innocent people, and they need to be shut down. Enough is enough! We have to let it be known to others, never to spend your money with this fake company, because in their time of need, Direct General will always find a way to never honor your claim.

I had an accident while driving a vehicle with full coverage insurance through Direct General. They declared my vehicle a total loss before even viewing my damage. Then it took them 3 weeks to complete their estimate and cost value of my truck. I had to get a rental car on my own and was told that my policy did not have rental coverage. I thought that odd, since I ask for rental coverage and was told I had rental coverage by my agent. Then as they checked further into my policy, they found that I have rental reimbursement through a third party agency. I was not made aware of this. This is underhanded, undercutting of my auto insurance, without my authorization. I would have never agreed to this. So, not only do they not provide the rental car coverage, but what they do provide is a reimbursement policy. I have to pay for the car upfront. Then they only pay for 10 days. They finally got me my repair estimate 22 days after my accident. So I have had to pay for an additional 12 days simply because they would not follow up with the adjuster to get my information. I had to make repeated phone calls to the claims office, my agents office and the actual adjusters office in order to get the report when I did. They refuse to reimburse me for the 12 extra days that was due to their negligence, because afterall, Direct General does not provide the rental coverage, that is a third party company. My other problem is that they claim my truck a "total loss" and are not offering the fair value of my truck. I've gone round and round with them. I did all the research and forwarded them dealer prices on comparable vehicles in my area. I'm from Kentucky, and they are using prices from Northern Ohio, Lower Michigan and somewhere near the Tennessee border on the Kentucky side. I don't understand why they don't use vehicles in my area. It's like they went out of their was to find lower cost vehicles to make up the cost value on my truck.

I now realize that I should have done much more research into this company before choosing them for cost efficencey. I will never make that mistake again. I will be switching insurance as soon as this mess is cleared up. I agree with the other complaints. Run, run far away from Direct General!

Customer service sucks. I have been trying to pay my account online for over 6 months now. I pay my daughters account just fine, but for some reason or another I can no longer pay mine. I called my local office, oh that is handled by a third party you have to call them. Did they give me a number, NO! I went to the website and tried to reregister, hum, now it will not take my password. So, I called the number on the website that was listed.

AFTER FOUR CALLS I FINALLY SPOKE TO A SUPERVISOR THE SAME REP WHOS NAME SOUNDS LIKE "SHENA" PUT ME ON HOLD TWICE FOR A TOTAL OF 18 MIN DEAD SILENCE. AFTER ALL THAT THEY STILL DID NOT RESOLVE MY ISSUE AND I HAD TO ASK THE SUPERVISOR TWICE TO REPORT IT.

I HAVE TO ADMIT THE THE HUFFS AND PUFFS I RECEIVED FROM SHENA WHEN I ASKED FOR HER NAME WERE QUITE AMUSING.

NEEDLESS TO SAY WE ARE SHOPPING FOR A BETTER INSURANCE COMPANY THAT KNOWS CUSTOMER SERICE.
