My account is now fully caught up and current. However, more than 35 missed/late payments are currently appearing on my credit report, and this has had a drastic negative impact on my credit score. My wife and I are currently in the process of trying to obtain a home loan, and this reporting is significantly affecting our ability to move forward.
What is especially concerning is that I had no knowledge that these payments were past due. I did not receive notices by mail or phone informing me that my account was delinquent or that payments were accumulating.
We recently spoke with both a supervisor and a manager at Nelnet regarding this situation. During those conversations, it was confirmed that correspondence had actually been returned to Nelnet as “Return to Sender.” Despite knowing that the mailed correspondence was not reaching me, I was not successfully contacted through another method to make me aware of the delinquency.
By the time I became aware of the situation, more than $1,000 in past-due payments had accumulated and extensive late-payment history had been reported to the credit bureaus.
Had I known there was an issue with my account, I would have addressed it immediately. As soon as we became aware of the balance, we took the necessary steps to bring the account current.
I understand the importance of making payments on time, and I am not trying to avoid responsibility for my student loan obligation. I am asking Nelnet to consider the fact that I was not receiving the delinquency notifications, Nelnet was aware that correspondence had been returned, and I corrected the account promptly once I became aware of the issue.
More than 35 late-payment marks resulting from this situation are having an enormous impact on my credit and my family’s ability to obtain a mortgage. I would greatly appreciate an expedited review of this matter and any assistance Nelnet can provide in removing or correcting this negative reporting.
Desired outcome: Remove the 35 late payments that I was not swear of. Nelnet did not use 3 forms of communication. I did not receive email or phone a phone call before reporting this to my credit.
