Hey ladies, You have no idea how relieved I am to hear that I am not alone... I have never really responded to any blogs like this before.. But this one... I must! I am 23 and I had my daughter June 19th 2008. About a month or so later I decided to go ahead and get the Mirena because as so many of you have also said.. The drs. really so talk it up. They told me it was the best thing they had our right now.. Very little side effects, and i would have a very light period of I even had one at all.. Well shoot.. My period only lasted about 3 days before i ever got pregnant.. and it had always been light.. And when I was pregnant I did enjoy not having to worry about. So why not.. Well I gave it a try.. I spotted for about a month or 2 if I remember right.. and then nothing.. I didn't have a period. Besides an occasional light spotting every once in a while. So far so great... So I thought.. I got the abdomal (if that how its spelled...) pain.. Shortly after I had it put in.. and I mean SHORTLY after.. I began to notice an odor down there.. and it was not a good one at all! It was soo embarrassing.. I kept thinking it was all in my head.. I was living with my boyfriend (soon to be husband) at the time.. and I showed him.. I wiped my hand on my creases and he smelled it and said "ya that does kinda stink... You just need to take a shower.. So do I".. So even more so I thought it was in my head.. But as time went by I kept telling him how the smell doesn't go away after I take a shower.. It's as if I haven't even showered... I knew something was wrong.. But didn't once think it may have been the IUD... Me and my boyfriend had some problems through out our relationship.. He slept with other ppl... So that worried me, and I constantly wondered what was wrong and did he accidently get something from someone... I went and got tested multiple times. And let my midwife know that I was worried about the odor.. and that I never had it before.. My boyfriend tells me I never had a smell and he always loved how clean I was.. I did NOT feel clean anymore.. I felt so modest... and insecure.. I didn't know what to do.. I didn't know what to think. It was summer and I didn't go anywhere or really do anything because the smell was sooo strong.. You could smell it through my clothes.. the smell doesn't go away till I wash my clothes.. So my laundry basket stank! I began to think that I may have been experiencing a bacterial infection.. So she gave me some medicine for it cuz she noticed the smell as well... But my test results ended up coming back negative all around.. I went back in a couple weeks later cuz the smell was still there and stronger than ever.. she said "well all of your tests have been negative... Are you sure its not just way my body smells?".. I told her I didn't think so... cuz it never smelled like that before.. and she replied. "well you had a baby. Your body changes after a dramatic experience like that." So again I thought I was trippin.. And Just letting things get to my head.. But deep down I knew something wasn't right..
I also noticed my hair... I have ... well had (cry) extremely thick long curly hair my entire life! I almost didn't know what to do with it all cuz there was SOO MUCH! I have always had some hair come out when I would wash my hair.. That is natural. But as time went by I noticed my little balls of hair were getting bigger and bigger... And as i would wash my hair my hands would be consumed by hair that just.. fell out.. Me and my man both figured it was cuz of stress.. and all I ever heard from people when I would bring it up was "most people lose hair after having children.."... ok... So I just did all I could to stay stress free.. Which was pretty hard being a new parent... And having this odor and hair loss. And all the other side effects.. ( Which I just recently read through and I couldn't believe I had just about every one that I read.. It made me cry) For the time I had it put in, I believe it was late july 2008 till about 6 months ago... Feb 2010.. I have been dealing with the horrible side- effects and not getting any answers for them what so ever! I would go to a friends house and they would smell it.. but not say anything.. Just say "what is that smell!?" I would play dumb... What else was I to do..
Then the abdominal pains began to get extremely painful.. I have always been pretty good with dealing with pain.. And I wasn't going to take myself to the ER for someone to tell me im fine.. when I know Im NOT! It got to the point to where the paing was almost constant.. The times it would finally go away was such a RELIEF! I charished it! But it wouldn't take long before the pain was back .. I could barely bare to walk, sit, stand, anything.. Pushing on pain didn't help at all.. There was no stopping it.. I convinced myself the mirena had to be in wrong or something for these things to be happening! so I finally went in and told my midwife I wanted to take it out! I couldn't take the pain.. I told her that if things didn't change after taking it out I would maybe get it put back in.. or maybe look into the birth control that goes into your arm.. I am not having sex anyway. So I really don't have a need for it. And when I do I will look into getting it again.. (HELL NO!) I WILL NEVER LET THAT THING ANYWHERE NEAR ME AGAIN! I will NEVER reccommend it to anyone! I told my little sister she should get it.. Till I learned all the side effects were because of it.
I have had it out for about 6 months now.. The abdominal pains when away immediaty after it was removed! Had only slight cramping from time to time. But NOTHING like it was.. I was losing so much hair that I started washing my hair only once a week because It was soo depressing to wash my hair and when I take my hands from my head all there is is hair. You can't even see my hands.. I cry just typing about it.. ...And now my hair is less than half as thick as it was before I got on this stupid DEFECTIVE birth control! It has changed me completely! And I hate that I waited so long to find all this out! I was just scared I suppose... My love is the only one I talk to about it.. Besides the hair loss. But with that everyone just says its stress.. I know that is wrong though not only because I now have this proof.. But because My life has been stress free for the past year almost.. Besides the fact I am stressin about my odor and My darn hair falling out! GO FIGURE! .. Now im just wondering how long its going to be before these symptoms go away... Or what I can do to get them treated.. If anyone knows anything please let me know..
Also I am willing to fight this 100% in a law suit! Lets get this thing going! They need to get it off the list of birth control! It's the worst thing that has ever happend to me.. It has ruined my social life.. because I don't want to go around people cuz in a matter of time the smell will be noticeable..

In Need of Advice/ Help..
I am 100
I am 27 years old and have had my IUD since March 2009. My first six months of having it I bleed all the tim. After that I was ok for a bit but having sex would hurt. So I went to the doctor and he said I needed to trim down the string, which he did and that help. For the past three almost four years I have had pain in my groin area as well and have had several ultrasounds showing normal. After hearing everyone, I think I want to take it out. I called my doctor about the recall and they stated their are women with lawsuits but there has never been an FDA approved recall, so it is not true. It is just women, like most of us that have experienced problems and are now moving forward with lawsuits.
I've had my Mirena in for 6 months now, and I have no problems or odors, it did hurt and get bad cramp the first two months though. but now it's fine. Everyone's body reacts different though, and the Doc did mention that to me...
I've had my mirena in for about four months now with no problems at all.
I have had my mirena since march of 09'. Since then I have experienced every single symptom; no sex drive :/ depression :/ constantly sleepy & by that I mean 11 hrs of sleep and after 8 hours awake I could fall asleep standing. I had no motivation to physically do anything! I was/am drained. That is not the person I am. My attitude and mood can change at a drop of a dime. I feel bad for my family because it was turning me into a monster! Besides that I do experience "that" odor. Same senario when I went to my Gyno. Randomly stomach pain... Few n far between. An experience/ symptom I find is odd and seems commen also, is pregnancy symptoms. I gets belly flutters, sickness, memory loss. I kept this device in for so long because it does the job. But do your doctors tell you what job mirena is actually doing? Mirena is not preventative birth control it terminates pregnancy, after Sperm and egg meet... Some symptoms you have are... Sorry to tell you, due to just that. When I found this out I was literally sick to my stomach. Needless to say... I have an apt bright and early to get this "thing" out :) good luck to everyone experiencing this bull... I hope my post contributes and gives some knowledge & I also hope you do the same and spread the word how horrible mirena is! Xoxo
OMG! am also going to get this out ASAP! This is my 2nd one, didnt have to many problems with the 1st that i got after having my son in 06...had a few pains but thought it was just my body changing after having him. But now with my 2nd one that i got in Aug. 2011... i have had the worst back pain, the bad smell also, discharge & bacterica infections even after taking meds it returns, ive had to wear pantie liners 24/7, my mood as been awful! am always tired even after getting more than 6-8 hrs of sleep, and the pelvic pain as been worst than having my son... now has am typing this my back pain is so bad i can barely stand at work..I thank everyone for sharing their issues...glad am not alone...callin to Dr. today!
I have had the iud for only 2 months and have experienced the strong odor. Does it go away with time!
I’m sooooo grateful that I found this blog! I called this morning after reading some of these posts, and am getting this thing taken out in less than 48 hrs. I have the Mirena IUD, but have only had it for 4 ½ months. I got it put in when my second child was 6 weeks old, thinking it would be a good method until we wanted to have another baby (some day). For the last 3+ months my heart has been racing at night, I’ve had numbness in my hands and feet, anxiety, mood swings, headaches AND ovarian cysts! 2 months after getting it put in, I was in severe pain and got in to see my OB. They did an ultrasound and found that each ovary had a cyst. I have also had a foggy head and just don’t feel normal, that’s the best way to describe it. I pray that once this ‘thing’ is removed that I can get my life back and feel normal again. I have a 20 month old and a 6 month old and it makes me so mad that this ‘thing’ has caused me to lose precious time with my babies and not be the best mom that I can be. I hope that they will take it off the market and give us some sort of reimbursement for all of our pain and suffering. I can’t believe that doctor’s still recommend this thing, with all of these risk factors.
I got the same iud in, in March 2012. At first it was all great.. And then.. The severe cramping started. I thought it was just normal with having this thing, because my gyn said i would have some mild cramping. Well, i was like okay that's fine. I can deal with that. Well.. It's not mild, it's severe. It's so bad, i double over. Then my period started out really light, but it would last all month long. I would only go about a week maybe 2 weeks without having a period. Then i started getting this horrible smell. It was just light at first but in the past 2 months i have noticed a huge increase in the smell. It's very embarrassing. And now i hear there is a lawsuit and recalls on this thing and a bunch of girls are having the same symptoms and problems? I've got it scheduled for removal October 23, 2012. I will never get it again and i will never recommend it! I hate this thing! Bring on the lawsuit!
I'm trying to see of anyone is experiencing what I am experiencing .. I got the iud in August 2011 and still have it In now (July 2012) I've had to vaginal bacteria infections where I was put on two antibiotics and the smell went away . I'm experiencing hair loss, and the most embarrassing of all armpit odor. I've never had this problem before and I've tried everything! Nothing works, I also have no desire to have sex, which is not like me. Is anyone else experiencing the bad armpit odor? I don't know what to do! Definitely thinking about getting the iud removed.
I have the absolute worst headaches! I get very dizzy at times! I've had mine for a year and some weeks. I don't have sex anymore and I don't know if it's because of the odor because I do have one. My boyfriend has never mention one but I know it's there. I have so much moisture in my underwear that it makes me itch! Sorry for tmi but I thought that possibly I had a brain tumor or something was wrong because my head would and still hurts extremely bad. I am considering getting it removed but don't want to go without having that protection. I'm glad that there are other women that have experienced the odor and has finally gave me a explanation for the migraines/headaches. Called the Dr she said that headaches/migraine was not a possible side effect. I stay talking baths for the odor because I think that other ppl can smell me. I don't even prefer to shower because I think that taking a bath I can soak and air off. Thanks ladies for helping me. I will no longer be a mirena user!
Had mine removed today after having it in for three months I had a the pregnancy side with no reward of a baby will never recommend to anyone. Weight gain, hair loss. I had more sex when I was pregnant. Wholesale condoms are new best friend.
Hey ladies I have mine placed in april or 2012 and we are in May to almost june and I am having it removed. I cant take the smell. My sex life is gone my going out is gone I have had nothing going on that I was scared that maybe I caught something from my previous relationship but all test show negative. Thank god but this is by no means a great thing to have. I used all these remedies yogurt tea tree oil but nothing helps. I honestly wish that I would have done my research on this before anything. My hair was falling out as well I also thought the same thing stress. I dont understand how DRs can say oh dont worry its nothing its normal no this does a horrible thing to women I dont feel the same Like I shower 6-7 times a day and nothing. I am so embarrassed to even date until I know this smell is gone for good. sign me up for a lawsuit cause this is so not right. My name is MC
I experienced the embarrassing odor as well ...
Turns out it was hair that accumulated around the strings. And not from a brush or bathroom floor sex...
Once I removed the nasty little hair ball, the smell is gone. I do check my strings almost every day now due to the extreme paranoia that this experience rendered.
Was the odor constant for y'all ?
Same thing with me, the oder the headaches, bad lower back aches, i was vomiting every morning, the bad cramps, made me sleepy all the time, i could be talking be talking and id fall asleep on u...i don't recommend to No one
Wow I thought I was losing it too and was glad to read your comments ladies. I have only had my Mirena for a month and this week I am noticing this horrific odor and I like the the rest of you am extremely self conscious that others are smelling it too. I wear scented pads which I change frequently to control the smell. If those of us that post have this issue it can't be all of our heads. I am seriously considering having this removed as soon as possible. Thanks for sharing your horror story with the rest of us. Really validates my initial concern.
Iv had my mirena for 3 months now, the only side effect I have is the smell... It's very strong (smells like I'm incontinent) and is very strong, I have to wear pads at work so I can control the odour throughout my day making hourly visits to the loo to change and freshen up, they never told me about this side effect when being advised to have the mirena fitted.
OMG I thought it was just me! I've had my mirena in for 4 1/2 years I got it in 3 months after I had my son, he'll be 5 December 30th and I haven't had my period once! no light bleeding or anything, it seemed great at first, but i started to get a little concerned because, after all your period happens to cleanse you. So I went to get a second and third opinion and both dr.'s told me it was normal. Ok so i was fine, but about 4 months on it I gstarted getting horrible pains that I thought hey twere cramps as if I was getting my period, like I had all the symptoms but no bleeding. Now they're constant and the odor is happening also I went to my gyn she told me I had a bacterial infection and that was normal well I took the medicine and still have it, I went back to the dr and she said said i was fine but the odor is still there and worse than ever! I went back to the dr. recently and now I'm told I have cysts, so all of a sudden I develop these cysts and I can't prove it (yet) but I just know its from the mirena, I also get these horrible migraine headaches everyday so bad I get nauseous. My next visit this thing is coming out! I rather have 10 more kids than go through this, I wish I never got it in. If there's a lawsuit sign me up, if this thing caused all these problems who knows what else it's done to our bodies that we just haven't gotten symptoms for yet.
