I lived in Chicopee Falls, Mass before moving to Nevada. This school has let me down big time. I graduated top of all of the classes that were in there at the time I went (from July 1999 to March 2000) when it was still called UDS - Ultrasound Diagnostic School. It then became Sanford Brown Institute.

Before I moved to Nevada I was told that the career services dept. of Sanford Brown could help me get a job no matter where I moved. That is NOT true.

The following is my exact situation and what happened to me...

I lived 27 years of my life taking care of 3 ill family members full time. When they died I was a 42 year old woman with no skills and no experience. I went and talked to Sanford Brown reps (then it was called Ultrasound Diagnostic School) and I told them I needed a promise that their school was NOT bogus because going there for Medical Assistant training would be my only chance at getting an education and job skills and that my life and future depended on the school's validity, accreditation and training skills. They told me countless times they had acceptable accreditation. They did not. Their accreditation is not recognized by the AMA (American Medical Association) or anyone else. I know because I checked.

I was told by the facilty of UDS that I could become a certified Medical Assistant. This is not true because the school does not have the correct accreditation. The accreditation they hold allows you to become ONLY a registered Medical Assistant. Being a registered Medical ssistant means absolutely NOTHING in the medical world.

I graduated from UDS (Ultrasound Diagnostic School - NOW called Sanford Brown University, in 2000. My grade point average was so much higher than 4.0 that they had to conform to educational standards and knowck my GPA down to the highest of 4.0 that is recognized. I graduated at the top of all classes that were there at the time. I gave the graduation speech. I graduated feeling somewhat "hopeful."

I found there were very few jobs in the Springfield, MA area for Medical Assistants unless you graduated from an actual college training program with an associates degree. So I moved here to Henderson, Nevada, where they were supposed to have a high demand for medical assistants. I have not been able to find work as a medical assistant here either!

The training that UDS aka Sanford Brown provided was useless. They always skipped over all of the procedures in the books that we should have been learning and told us we'd learn it all on the job-sites! That is NOT true! They expect you to already know these procedures when you get a job. When I was in school for those 7 months, there were welfare girls there solely so they could continue getting their welfare checks. They had no plans on learning a career. And if they failed, the welfare system paid them to repeat the courses as many times as it took. They disrupted the classes daily. We had several teachers abandon us and the school and quit during the middle of our courses. We were left without teachers and eventually had substitutes. We had instructors who spent the entire class time talking about their personal lives and love relationships. One in particular Miss Heather Ruggerio did this almost on a day to day basis. Then one day she up and left and never gave notice and left us with no teacher for at least a week and a half to two weeks until they got another teacher in to substitute! There was no consistency in anything in that school.

In 2004 I almost became homeless because of my inability to find work as a Medical Assistant. I am broke. I lost my car so I have no means to get around and look for work and here in Nevada they want you to have a car because the office personnel are tired of dealing with employees with transportation issues. On top of it all I had to file banckruptcy. I am financially broke, I am spiritually and mentally broke and my heart is broke because the teachers and school reps promised me they were on the up and up, they promised me written letters of reccomendation, and all I got was taken! I have lost my self-esteem, my confidence and my self-worth.

I NEED A LAWYER PRO BONO or one that will file a civil action. My life was destroyed by that school. After my family members died I only had enough money to go to school for one year so I told them my life literally depended on the validity of their school and training. They failed me and my life is in ruins.

And my mentor, Ms Terri (Ward) Wyman (whom I looked up to and trusted) failed me most of all because I brought all of my concerns about the school to her attention numerous times throughout the year telling her I was thinking about transferring to Porter and Chester (who had the correct accreditation) but she and Katherine Dearborn (the female dean at the time) would reel me right back in and convince me to stay telling me one time that 'because I was the the top student, that if I left the school, they were afraid everyone else would follow and leave too.'

All of my teachers, especially Mrs. Terri (Ward) Wyman, Mrs. Debbie Fish, Miss Carrie Mack and Miss Stephanie (Merrick) Bogosian told me they would give me letters of references since I asked and since I was moving so far away. I never got one single letter of reference. They lied. All of my resume references were the teachers at Sanford Brown on Cadwell Dr. in Springfield. But recently in late 2008 my sister, in Massachusetts, called me to tell me she drove by the school and that they had closed down. It's no wonder I wasn't getting any call backs for interviews..they were probably checking my references and finding they didn't exist! I have a list of hundreds of places here in Nevada where I applied for jobs. I can not get work and lost ALL of my references when they closed that school down! I'm at a loss as to what to do. My life has suffered greatly from what that school did to me...all of the lies, the deception.

That school was there for one purpose only - to make money from the federal student grants. The more students they dragged in - they better - FOR THEM! But me - I was taken by them, screwed over big time! They didn't care about you or me or any of the other students there. They cared about the money!

A lot of others who went there must be experiencing the same problems. I can't understand why no one else from, Ludlow, Springfield and Chicopee, Massachusetts have come forward.

So, it’s 2023 and this is a never ending TRAGEDY! I cried all day today over the phone to all kinds of educational depts that could not assist me with anything…I even looked up the lawsuit against UDS Sanford brown Eugene who ever the hell that is and found that they were sued. “Where the heck was I when this went down bcuz I was scammed too?” No credits no certifications no proof I existed at this school for an entire year! Just a graduate pic from 2000. If there are still ppl on here starting a civil suit or involved in it here’s my email nkspen41@gmail.com…

I am so serious! My whole life has been ruined 😡

I can’t attend any school to better my life. My credit is in HELL BcuZ of these frauds! To be told “pay it and move on by the DOE today was disheartening discouraging and felt like I was once again stomped on. I cried just cried while talking to every school official I could get over the phone. HESC was the worst offender. I did get a few “I’m so sorry you went thru this I wish but we can’t help yous”. This is disgusting. Again if anyone is involved in anything civil please PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CONTACT ME VIA EMAIL. Nkspen41@gmail.com…

My typos are the result of how distraught I have been. 2022 and this tragedy still haunts my life to the day. I’m discouraged so lost, all I wanted to do is make a better life for myself doing something I grew to love, and that’s taking care of others. Now I can’t get pass the level I’m on without more education. I’m denied a future bcuz of these con artists. UDS IN NYC ON IRVING PLACE WAS A SCAM! I’m in debt with no proof that I even attended this sham school. I do t exist. I’m a nobody accountable for monies that I can’t afford to pay back, which has me sinking with the credit borough. My whole life has been a struggle, not being able to level up and do better. 😢😢😢

I’m in the same situation. I attended the school in 1996 and it’s still on my credit. I’m trying to get it forgiven. The school was called ultrasound diagnostic school and it wasn’t accredited. Please if you have any info about the school or a class action suit email me at kmabd0825@yahoo.com. Thanks!

I graduated from the Springfield MA site in 1999 with a 4.0 GPA. Also couldn't find a job. Didn't even get my certificate from them since I owed them like $2000 after the federal loan. My credit is still in the toilet and until now I hadn't even heard about a lawsuit. We all definitely should've been included and at least have our loans forgiven. I need to figure out how to file for a loan forgiveness somehow.

Good Morning All,
I emailed the Editor of the Chronicle of Higher Education stating an almost exact Complaint like one that got settled Legally in July 2000, against the "OWNER" of UDS, now Sanford Brown, called Whitman Education Group - $7.3 Million. Below is MY Scenerio, and email to them on [protected]

Good morning,
I am a graduate of The Ultrasound Diagnostic School in Elmsford, NY. I attended this School from November 1990, until May 1992. The program was a one (1) year curriculum, the first nine (9) months were of evening Didactic Training in a classroom, and the last three (3) months, were fulltime days doing Clinical scanning on patients in an hospital or outpatient setting.
During the 9 months of classroom training, which turned into thirteen (13) months, due to Teachers leaving & under trained staff taking over, we began our clinical training in February 1992. Clinical was set for 3 months, however, some had to stay longer due to Teacher absence, which moved our Final Exam back until May 1992. We were All told we would be hired by the Clinical facilities to which we gave our "Free labor" to Monday to Friday. That NEVER happened, nor were we able to find employment because No one hired you without being A Registered Diagnostic Ultrasonographer, which was someone that had enough training hours, 2200 to be exact, to be able to sit for your Registry/Boards. And therefore the exam/Registry was Vital, that's what you went to school for, AND at This School because they Guaranteed your being hired. My student loan of $6300, for this education, was not able to be repaid at that time, so I took advantage of the 10 years of forbearance we were allowed. In those 10 years, I was not able to find employment in that field due to lack of being Registered in the field. My student loan had earned interest, and in 2000 it was taken over and consolidated by Sallie Mae, and the amountwas $10k and change. Fast forward to 2014, Sallie Mae became Navient. From the time of consolidation in 2000 until present, the amount of my payements is well over $20k paid, on a $6300 original loan.
In 2009, I had requested my school transcripts from The Ultrasound Diagnostic School and came to find out that they had CLOSED, and were NOW owned by Sanford and Brown, out of Florida. It took some time to get these because they had NO RECORD of me upon them acquiring the school. I was needing those records/credits so I could transfer them to another educational institution towards my degree - those credits, unfortunately, were NOT ACCEPTABLE to any educational institution. Upon receipt of my transcript, the dates were NOT correct either.
I was Completely Disgusted at this "Sham of a School.

In 2018, I was on the internet trying to Research anything on Schools that improperly conducted education with false hopes and the responsibility of the loan that had FAR EXCEEDED the amount currently showing. I contacted the Department of Education, and was able to fill out a Borrowers Defense application, to allow them to get the facts for us and see about obsolvecense of this loan, which again as I stated was paid almost 4 times over.
It has taken them until this past Tuesday, August 26th, 2020, to decline my application. They are not CLEAR as to why, but have NOT acknowledged The Ultrasound Diagnostic School in ANY part of it, they refer to Sanford and Brown, the school who bought it, remember, the one that could NOT find proper, or any, transcripts on me, and had incorrect dates.
I am reaching out to you, because I have been again, researching this Ultrasound Diagnostic School to find out if anyone else has undergone this same or similar situation - And then I saw your article on the Lawsuit. Could you possibly advise me on where I can turn to for help, I have NEVER found employment in the Field of Ultrasound, because my credentials are Null and void for both Registry Exam taking, and credits NOT credible, yet I have to CONTINUE to pay well over the School loan amount.
I look forward to hearing from anyone of you on how you are/were able to get this helped, and if anyone has fought legally - The Department of Education feels I do NOT qualify for a Loan discharge.
So ANYONE out there with ANYTHING regarding how to resolve this I welcome,
Thank
Jacqueline

Hello, my name is Nicole Spencer. I attended this sham school in 1999 and fake graduated in 2000. This school was located in NYC on Irving place in Manhattan. I’m reading everyone’s story and it’s the same as mine. I also was told by the DOE I didn’t qualify for loan discharge. One Person said to me “pay it and move on”! I haven’t been able to “pay it and move on”! I’m still to this day, at a lost on how so many of us can be scammed like this, and still held accountable for these loans. I have no credits no certification no proof I even attended this place. But I have debt over ten grand that says I did something somewhere? How is this even possible? I too am looking for help.

I also attended UDS on Caldwell Drive in Springfield, MA for Medical Assistant. I didn't know until after completion that the school was a scam and not accredited. I was a single Mom with a 2 year old at the time. After graduating with honors I realized that Baystate Medical Center, the largest Hospital in the Springfield Metropolitan area would not accept students from this school. I ended up getting an externship at Mercy Hospital on Carew Street in the Pre-Surgical Assessment Department. And only because I got to know the ladies in the department, and worked hard during my externship, did I end up getting hired by the same department after my externship was complete. Because it was certainly no thanks to UDS! Upon completion of my externship I thought I would be hired for clinical phlebotomy, and ECG Tech which is what I was trained for. But when I started the job for pay at $9.50 an hour I was told by the supervisors I could not do clinical and could only work as a unit secretary. I am convinced this was because of the school I attended. many students were going across the border into Connecticut because the pay was a little better and I was aware of many students who ended up going back to old jobs are finding regular jobs in factories etc etc because they would be paid more, and the people who are willing to hire us were few and far between. I have a question to ask all of you. I never cashed a student loan check sent to me from the government to attend school at UDS. I handed them over to the woman in the business office! Did you all do the same?because when trying to get student loan forgiveness years later I was told that I cashed and spent the money or handed the money over to the school so I am responsible for the loan! There is no way they can prove that I cashed one of those checks at any Bank because I never did! Never! They went directly to the business office! The thing with UDS is that they did use legitimate Pell grants and student loan companies. But us as students never saw that money. At least I didn't. So the school technically took all that money, lied to us all about accreditation and the amount of pay we could get out there after graduating. I remember hearing that they had changed their name to Sanford-Brown and a few years after that, I realized there were lawsuits against Sanford-Brown. I know there was a lawsuit against UDS, I actually think that lawsuit was going on in another state while I was attending the school around 2000, 2001. I am $13, 000 in debt to these scammers, have had six surgeries since then and I'm limited on the types of work I can do. It has wrecked my credit and I'm not even sure the company that is handling my student loan forgiveness is legitimate. They are called Nelnet. Wondering if anyone has them? Also I have read quite a few of the posts here and I think it really is time for a group of us to get together, hire a lawyer, and get these loans 100% forgiven. I was reading a little bit about the lawsuit and although the students were in a different state. I don't believe they received compensation but I do believe that their loans were forgiven. we need to do something about this and I would be more than willing to take the lead. I'm wondering if this is a case where a lawyer would take it pro bono or not have to pay until the case is settled? However I don't know because in the case of the other lawsuit, students did not receive monetary compensation but just loan forgiveness. My daughter just turned 21 and I was there when she was approximately 3 to 4 years old. Aren't we supposed to achieve forgiveness after 25 years? And I am trying to find out if Nelnet the company that now holds my loan and then I've been working with for quite a few years is even legitimate. navigating the USA Federal loan site is confusing at best and none of the options seem to apply to the type of loans we received. Has anyone actually spoken to a lawyer about our situation? And if so, what were you told? I would love to hear your stories and figure out a way that we can get those loans forgiven. At the very least we all deserve that. It has destroyed my credit, I am 56 years old now with multiple health issues and honestly I don't care about compensation. I just want my credit cleared and my loans forgiven. Also, are Sanford-Brown institute schools now also closed? Does anyone know if this original company that started UDS is working under another name again? Like they did when they switched from UDS to Sanford-Brown for their name? If I had to do it again I would have gone to STCC.and anytime since whenever anyone has said they were going to go to a business school like Branford Hall I have told them to beware and to go to a community college instead. So it's been like 19 years and I am still dealing with this issue. What about calling the office of the Massachusetts Attorney General? Also wondering if anyone has tried that. I am afraid it has been too long and we have all been forgotten :-( But maybe it's time we all woke them up and made them take action! I can be reached at my email address julieoconnor63@yahoo.com . Please mention " about my experience at UDS" in the subject so I will know it is safe to open it. Thanks, I know exactly how you all feel. It isn't right and very confusing &frustrating. It's time we all get our day in court. Julie O

I found out that there was in a fact a class action against UDS. This having been the case they should have done things differently and stopped manipulating people with their bait tactics promising numerous things that they never followed thru with.

I graduated from uds in Iselin nj in 2002...it was a joke to say the least. The only real certification I received was for CPR. And that was only bc they hired someone from a hospital to come teach and certify everyone there was no indication on the cpr card that uds was even involved. After graduating i was hired at the externship site after 3yrs there i left bc my mother was diagnosed with cancer and it was very devistating for my entire family. After one year not working i attempted to find work as a medical assistant everywhere i went i was told my certificate meant nothing bc the school was not accredited and i wasnt really certified. During hurricane Sandy all my documents were destroyed I went to the school and they would not help me. I have had a hard time since then financially and stopped paying the student loans. I would love to file a class action lawsuit against them I referred so many ppl to that school and I'm ashamed to even say that. Instructors came and went and grades were fixed so ppl would pass we had women in our classes constantly fighting and giving instructors a hard time that it was a problem to learn. Instructors would leave crying or go get drunk at dinner time at tgifridays across the parking lot and return intoxicated. These ppl truly didn't care about educating and showed it loud and proud several times they walked out and ALL of the complaints made to administration were dismissed as we were told everyone would pass. I would love to file a class action lawsuit if anyone in nj is going to file I have a few ppl who would love to be involved. My email is christina.rosa1981@yahoo.com

I am also in the same boat. I was a student of UDS in Springfield MA. They told me the same lies. That they were accredited and they are not. Credits do not transfer. They also did not help me with job placement. I made many calls to them complaining just to get no where. I am still paying on my loan, not working in the field and have had some extreme financial difficulties. I do not feel it's fair that we are all paying this amount of money for a school that did this to all of us. We definitely need a civil suit. There was one in another state against UDS and they paid out alot of money. Not sure on what grounds or why all of us were not included on that list. We all need to do something.

I'm on the same boat. I completed my program on 2003 in NY. Didn't get any help with job placement as promised, still paying loan, extra loans popped up from the same month I completed internship (which I didn't sign for), i was told the I can continue my education at a college and transfer my credits earned only to find out that Goodwin College wouldn't accept it even when it fell before there five year deadline. We need a civilsuit this is ridiculous, they need to remove this off Dept of Ed

Hello, I agree with all of you as I am in the same spot. I was also a student of UDS in Springfield MA. They told me all the same lies. They have not been any help in finding jobs. They are not accredited. I am not working in the field and still paying on a student loan for school that did me no good. Like many of you this had caused financial hardship. There was a lawsuit and a settlement however I am not sure why or what students were invloved and why not everyone who went there offered a settlement. I would love to hear any advice. I don't want to continue to pay for this loan. Any suggestions would be helpful. A civil suit would be even better. Thank you for your time.

Do you know about the settlement that happened? I'm not sure what the guidelines were but feel that all of us students of UDS should have been included. I also am a student of uds, I was told the same lies, I still have this student loan I can't repay. I'm not working in the field. They are not accredited like they said. I have no idea what I can do. Did filing help at all? Any information would be appreciated

I'm in the same boat as everyone else. I went to the same school in 2002 in Trevose, PA. They promised me a job placement after I graduated. When I went on interviews they said this school wasn't a credit school. Now, the student loan people are after me asking me to pay the student loan. Crazy!

I also attended UDS. It was a terrible experience to say the least. I'm trying to apply for that debt forgiveness program...I'll attach the link https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/borrower-defense

I graduated from UDS in 2001 and had no luck finding a job. I am still in student loan debt with this school and am trying to find a way to dispute the loan. If anyone has any info at all, please email me at mrspktgreen25@gmail.com. Thank you kindly in advance!

I agree with several dissatisfied students of UDS.
I was also a student at UDS and graduated in 1999, with what I thought was a certified medical assistant certificate. I was also under the impression that this school Ultrasound Diagnostic School, Iselin, NJ was an accredited school and to my dismay IT IS not.
I want to know what can be done as I am presently in debt and presently paying this loan back.

Hi! My friend Elizabeth went to that school for a program as well. She liked it there but she didn't get a job. When I was going to sign up for classes at U.D.S. they told me I couldn't because the school was closing. I would have to wait when it reopens again. I did. It was Sanford Brown Institute. I went there in 2005 and dropped out of one mod due to financial hardship. I was moving to CT because we got evicted out of our apartment due to lack of jobs. I moved back to Springfield, MA to finish school. I graduated. The jobs that were available were jobs at Mc Donald's, monster.com and other internet jobs. They were not in my field of study except for a Correctional Officer job at Ludlow jail.I took the test and failed it. I got a security job but the thing is that some of these co-workers went to a college for the same program. Well I didn't know the school was closing until we had the graduation ceremony. I am still stuck paying for a student loan for a school that closed down. I am stuck paying for a scam and these bill collectors keep calling for the same bill that S.S.D.I. is taking out of my check automatically. This whole thing is a scam. They were telling everyone to go to Branford Hall Institute but everyone knows that school is a scam. For the future, everyone is better going to a real college. T he reason why I went to Sanford Brown Institute is because I was told it was accredited and you can transfer your credits to another college. I was planning on going to Westfield State College to get my degree in Criminal Justice and that was suppose to be my Bachelors. They said my diploma is equivalent to an Associates Degree. They lied completely. Now that school is American Career Institute. They won't take me there. My student loans and they don't like students who go there on SSI or SSDI. I asked them about that to. They want people who work and take out student loans. I talked to a representative about the whole school situation. They can't figure it out either. Original price for the school was $16525.00. Now my student loan is $5000.00 give or take. None of it makes sense. Just a waste of time, lies, confusion, chaos, and b.s. because H.C.C. and S.T.C.C. they work with you and there's no b.s along with it. Cheaper and accredited. Now they say we have to use the Sanford Brown Institute in White Plains New York. That school is not accredited and the credits are not transferable. It's nothing but a joke with an unnecessary bill because I went to colleges before and after this school and these accredited colleges worked with you. I had to restart at another college because nobody took my credits at Sanford Brown Institute. It '[s a waste of my time. I am better off working.

I also graduated from UDS @2003 as a MA and have this student loan that i am stil trying to pay off. My understanding is that some of the students filed complaints against this school on cadwell street; in turn did not have to pay tuition back. If anyone has any information on this please contact me at iris.rosemond@gmail.com. Its saddens me that a school that promised to be accredited and really isnt would take advantage of people that all they are looking for is to better themselves. I was never able to find employment as a medical assistant no where but yet got stuck paying for the tuition. Doesnt seem right.

I graduated from Ultrasound Diagnostic School, in Chicopee MA, in 1999 with a medical assistant certificate. I am also very disappointed in all the staff who convinced me to attend because it was accredited. I paid full price out of my pocket for this school, which got me no where but in debt. I don't know if anything can actually be done now, since they are no longer a school, but if someone
comes up with an idea, please let me know.
Thanks,
Patty

I graduated in 2000, had a high GPA and am still paying the bill and not doing Medical Assisting. Teachers were coming and going the entire time. We were told we could go back at any time to retake classes. I had trouble with accredidations also. I can't get another student loan and can't afford to pay out of pocket. If anyone has information on a class action suit I am willing to join in. Please email me at matilda01129@yahoo.com

OMG I am in the same boat. I attended the Ultrasound Diagnostic School on Cadwell Dr. Springfield, Ma. in 2001. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA. I was even Student of the month! I got me nowhere. The instructors would up and leave in the middle of a coursel. No explination was given as to why they left. We went through 2 directors while I was at the the schoolo. They both left. I was stuck with student loans I couldn't afford to pay because I couldn't find a job. My externship was a disaster. The office manager told me straight out that the school I attended was inferior. She graduated with an associates degree in Medical Assisting from Springfield Technical Community College. She made it so difficult for me because of the school I went to that I couldn't finish my externship there. The school couldn't find anywhere else to place me to finish my externship. At the time I lived in Holland, Ma. but I was willing to travel to Worcester or Springfield. I found a job at Fallon Clinic that allowed me to finish my externship. No one from the school came to talk to the office manager. No one would return my calls. I had to leave the workforce to care for my mother in 2005. She passed away in Dec. 2009. I am 53 years old. I have been to several interviews but no one will hire me. I am currently living on Social Security Disability due to severe depression and anxiety. My credit is trashed because I couldn't afford to pay my student loans. If there is a law suit pending, please contact me. My e-mail is cummings620@aol.com That school promised me the world. I was a working single mom of 3 who couldn't afford to get scammed. PLEASE SOMEONE E-MAIL ME WITH ANY LAWSUIT INFORMATION! Thank you.

So sorry to here your story. This is pervasive with Gov Grant Money. Can you apply at a local Accredited School, i.e., Community College and try to speak with student councelors, Women's groups etc. Surely some of the education you received will be useful while you get the real thing. Can you apply for another Student Loan?
Don't give up. You just need the right people to be dealing with. These skills are in demand across the Country.
