Since the exchange rate for Canada vs USD is 30% higher, on the Canadian side, paying in USD would actually be LESS for you. And since the default currency on the website is USD, I am confused at how you could not know this was an American company, and American companies charge American currency. I would not expect a website showing CDN currency to charge me USD. That is just stupid.
How can they get away with it? Simple. You purchased a non-refundable trip without adding trip insurance to it. I have flown to Mexico and Canada several times. I still have to have my passport every single time. Plus, when you book cruises and vacation packages, and when you book non-refundable ones, they tell you up front that you are booking a non-refuncable trip. That is why you pay for insurance. Even if the USD amount was $134, the CDN of $179 would be correct with the exchange. And just like my American credit card, yours converted the foreign currency on your bill. You paid the same amount. You just did not pay attention to the website when you placed the reservation.
