I am writing to formally appeal the denial of my application for public housing.
I have been living in a shelter at 385 McDonald ave unit 109 with my 12-year-old son since December 2023. Although I qualify for a two-bedroom apartment with my CityFHEPS voucher, my application was recently denied because NYCHA was unable to contact my previous landlord. This is an issue beyond my control, as the contact information was provided by my housing specialist.
My previous housing situation involved a landlord who failed to repair hazardous conditions, including leaks and infestations. Despite paying $4,899 to move in, I was eventually evicted after refusing to pay for an uninhabitable apartment. I provided the interviewer with the legal agreement from my court date as proof of these conditions. Furthermore, the "one-shot deal" mentioned in my records was not pursued because I could not agree to remain in a hazardous environment.
It is unjust that I am being denied a fresh start due to the negligence of a prior landlord and administrative difficulties in reaching them. I am aware of others in similar situations who have been placed in permanent housing, and I feel I am being unfairly discriminated against based on a history that resulted from predatory housing conditions.
I have evidence of the hazards in my previous apartment and am seeking a fair review of my case so that my son and I can move out of the shelter system.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response.
Best regards,
Miss Judd
