My daughter purchased an Upper Deck Hockey 2020-21 Series two tin for her birthday. These cards were purchased at a local card shop who is a register UD distributor on July 27, 2026. The tin was factory sealed.
She opened the tin and quickly noticed that 5 out of the 8 packs had holes in the tops of the packages. Upon opening those packs, there was an obvious dent in multiple cards where the hole would be. She continued opening packs and managed to get her first rookie jersey insert however, there was crimping along one edge and a giant dent/scratch along the back middle of the card. She continued opening and found 2 cards had crimping along the top, another insert had pitting on the back and one card even had a line printed through the portrait. There were also 2 cards from Opeechee pack that were bowed. All of these issues depreciated what value the cards may have had.
I contacted UD customer service by the phone number on their website. The rep gave me a email address and told me to send photos of the damaged inserts along with my receipt and they will likely swap the cards out for something else. When I sent the email, photos and receipt, I was told they wouldn’t do anything because it’s a year to year, set to set replacement. I told them these have blatant manufacturing defects and asked if they could do anything for her as she bought these cards on good faith that they would be free of damage. They replied back with a flat “no”. I have sent emails directly to supposed marketing directors and received no reply. I have sent a message through BBB and no reply.
Upper Deck’s company mission statement claims they take pride in “providing fans and collectors with high-quality, innovative, authentic, and collectible products”. As a consumer, you would think that there would be more remorse for putting out damaged collectible goods, even if it was a fluke incident. Instead, they failed a 12 year old kid, excited about collecting cards, who now feels like she wasted her money on poor quality, damaged product.
Desired outcome: Refund the full cost of the tin (receipt will be provided) or provide a replacement product.
