I went into the Tom Thumb Grocery Store (bought out by SafeWay Grocery Stores) on Bryant-Irvin Avenue and was going to return for exchange 2 out-of-date packages of Swanson Chicken Broth that my wife and I had purchased the previous month, but we didn't have our receipt. I explained briefly to the clerk behind the counter about what had happened - we generally shred our store receipts after a few days, so anyway, the clerk was going to do it for me, but then she said something like - "This is not found in our Items List" and I was surprised, as it was apparently on it last month when the cashier scanned them and we paid for it.

So then some black Non-Grocery Floor Manager wanted to be a smart guy and started mumbling something about, Somebody decided to clean out their cabinets and wanted to return this old stuff. And, "We sold every single package of the Chicken Broth last month."

Wow. That's absolutely amazing, seeing no other grocery stores sold all their stock that quickly. Then he began muttering something under his breath as he continued to put some things into a basket - he was about 20 feet away from the Customer Service Counter where I was standing. So anyway, I looked straight at him and said, Thats a LIE! And to the clerk: Never mind - just KEEP it! And I left the out-of-date chicken broth on the counter, and began walking out of the store - the manager started to say something condescending like, Well go ahead and give you the re- - I held my hand up and said, very loudly, No, FORGET IT! You can keep the stuff! And left the store.

I will NEVER EVER go back to a Tom Thumb Grocery Store again. In my opinion, the Floor Non-Foods Supervisor was rude and basically called me a liar because he didn't want to refund a measly $5, - for 2 outdated items we purchased. That's about the SORRIEST 'customer service' you can give a once-loyal customer, so that's fine - we understand.

And that's all good - because we went to Albertson's Grocery Store just down the street and purchased the grocery items we WERE originally going to buy from the Tom Thumb Bryant-Irvin Avenue Store. We spent close to $200, - for the things we needed, and I can assure you that I will be filing a report on the online Customer Complaints websites..

Basically, the bottom line is - you have LOST a (formerly) loyal Tom Thumb customer.

“Saturday morning, I went to what for years I thought was my favorite Tom Thumb. Food is good. Bank is conveniently located there, BUT today I wanted to do something different. I wanted to wire some funds through Western Union. I guess not all customers are welcome here, even usual customers like me. Long story short, I approached the counter and asked how much it would be to transfer some funds. I wanted to go to the ATM and withdraw the right amount. Well, what happened next changed my mind about this store. A very racist, loud, and out of line employee yelled at me for no reason. When I asked her to calm down and tried to explain that all I wanted was to know how much cash to withdraw from the ATM prior to doing my transaction, this awful and condescending woman came closer and blurted information with major cynicism and hatefulness. A very offensive, scary and humiliating moment for sure. It was totally undeserved and unnecessary. I obviously walked away from the store and did my Western Union transaction and grocery shopping somewhere else. This hateful and racist individual happened to be training a much nicer employee who did witness how rude and awful that other employee was. Management should have a serious talk with that awful (white, middle-aged) individual who surely needs some training on how to treat customers professionally and respectfully regardless of the color or their skin and race. I am a school teacher. I asked nicely, and left that store almost in tears. There is no reason to treat customers like this. It's not good for the business. She should not be working there at all.”

The Tom Thumb in Southlake Texas on 1709 sells expired food, moldy, fuzzy fruits and veggies, spoiled meat, obviously damaged cans that are high risk for causing serious illness, and more. The manager has been notified on many occasions. He has a nice smile, but is obviously not equipped or interesting in managing a store. The organic fruits and veggies are often rotten, and I have repeated asked for certain items to be places where I can reach them. I am 5'2", and have to climb shelves and ask other patrons to help me to reach things on the top shelf. The dairy case if filthy, and there are young guys walking around in uniform doing nothing. It's really a shame. There was a time when Tom Thumb was a nice store. What happened? Are they trying to kill off the locals using food poisoning and apathy?

I am sorry the author of the comment above was insulted. I understand EXACTLY how he feels (for a similar reason I have not darkened the doors of Circuit City in 20 years). However, insulting behaivor from hired sheep-herds is not unique to Tom Thumb, nor any retailer. And certainly no reason to 'black-ball' the Brand(s).

I shop at 'my' local Tom Thumb for years, and have received much better than average customer service/customer focus.

I've come to the conclusion that it is best to contact "Corporate" concerning offensive personel. Believe me, "corporate" have ways to root out Bass-clowns.

Everybody has had a "bad-day". Those who let their slum character spill over into there professions life... of course, the need to be fired.

What is needed, and to be learned by folks who think they can get another job anywhere, is:

Is not the answer obvious.

Happy Tom Thumb Customer.
(PS. I have no connection with Tom Thumb" other than to shop their groceries).
