Investment Rip-Off
We visited San Pedro Belize and then moved there and trusted a hotel/condo owner (Milo Paz) and put $60, 000.00 USD cash in escrow for option to buy condo there. We returned to the US and after talking with our professionals here were advised to withdraw from the deal. The owner there was unwilling to discuss refund so we went to the BTB (Belize Tourism board) for help. Finally almost a year later we reached a settlement agreement with seller (Milo Paz). Now after a 10% down payment we have found nothing but empty promises and it seems no one there can help, the seller even ignores the BTB and his own lawyers. DON'T go to Belize Please! There are lots of other places like Mexico's Quinta Roo, which at least has as very strong government to back it. email us at bux.[protected]@hotmail.com we are putting together a boycott campaign on Belize tourism until they can show they can protect visitors and investors. We have other horror stories after having lived there 6 months such as the murder of a Spanish traveler that was almost immediately covered up etc.

Various Real State offices in Belize, specially in San Pedro are run by Americans, they have free material informing foreigners of many RE scams and how to proceed when purchasing property in Belize, also websites with similar information are available. Lots are sold multiple times, condos are never built etc. I believe before you give any money to invest, a good local lawyer, with clean reputation should be hired. They have all connections and can see that you have a clean deal. Real Estate Scams are all over the world.
I 'm living here for only one year and is clear to me that Consumers Rights does not exist just yet. A simple malfunction celular phone purchased here in Caye Caulker is not refundable. I complete agree with you that Belize needs better protection for investors, local or visitors, but in a third world country too much caution is not enough.
