After moving, I contacted KCPL by phone to pay remaining balance at old address. I was told that I could pay half (now) and to call back to make the remaining payment. I asked and was assured that collections would not be an issue after I was told I could not set up my bank account to have it withdrawn automatically. The rep calmly told me that 'it takes a while' for collections to be an issue. The rep split the sum balance, which I paid over the phone, with a verbal promise to pay remainder on the first of the upcoming month. Two weeks later, I received a letter from a collections agency demanding the remaining balance. I called KCPL and spoke with another rep, who told me she had no control over it, and that it was their computer system that handles collections automatically. This rep told me that the collection would be removed once I made the payment. INFORMATION FOR KCPL-I ALREADY MADE A PAYMENT WITH A PROMISE TO PAY REMAINDER AND BROUGHT UP COLLECTION CONCERN MYSELF. If I wasn't assured that this would not have happened, I would have just paid the entire amount. This may seem like small fries to alot of people, but I am trying to buy a house and have been diligently working on my credit. And last time I checked, collections is for people whom make no attempt to pay. I called and had this handled. If KCPL is going to shift the blame to their computers, then why do they have staff answering calls? KCPL needs to use some common sense. This is a case of abuse of power or negligence at best if their computers are taking over and they are helpless at the mercy of Dell. Nobody has any accountability anymore. Meanwhile, the guy that makes the call, makes a payment, and makes a verbal promise, is screwed and now has to deal with the caliber of persons that are typically employed as a debt collectors.
