deceptive charges
I just had a horrible experience with American Greeting Cards online. Found a cute card online as we all do from time to time. When I went to mail it, fairly, they wanted you to join up for a selection of memberships. The one I joined was ONE MONTH. Buried in the agreement is that it is a trial membership and that if you take no action, they will continue...

I signed up for a trial membership in 2005 for yahoo ecards. Every year since I have automatically been charged for renewal. I am not able to take my credit card information off their site or cancel my membership. This year I decided I wasn't going to pay for another year - it's only $15 but the point is I don't want it and I dont' want my credit card information stored on their website - it's my right to not have it stored there which is the main basis of my complaint. Since I could not do this via online I had to call and then I had to wait at least 30 minutes for someone to answer and then they had trouble finding my account because it was under an alternative email address - even though the one I gave them is the one I need to sign in to the account. I WILL NEVER AGAIN BUY AN AMERICAN GREETING PRODUCT AGAIN AND I WILL TELL EVERYONE NOT TO FALL FOR THEIR "TRIAL MEMBERSHIP" SCAM. A company should not be permitted to keep someone's credit card information on file - especially with all the problems lately with accounts being compromised.

scam
These people are total scammers. I signed up for a 30-day free trial. They charged my account $29.98 after 15 days. I called their customer service and after a dozen attempts I was able to actually speak to someone. I requested a refund and a cancellation. The representative agreed and gave me a confirmation number. 15 days later, no refund. I called back and after a dozen more attempts, I finally talked to a representative. I explained my circumstance and the representative claimed to have no record of a previous phone call or cancellation request. In addition, they claimed my membership trail was only for 14 days. They refused to refund my money. This business is very unethical. Beware.

This is criminal fraud. Cancelled in 2010. No charges in 2011, 12, 13. Then they start charging again in 2014. Noticed three years later.
Stay away. After putting in my credit card info this company charged a $1.00 to see if my credit card was valid. Two weeks later we were alerted that three fraudulent charge attempts were made on our credit card, totaling over $3, 000. Fortunately these were caught before they went through but we needed to cancel our credit card. We only hope that there weren't any other security breeches as a result of trying to send greetings cards through Americn Greeting online co.
I worked for this co. for 7yrs 9mos and they treat there employees like crap. they run there company by there own rules. I was injured on the job and they didn't want me to turn it into l&I but I did anyway I was back to work before I got any money because they were very slow in returning paper work. they never replied to the unemployment office to verify the info that I gave so they made it where I was denied unemployment. and to top off the cake this is the 21st of feb and have yet to get my w2. If you need a job work any where else but this company. there called "AMERICAN" greetings but they farm out the call center jobs to OTHER COUNTRTES! cant even understand them. whats up with that
Thanks for the warnings! I'm glad to say I checked before I bought. You kept me from being ripped off. Many thanks!
I just signed up for a week's trial and canceled on the 7th day. They charged me for the month anyway. I emailed support and was told that I had to cancel "during" the trial, , , well what exactly do they think the last day of a trial is!? That IS "during" the trial. They refuse to refund. Really bad business practice!
06/11/2012 Received PF Changs and Bonefish Grill from (icard gift card), Ft Lauderdale, FL (Hope they work!)
Thank you Complaints Board for being our voice!
6/10/2012 Received a gift certificate directly from Olive Garden...Thank you Olive Garden for sending the Gift Certificate!
American Greetings has still not sent anything. (Olive Garden sent a certificate on their own!)
American Greetings took advantage of my ONLY CHILDS love for me and ruined my 71st birthday.
As of 06/04/2012 I have not received my $100 gift cards and my son has not gotten his money back! SCAM!
My son sent me an e- card and $100 through American Greetings on 4/15/2012.
I followed the directions on the site and selected three gift cards for my very favorite restaurants. I chose The Olive Garden $25, PF Changs $25, and Bonefish Grill $50.
As of 06/4/2012 I have not received anything but excuses from American Greetings.
I checked with all the restaurants and found out they don’t do business with American Greetings.
yep, they're a rip off alright. I signed up for a trial and then canceled my subscription online. I even checked back on the website to make sure. Then 3 years later I notice they're still charging my account annually. Yes, I know I should have noticed before but the charge only comes through once a year. They totally refused to refund me even though I still had paperwork I printed out showing I had canceled. Turns out you have to go to some other, obviously well-hidden website to cancel. I showed them I hadn't used their services in all that time and they would not budge one inch. A lady from the BBB got involved after I sent her my paperwork showing I had canceled and they still refused to budge. If you go to Ohio BBB where they're registered you can see many complaints about the very same thing. All I can say is that they're a rotten company with deceptive business practices. They wound up scamming me for about $80
I have a similar problem and I am yet to figure out how to stop those guys charging my credit card every month.
trap for the unwary
Complete scam. You sign up for a "free trial period, " and they hope you forget about it, and after a few weeks they charge your credit card (without further notice) for a full year. Once you've been charged, there is absolutely no way to get a refund. You dial the number they give you, and you get an automated system with an endless round of voicemail "options" that go in circles, apparently forever, with absolutely no way to break out or talk to a real person. It's a nightmare and it's clearly been designed as a trap for the unwary.

I have been chasing this company to get a refund for overcharging my cc for over a month. I did not want to just cancel a trial membership because I would not get a refund for NOT being able to reach them. They have TWO "800" numbers that do not allow you to reach a live person if you follow their prompts to ask a question about a charge. When I finally gave up and used the automatic system to cancel my membership, I received an email but no mention of the exact date the cancellation took place. I finally got another number for them on line and used a prompt I thought might get me to a live person. After waiting an unusually long period of time, I finally spoke to a human. She politely informed me they NEVER refunded money regardless of circumstances. I am furious at such poor customer service. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE! BE AWARE they also are the same company that will automatically sign you up for BLUE MOUNTAIN CARDS! If you sign up for a trial membership for BLUE MOUNTAIN GREETING CARDS, you will NOT be able to reach a person by phone. Calls are all automated and will hang up on you if you try to reach someone in customer service.
joined for one year, American Greeting Card required a credit card. Tried to quit. But now that they have my discover card info they just can keep chargin me. Can not get in touch with themto quit. On hold for 45 min. numerous times. No way to email them.
Called corporate offices and they said they have nothing to do with the online business and sent me back to same number. Called my credit card and was going to cancel it but Discover said I agreed to this charge and even if I have no credit card American on Line can charge me and ruin my credit. This is a nightmare. Please do not use them unless you want the service for the rest of your life.
Here's a copy of the email I sent to American Greetings. I was only able to stop auto-deduct payment because I paid through PayPal. I went to every customer review site I could and filed a complaint. I also filed a complaint to the Better Business Bureau (they take a few days to post complaints, but there are MANY complaints against this company at the BBB). Reading through the BBB complaints, it seems the better way to cancel membership is via their 216-252.6778 number. The 800 #s, the 415 #s, and other #s are useless. Also, they are affiliated with Blue Mountain and Webshots. Here is my email what I copied to every consumer review I could find!
American Greetings,
You stink!
I signed up for your 7 day free trial membership and as instructed provided my PayPal billing information so that if I did not cancel you would begin billing monthly. I decided to NOT continue any membership services with you and followed instructions on cancelling membership choice.
However, much to my dismay, there is NO way to cancel a membership charge online. I made numerous calls to the number you provide [protected]). Several times I tried holding to speak to someone and no one ever answered. Several times I tried to get a call back and no one ever called back.
Therefore, I instructed PayPal to reject any attempt on your part to make any membership charges to my PayPal account/credit/debit card.
I consider your company to be a scam and your agreement to be fraudulent and will report you to the Better Business Bureau and leave terrible reviews about your practices wherever I can.
Shame on you.
roccomiamorcito@gmaiil.com
I also used PayPal . When I called, my account could not be found. I never activated it. But, AG responded in minutes to my online Contact Us request to cancel and sent me a confirmation. I noted in my comments that I had already deauthorized PayPal. I am not sure what would have happened if I had used a credit card.
After reading their information about automatic renewing and that you are not allowed to enter into a class action lawsuit against them this is enough for me to say No Way. That's not something any legitimate company would hide in a contract that you have to agree to in order to use their services. Am glad I read the reports here before getting taken by yet another disreputable company.
I signed up for a trial period and after sending one card I went to my account online and cancelled, so that I wouldn't get charged. Lo and behold, after the trial period was up, I was charged $19.99 for a year's membership. I called and spoke with a CS person, but was told that my account doesn't show that I cancelled. There's NO way they would accept that this is exactly what I did, and of course, there's no way I could prove that this is exactly what I did. This is indeed a SCAM! Also, I can't even get into my account now, because I can't get the website to properly load. It just sits on 'loading.' No other website I go to does this, so it has to be AGs problem. I, also, won't be purchasing any AG printed cards in stores anymore, as I don't want to support their enterprise in any way whatsoever! Stay away from these people if you don't want to participate in their scam.
Trap for the Unwary is right!
I've done this before and forgotten. I signed up for a week's trial; I cancelled it and forgot it. Just happened to catch a charge (like a roach) on my credit card bill. I called to get a refund and spoke to the automated voice: AGENT. AGENT. AGENT. Of course, it knew why I was there; it "cancelled" my trial and explained that of course, I wouldn't get a refund! Of course. Let's see what happens with next month's credit card. In fact, I'm going to call every week just to make sure it's cancelled. Beware. They seem so legit and are so not.
I signed up for a 30 day trial on July 10. They charged my credit card 8 days later. When I called and finally got through the endless loops of the phone system, they cancelled the membership but say they will not refund any money. So the next step is the bank to dispute the charge. American Greetings hides behind many different website names. They claim they only have a 7 day trial but if you do a search for a 30 day trial, a whole bunch come up, plus the account info when logged into American Greetings reflected that it was expiring on August 9.
I signed up for one year with American Greeting in 2011 and have been on auto-pay every year since then without noticing the yearly charge until this year. My Visa card expired 2 years ago but somehow they were able to get the new expiration date without my authorization. They say I'll receive a refund for the most recent charge but we'll see. I'm sure there are many people who don't check for every charge on their credit card statement each month and companies like American Greeting get away taking money from countless numbers of people.
I tried for years to stop them from billing, my bank has even tried to contact them to assist me to cancel the automatic deductions. Please contact the BBB of Cleveland, as I have. They deserve a class action law suit.
Beware the fine print for the trial period that signs you up for a monthly or annual recurring charge!
I go no confirmation email, never used the service again, and only months later noticed the charges.
On the positive front, I called, selected the option for technical support, insisted on a refund, and they reversed the last 6 months of charges...so apparently they are getting more sensitive to the complaints.
overcharged
This company has obviously done their research. They know that most consumers will not be able to reach them while their 'trial membership' is in effect in order to cancel it. They make it almost impossible to reach them in fact with a very frustrating automated phone system with no obvious menu item for talking to a human. I'm sure that there is one there but I couldn't find it until I tried technical support. Once you miss canceling your trial membership (and most will no doubt) they will bill you $15.99 for a full year membership which you don't want. If you're lucky enough to notice this on your credit card statement as I was - good luck getting anyone on the phone to complain! There are multiple instances of disclaimers saying that there are no refunds once this billing has taken place - it's just your tough luck. The sad thing is that I actually thought that I had canceled this during the free trial.
This company is clearly taking advantage of people with the type of billing that has been all but banned amongst cable and phone companies who used to try to do this - offering a service for free as a hook and then forcing the consumer to jump through hoops to stop this service from becoming a cyclical automated billing nightmare.
DEFINITELY AVOID THIS COMPANY. Buy real cards!

Hi my name aaron padgett.I have put my application in since February, it has been under review for awhile, I haven't heard anything .I worked there before in 2017 and lost job for attendance, I would love to have a second chance.I have done a lot of growing up. Thank you for your time .
I cancelled my membership - SUCCESSFULLY - online over an entire day before my trial period ended. Then, lo and behold, they charged me anyway! I tried to call, but it was only some automated person who said I didn't exist in their system (funny, I seemed to exist well enough when it was time for them to take my money). I emailed them and YAY, got an answer! I go onto my bank account a few days later to see they only gave me a partial refund! TELL ME what exactly entitles them to keep ANY of my money when I clearly and successfully canceled in plenty of time?!? I'm the one who should get the extra for the hassle of having to call/contact them in the first place! I regret EVER having used this stupid company and it will be the LAST time I will ever make that mistake. I've even boycotted their in-store cards!
I just filed a dispute with my bank for the $15.99 AMG charged me last week on my debit card.
I received no goods, no communication and not even a receipt for the charge.
I figured I must be a member now, so I tried to sign up and it rejected all my emails as not being registered with them.
Go figure!
Yes, contacting them is another circus. I have not tried to call after reading all the complaints, I did try and send them
an email. I emailed them straight info@am...com and got nothing back and it's been 5 days.
I tried to email from their website and now get a This Page is Temporarily Unavailable. Hopefully the dispute will
put an end to it. I would avoid them at all costs!
If I did sign up for a trial, I honestly don't know!
I received no email or phone confirmation, or receipt for the $15.99 that showed up in my checking as a debit charge last week. I have disputed the charge with my credit union (in process) and tried in vain to contact AM. Even by email, if I use the contact page, it now say, sorry this page is temporarily unavailable. On top of that I have received any goods!
There is a list of other email contacts on their main site, the relevant ones like 'consumer.relations' just bounces when I email it.
When I try to sign on as a new member, it does not recognize any of my email addresses. Gee, that's funny I thought I had paid them for a membership, if not what was the money for?
I guess at some point I agreed to give them some money and they did not have to do anything for it, not even issue a receipt.
There are many companies that are hard to deal with or to change things after joining, or making a purchase, but this one is clearly predatory!
Thanks! I only I knew
There was an unknown charge on my bank statement (probably via identity theft). But, found it impossible to get through. Since I never have done business with them, I could file a claim with my bank and be done with it!
Here's the link for AG phone numbers.
American Greetings — trap for the unwary
Don't waste your time (we learned first hand) by calling the 800 number. Call [protected] to reach
a customer service rep by phone.
The link below my posts to another complaint against AG on the Complaints Board with good info
and the link that lists their different phone numbers.
I had their service for 2 years. They kept jacking up the price and now they are $29.99. I thought No Way! So I try to cancel. It is a nightmare. IT is super easy to sign up online, but you have to use there phone system to cancel. Canceling is not as hard as getting a refund within 30 days as the Terms of Sale state. I wasted hours trying to get a hold of a customer service rep until I read this blog and asked for a New Membership instead. I asked the lady if there had been another way to get in contact with a person and she said no...I also looked around the website...no customer service email...not good. I hope to see my credit card credited soon..if not, I'll let you know and file a complaint with BBB and the Attorney General.
I will NEVER buy another AMERICAN GREETINGS card again. This company is such a fraud. If they were truly customer oriented instead of money mongers, they would make canceling memberships available online and would not claim that their customers "automatically" signed up for renewals each year. Just try getting through to their number to cancel a membership...impossible to do in the timeline given. I despise this company and it's underhanded methods of operation. HALLMARK has my forever business! They have a good reputation for a reason.
Thank you SO MUCH for the phone number. I had to FIGHT on the phone to get my money back. 30-day "free trial" was billed to my credit card 7 days later. The girl I spoke with originally had NO POWER. I insisted on speaking to her supervisor who ALSO fought me, telling me I didn't sign up correctly. HA! I stuck to my guns and told them I would NOT pay this bill and would take it to the Better Business Bureau if necessary. They immediately gave me a cancellation number and HUNG UP.

I agree with this complaint. AmericanGreetings also took (stoled ) $15.00 from my account. I haven't been to this sight in over a year and a half and they still took money from my account. I've "E" mailed them twice and they are too scared to return my money nor to get back to me!
They should be Shut down!
