I took my father to the emergency room at 7 PM because of severe chest pain and pain in the jaw and neck. They took him right in and gave him a EKG and then sent him to the waiting room, They next came out 30 minutes later and took blood and then again sent him to waiting room. Then they came and gave him x-rays and again sent him back to the waiting room. Now I am aware that there is a priority for patients that are in bad shape but folks this night was not busy. At 1:30 AM they still would not give us any help or offer and assistance other than to say well there are people here with chest pains that have been waiting longer than you. This is unacceptable! The problem is that, THEY DON'T CARE! They have reason to care! A person could be in that waiting room for 18 hours and it would be no big deal. Do they have only 1 doctor seeing patients in this hospital? This is a extremely large hospital and you would think that you would be cared for in a timely manner. I honestly would not recommend this hospital for my dog! SEVEN HOURS ! You would think there was a outbreak of some sort and people were lining up but there was literally FIVE other patients in the waiting room.. Tampa General is supposed to be the number 1 rated hospital in the area. I would hate to see a lower rated one..

Please forgive my Grammar. When I was writing I was tired and frustrated.

So let me clarify some things so that the couple of jerks that commented can be clear.. We hadn't left yet when I was writing the complaint. We finally got the attention of a nurse that came out of one of the triage rooms and she went out of her way and took my father in her examination room and gave him the information and papers her needed. She didn't have to do that but she did and probably went against protocol to do it.. While we were back there we noticed not ONE bed had a patient in it. The nurse apologized and explained that they were using a new system that was not working very well. So to you three know-nothing wimps that replied, you can go to H--L.. And if that don't work then come see me at the Nissan store in Brandon . My name is John..

B'sneeze---- it is not a blatant lie! How could you say that is a lie without any knowledge of the situation. Im curious to know how it would benefit me by lying about a helpful nurse. If I could have taken a picture of the empty beds I would have. I did how ever take a picture of a empty waiting room and post it. I have better things to do than make up stories about a hospital. It was a bad experience ! Why are the people on here taking it so personally?

Again your assuming that everything was done they way it supposed to be. You act as if this kind of thing is not possible! So just to clear it up for the people on here, we got results back today from the cardiologist. He has a blockage and has to have a angioplasty and also one of his test revealed a thyroid issue that they are concerned with. Now if you think we are the only ones to have this kind of issue with TGH then you need to research a little and see the complaints and close calls that have come from there. So I'm done responding on this post because it seems like mostly idiots are responding, with the exception of Impudent1 . That person is the only one who responded with respect and without ridiculing me.. Thank you.

Also, I am here right now and all I have heard is a woman taking constantly about how she cannot do her job because her computer access isn't available. Really? Can you please help my daughter? We have been here for 4 hours and told nothing but wait!

Understandable. However, did you not choose this profession?

I am a TGH Emergency Room RN. I will tell you this. As a Trauma center AND a safety net hospital we see hundreds of people a day in the ER. Most are polite. Unfortunately, there are some who are not. I want to thank those who understand that when you are here at 130 in the morning waiting to be seen, we are in the back being yelled at, spit on, . urinated on, pooped on... Sorry if you had a bad experience. We have a bad experience every single day.

I wish to apologize to the people at Tampa General Hospital for my own selfish attempt to complain about people who try to dedicate their lives to helping other people. Mistakes are made, budgets are hard to meet, they have to sometimes deal with unforseen shortages of personnel. We are all responsible for cruelty to God, as he suffered and cried for compassion, while people watched Him cry out for compassion, at the same time that He forgave us all. And that was done intentionally… not by mistake or by shortages of available funds. We all to do this every day, when we fail to have compassion on people who suffer: we turn away, or change the channel. And yet when we go to the hospital ER, we assume the only emergency is our own. We don't ask ourselves how many hours or double shifts the nurse at the desk has had to serve. We don't even consider the fact that that nurse has dedicated his/herself to a life of serving people who are suffering. It's easy to find reason to complain when we don't get what we want, when we want it. But we have to ask ourselves: how can we make a difference? Tampa General, like any other hospital, tries to provide relief from suffering. And instead of pointing a finger of blame, I should be trying to help them to be able to provide help for their mission to provide that relief. God only asked for compassion as He suffered for us on the cross. He didn't demand immediate attention and release. He didn't condemn those who stood around mocking him and laughing while He suffered. Regardless of what anyone might think about Tampa General, or any other hospital's service, they try to do their best to alleviate suffering. My understanding of “faith” has changed. I can only beg for donations from you, my brothers and my sisters, to help Tampa General and other hospitals to relieve the suffering of others. On Tampa General’s website, there is a link to make donations to the Tampa General Foundation. If you can, please give what you can to help them in their mission. Thank you for reading and opening your hearts.

I have been going to this hospital for years on end. I sometimes wait not more then 3-4 hrs. or less. But this passed 12/6/11, I signed in at 9:30am and did not go back till 7:30pm, I had chest pain and flank pain so painful, it was hard to do anything I had taken my nitro spray 3 times before I was seen. Is that telling you something? Before this hospital was doing good, but know it is so damn ridiculious. The Rn's at the front desk are rude and some are not. I wish that the TOP HEADS could see how this place is runned. I do feel sorry for some people but not all are considered sick. Some just come to eat, drink and complain. Some say they been there for an hour and they want to see a doctor fast, and others like myself who wait 8-12 hrs to see a dr. What is wrong with this picture of people?

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience, but as a very seasoned ED nurse I feel I need to comment. First of all, TGH is a Level 1 Trauma Center. What you saw in the triage area where there probably were empty beds is just that- a triage area. Patients arent meant to stay there. They have EKG's and blood work- then they have to wait like everyone else. The rest of the ED is a different story- there is no way there were only five patients waiting and you didn't get a room. If you waited that long there was a very, very good reason for it, and trust me on this- I'm sure the powers that be at the hospital were well aware of exactly how long everyone was waiting and were doing everything they could to move patients and pull beds out of their yahoo's to get patients seen. What you probably didn't see were the ambulances pulling up or the helicopters landing on the pad with trauma patients and critical transfers from all over FL. If your father had a life threatening change on his EKG or in his blood work, he would have been taken to a room. Obviously, he didn't have those types of results. Yes, seven hours is a long and frustrating time- but I'm quite certain that you didn't see the trauma room or the other care areas of the ED. A long wait time doesn't mean that "no one cared." It means that the nurses and doctors were working their tails off and simply put- there wasn't a room available. If you had any medical knowledge you would know that an EKG won't show a blockage- it would show an immediate MI (heart attack) or other signs of ischemia (heart tissue dying.) If they don't have those signs then it is not life threatening and in a Level 1 trauma center you are LITERALLY dealing with dying patients every second...and they get priority. Dont mistake a long wait time for a legion of people "not caring." ED nurses have one of the hardest jobs on the planet. They do their job to take care of people because they love what they do, but it is a thankless, low paying job where you get yelled at, called names, threatened and cajoled every second of every day. And yet we still care. And we still show up, every day. The nurse that took you into the triage area I'm sure wasn't going against any protocol. He or she was trying to show that they DID care- and I can't believe any management system would ever punish them for that. I don't work at TGH, but I have worked in large health care systems before, and they are all the same. I'm sorry your father had a bad experience, but I'm glad that he got in to see his cardiologist- and I'm sure they scheduled him for a heart cath. Which I'm quite sure wasn't done that minute and was scheduled for sometime in the future...in a week or so...
