ridiculous policy for a change of address - rude and discrmininating customer service

I personally think the costco in garden grove, ca by far provides the worst customer service than any other costco around it. Let me tell you why. My husband and I needed to change our mailing address, so we both came yesterday to this garden grove, ca location. My husband is the cardholder on the account, and i'm listed as the dependent member. All we wanted to do was to change our mailing address so we can get the mailers. That was all what we were there for. How difficult could it be? We both had our california dls (Non-expired, I might add). What more do they need to change the address? Please don't tell me that they can't verify identity with dmv dls. All government agencies use those to verify ids and issue replacement documents. It's funny because we had easier time requesting a change of address for dmv, credit cards, banks, and other financial institutions than trying to change the mailing address here at garden grove costco. Why is that??? Interesting, you might ask?

Guess what? The associate that helped us told us that "they need proof of change of address from the cardholder". When they said "proof of address", what they really meant was, "the cardholder needs to show his/her dmv id/dl with the new address on it". Ok, so my husband, who is the cardholder, does not have his address changed yet on his dmv dl. It just happened that my dmv dl was recently renewed, so mine is already changed with the new address. Well, we asked the associate if there were other acceptable proofs of address change they would require from the cardholder. Well, they wanted us to go home to get them our utilities bills with the cardholder's name on it. Okay…. Well, i'm actually the one who's in charge of paying all the bills; so my husband, the cardholder, wouldn't have any of those bills in his name.

It shouldn't be that difficult to change a mailing address, should it? After all, my husband and i, both came in person with both of our dmv dl's. Can't costco verify our identities??? Is the burden on the customer to provide "proof of change of address" supposed to protect us, the customers, or costco against some type of consumer fraud? What kind of fraud would that be, for a super store that only accepts three types of payments: 1) cash, 2) atm, or 3) american express cc.

I remember when we applied for costco membership the first time, all we had to do was to show our ca id/dl, and we could allege any mailing address we want. Yet, when we requested a change of address, they demanded for “proof of change of address”??? Even dmv doesn't require "proof of change of address" in order to change address at dmv.

So we asked to see the manager, we were presented with a racist, discriminating, incompetent person who clearly showed a total lack of management skills with the named “angie”. To make matter worse, while I was standing there with my husband, there was this caucasian lady who just came to the other side of the customer service counter next to mine, who was totally rude and pushed me over more to the opposite side of the counter and said to me, “excuse me” in a very rude tone of voice. The reason she did that was because she wanted me to give her some more counter space because of her size she needed more space? (There's 1 counter, divided in half, each side serves 1 party/ customer) the funny thing was, when I said it back to her, “excuse you” with the same tone of voice that she just gave me, she got really mad and continued saying “excuse me” over and over and then threw term “american manner” on me like she had any. It actually cracked me up because what she just did, was a “great example of what american manner” supposed to be... Lol. She was the one who was rudely pushed me over and rudely screamed “excuse me”. But what bothered me wasn’t the fact that the caucasian customer was rude to another customer, it was the fact that, manager angie, whom I was waiting to talk to, came over, without even a hello first of all, started yelling at me for responding to the rude lady. What interesting was, manager angie failed ask that rude lady, not even one word about why she was fighting for the counter space, the fight which she intiated herself... Lmao. It seemed as if manager did not want to have any problem with the caucasians, so she felt it was safer to put the blame on the non-caucasians? Hmmm…. Some racial discrimination was in the work here...

To make the story short, the female manger, “angie”, proceeded to tell my husband and i, that costco’s policy is “the cardholder must show proof of change of address”. So, I requested to speak to “the highest store manager”. A moment later, a male manager, named “parker” came over, supposedly the “highest store manager”. He didn’t show any interest in solving the problem. He, too, again, emphasized that “costco accepts change of mailing address in two occasions: 1) when the card is needed to renewed, and 2) when you can provide proof of change of address.

The whole time, manager parker, did not initiate any solutions to the issue at hand. He intermittently listened to our story and failed to provide any suggestions to resolve the problem. I, personally repeatedly asked him if there were other options and suggested several solutions. Specifically, I asked manger parker if my husband and I could switch our roles around, meaning, i’d be the cardholder, and my husband can be my dependent member. I told him that my dmv dl is already having the new address on it. Twice, I asked this question to manager parker, and this manager totally ignored my question, like he didn't even want to liisten to what we had to say. It seemed he didn't have any intention to resolve the problem. All he wanted to do was to repeat the policy again, that he wanted the cardholder to provide proof of address for the change. He kept on repeating it like he was reading a bible. He didn’t care if we wanted to switch or that we wanted to attempt to resolve the issue. He, manager parker, had no intention to resolve anything, even as simple as processing a change of address or a switch in cardholder name.

Being left with no solution, we requested to cancel the membership and were refunded $50. When I requested to have the names of all the people that we were helped that day, manager parker was not cooperative at all and refused to give out any names. I personally had to request manager angie to put her hair/her scarf aside so we could see her name because her name tag was covered with that. Also, manager angie could not provide us her associate name, the associate that was helping us earlier befor we requested to see her. Manager angie said she did not know her associates’ name or their schedules nor did she know who was on duty and who wasn’t. Interesting eh? Being defensive? Refusal to cooperate??? Did they have something to hide? I have the right to ask for names of the one that served me, right? If they wear their name tags, and covered those with their hair, or their scarves, and were asked for their names, but the refused to provide them... What's wrong with this picture? Lol.

Also, when we pointed out the incidence earlier with the rude caucasian lady, manager parker got really scared and told us that we did not want anything to do with us and wanted us to leave * “his store”* once the refund was completed. We asked how we could file a complaint about what we experienced today and manager parker pointed to the door and told us to get the piece of paper "tell us what you think" at the box place outside the entrance. When we went out to get that, there was nothing in there. Comment box = empty forms. We headed back in and requested for the form, manager parker angrily grabbed a stack of form and headed out the door, dropped in the comment box and let us grab the from out from the box ourselves... Hmmm... He coud have handed us a form when we asked for it before because it was right behind him. Wow, what a great attitude for a manager!

I also asked if I wanted to switch around having me as the cardholder and husband as the dependent, they said they only need the cardholder to be present to do the switch. So the moral of the story is, costco at garden grove provide the worst and rudest service than any other costco from nearby areas, not only that it also has some racial discrimination issue it has to deal with.

Oh and what a day! All we wanted was to change our mailing address! It was that simple! But we ended up having to cancel the membership. Lol :)

    Some people are just pathetic. It's ok for them to be rude to other people, yet if they get to taste their own medicine, they'd scream "American manner", like the Caucasian lady above. The the one pushed me over and screamed "excuse me" rudely but she shouted also the one who screamed "American manner" lol. First of all, look up what "American manners" mean first before scream it. Second, make sure you possess the qualities you ask/expect from others before you ask for it.

    @Lauren Hill Hi, Lauren. It sounds to me like you were treated rudely regarding your change of address and that Costco did not follow its own policy. However, I must comment regarding your receipt comment. I've been to many Costcos all over the country and can vouch for the fact that each and every customer leaving Costco must present his/her receipt and it is always marked through. That's just Costco. (Not that it should matter, but I'm white.)

    I guess I created this account a long time ago, and back then I had to option to choose either the Display name or the Username to be shown. Somehow the system only recognizes my username and not my "display name". That's why the impersonator was able to use "Lauren Hill" as display name...That's what I think the issue is here...

    However, when the when the impersonator tried to copy the name "babychicka", he couldn't. Because that account I just created yesterday because I thought that I was hacked...but since it's a new account, the system recognizes this so it did not allow him to duplicate; therefore, he had to use "babychIIka"

    As you can see, I visited this forum back in 2009 just to post a complaint and left. I came back to post another complaint and left. Now I came back and for my 3rd complaint using the name display name since 2009.
    I did not encounter any impersonating issue or immature, disrespectful people like those that replied to my topic today. It also just happened that most of the replies come from newly created accounts in 12/2011. Some of you have no life and enjoy coming here for entertainment and insulting people that post serious complaints here. You should be real ashamed of yourselves.

    I have to agree. Lauren Hill is acting very childish. I have to agree with Tasha. For a supposed married woman(18+) to call people ###s is very immature. She basically attacked everyone who posted on here. However I would not be surprised if she replied back claiming she never called anyone names, that someone else used her account for the last two days and ever since she wrote the review she did not make any replies. It was her husband, child, friend cat who posted all those nasty messages calling people ###s.

    Tasha you are not better, using racial slurs. I admit she is playing the race card when there is no racism, some people do that to get their way, but for you to judge all blacks based on one black ladies immature behavior makes you just as immature as she is.

    Hi, do you seriously think that it's reasonable to show "proof of change of address" on your Driver License to everywhery, Credit cards companies, banks, charge cards, your benefits, your pension, your unemployment payment, etc and etc and etc everytime you request a change of address???
    How many people have to do that?????? That's very ridiculous.
    For people that change adddress all the time because they can't afford to stay at the same place, do you think that's reasonable? DMV ID/DL as proof of ID doesn't suffice?????
    I know people that have to move 20x a year and you don't need to change the address on your DL 20x a year,
    got it???
    Costco at Garden Grove think it's BETTER than financial institutions, and ALL OF US government agencies in the whole entire US.
    No wonder why the store in Garden Grove is doing horribly. In fact, the facility manager admitted this himself. That store provides the worst customer service than anywhere. Also, any store that tolerates discrimination won't last long. I can promise you that.

    Tasha is an immature unmonitored teenaged troll. However for you to call people ###s just shows your maturity level. This comment has nothing to do with your skin colour or race.

    Several people have already stated this. But I will state it again.

    1. An adult does not go around calling people ###s.(You are offended by the way you were treated, you felt like you were discriminated against.. However people who are mentally ###ed can't help it. They are born that way. I would not even expect this type of behavior from my ten year old triplets.(the name calling. By calling other posters ###s because they don't agree with you is immature. Just shows what kind of person you are.

    2. The whole "but she started it" thing is something that would be said by someone who is less than the age of ten. You are basically saying that because Tasha insulted you first it is okay for you to stoop to her level and insult her back. That is another behavior that is childish and immature.

    The people who are making comments to you are not being racist, and telling you you are acting immature because you are black. They are telling you this because of how you are acting and it does not matter if you are black or white you are acting no more mature than Tasha.

    Learn how to read Father of Triplets and learn how to check. You are another person that has no analythical skills whatsoever.

    I will state it again. I have NEVER called anyone a ###. I would not stoop to that level. All the posters on here are racist. I did not post make that post about all the racists burning in hell. I would not wish that on anyone. As a matter of fact I pray to God that they learn to respect me no matter what color I am. I never called Tasha a ###, nor did I make that post telling everyone to go to hell. That was posted by the imposter. The only posts that I made was this review and a few responses to defend my review. I thought all the imposter comments were removed but apparently some(ones where I called other posters ###s that was an imposter) were not removed. Check the date. Check the profile. If you click under my name you would see that I posted three reviews and if you clicked on my replies on both the top of the review you would see that it is the same person. If you click on the replies where I called other members a ###, such as the one above Tasha's post you would see that that was created by someone else. Someone who just created an account a week ago.

    I bet the real reason you do not believe me is because I am not white, which is a shame. I hope you are not teaching your children to discriminate. That is just disgusting.

    Oh by the way, I actually HAVE A LIFE, unlike the imposter!! I'm done with this topic. Most replies were generated by reacting from the imposter's remarks and therefore, considered "irrelevant" in my view.

    I'm not a regular visitor here like the imposter above. I didn't expect my topic to be so "popular" so thank you, the imposter, for starting the fight, posting all kinds of racist remarks and causing everyone to jump in to join with him. Hahahahahahahaha. I feel bad for some other topics that has no replies whatsover. :)

    I will be back to post another complaint where it occurs. Just so you know, I don't post complaint because I want people to agree with me. I only post because I want people to KNOW about it, whether it's helpful to them or not. What might be helpful to someone might NOT be helpful to some one else. Keep that in mind.

However there is a difference between self defense and acting like a child. When someone hits you, you defend yourself to protect yourself. When someone calls you names online you don't ignore them.

Like you said you get treated the way you act, and if your online behavior is the same in real life I can see that you were mistreated not because you are black but because you are rude.     Lauren Please, you are making black people look bad. I am black as well and though Tasha is racist I have to agree with one thing she said. Why are you attacking father of triplets when he did not call you any names when he was respectful towards you? He also has a point you should ignore these people, they are ignorant and do not know better. The only people who were using racial slurs to you were Tasha and Kevinrichards (Kevin) Do not go around bashing other posters because you are making us all look bad.

    As for the others especially Tasha, don't judge all blacks because of one person's childish immature behavior. Not all of us are like that and most of us were taught manners to respect people by our parents, Lauren apparently was not and if she was she obviously ignored her parents.

    I called the 800 number on my Costco card today and changed my address over the phone in two minutes. The guy was polite and efficient and we each had no idea what colors were involved in the transaction. They make their money on memberships. What possible incentive could they have for not wanting your new address?

    I ordered a blender on online. After waiting 2 weeks for it to be delivered, I check my order status to find out that the order has been cancelled. When I call the 1-800 number they tell me that the item was no longer in stock. Never did I receive an email to let me know. This is not great Customer service!!!

    I have been buying milk at Costco in RWC for close to 20 years. Somebody had this bad idea to change the packaging (new product appeared on June 25th 2016) . Instead of packaging the 2 one gallon containers in cardboard (environmentally friendly) they are now wrapped in plastic :(.
    In addition the openings are designed and placed so poorly that every time a family member pours some mile there is a small spill.

    Please... can you go back to the old packaging?

    Your cake is really good and I would suggest you sell slices to the general public. You already have a selection of products sold outside the store, but lack in dessert section. I would highly suggest you consider selling the cake. It is really yummy and millennial would love it. I recently tried the cake at a friend's birthday party and it was really delicious. This cake is much better than many of the others I have tried at other bakeries. I used to order cakes from Costco when I was younger for birthdays, religious holidays and graduations and each time was better than the last. I think that selling individuals slices would be a great idea for more of the public to try.

I am writing this in regards to a disgusting experience my wife has experienced at Costco, today 7/20/09 approximately 3:30 pm at the Garden Grove, CA branch by the membership service personnel Jena (also known as Diana according to temporary membership she assigned)

My pregnant wife walked up to the membership service to acquire a coupon book. When she was asked to show the membership card, she provided the membership card that had no picture on it because we are new members to Costco. This is when Jena started to cause trouble to my wife harassing her as if she were an identity thief trying to steal a coupon book from Costco when clearly all she wanted to do was to shop at Costco. Even when she provided identification card and current address (because her ID had been made in her old address) Jena still treated my pregnant wife in troublesome fashion showing her lots of harsh attitude and ignorance. Just one of the example is when my wife walked up to the service desk Jena pointed her finger at my wife and with her disgruntling loud voice told her co-workers not to do hand her a coupon book or believe her information. She even suspended our membership and wrote that my wife “refused” to provide any information.

My wife and I are members of Costco, and irregardless of the photos or the lack-there-of, we do not deserve to be treated like liars and thieves when we shop at Costco. My wife, especially do not deserve to be treated this way because she has been an Costco international member since 1996.

    I was being served terrible by the same supervisor twice at Costco Mountain View. The supervisor, a middle age, Mexican person with black eye brows and black short cut, works at Merchandise Pick Up sector. This afternoon. I purchased two digital cameras, and when I asked a cashier for separate receipts, the teller told me to talk to a supervisor. This supervisor looked very serious when I asked him how to get two separate receipts for each digital camera. The guy told me that because of the Costco system that does not allow to print multi-receipts, But if I were an Executive Member with an AMX card, I can get multi-receipts. This supervisor (I did not want to reveal his name) told me to go to return sector.This guy said, "Ask them (people who work at return sectioin) to give me a call, then I will let you go to the cashier and get your receipts." I returned two items, and because I am not an Executive Member. The second terrible experience occurred to me when I returned to Costco at Mountain View. Around 6:15pm, the door was closed. I asked a person who checks the receipt at the exit door if I could have a chance to enter. However, that terrible supervisor hurried to me, and said, "We're closed, OUT! " I replied, "I just wanted to pick up one item very quickly."It is fine that the Costco has its own policy, but this same supervisor's attitude was really horrible!!! "Out!! Have a good day!" says the supervisor.

    The Costco in Brandon, FL suffers from the same problem. We get different answers, saying they allow up to 3 separate receipts, and then the next time, they say, they allow 2. I've asked them to show me in fine print where it says Costco doesn't allow separate receipts but could not show me where. We're executive members - but feel like we're being treated like dirt. I hope other people complain. Some people just don't get it ---- there are financially responsible adults who like filing their receipts separately (groceries, electronics, baby stuff) and don't need the hassle. We do the same in Publix, Home Depot, you name it. -- Now if they upgrade their system to the point where it separates it automatically like they do in some retail stores, then no complaint. ... this is just too much hassle and a no brainer that Costco fails the customer service exam.
