Think twice before relying on Instacart for an important purchase.
Two days ago, I placed an order through the Instacart website. During checkout, I was offered the option to add another item in order to qualify for free delivery, so I added one.
After placing the order, I received a confirmation indicating that Ralphs would fulfill it. However, the main item I had ordered was later removed from the order without any notification or explanation. The additional item was delivered very quickly. Since I had added it only to qualify for free delivery and no longer needed it after the main item was removed, I decided to return it. I had to drive to Ralphs myself to make the return.
My receipt shows a $2 automatically suggested tip and a $2.99 Service Fee. I understand that the $7.99 standard delivery fee was waived, and I am not disputing the tax or the small bag fee. What I find difficult to understand is this:
• the order was accepted;
• the primary item was removed without notifying me;
• I was left to deal with the consequences myself;
• yet a tip was still automatically included;
• the Service Fee remained.
A tip is supposed to reflect service actually provided. If a customer orders a meal at a restaurant and the main dish is unavailable, the customer would reasonably expect an explanation and would not normally be expected to tip for a meal that was never provided. I believe the same basic principle should apply to an online shopping service.
I understand that an item can become unavailable. That can happen. What matters to me is how the company handles the situation. In this case, I was not notified that the main item had been removed, and I had to make the return myself after the fact.Instacart describes its refund process as “simple and transparent.” Unfortunately, that was not my experience.
I am sharing this review not because of the relatively small amount of money involved, but because I believe potential customers should know what can happen when an important item in an order is removed after the order has been accepted.
For me, the issue is not the few dollars. It is whether a customer can reasonably rely on the service to fulfill the purpose for which the order was placed and to clearly communicate when it cannot.
Based on this experience, I would recommend that customers think carefully before relying on Instacart/Ralphs for an important or time-sensitive purchase.

That is a clear breakdown of trust. You are not upset about the money, you are upset about the silence. Here is what you can do: request a refund for the service fee and the tip directly through Instacart's help center, and specifically mention that the main item was canceled without notification. If they refuse, dispute the service fee with your credit card. Also, avoid using Instacart for critical items and consider using Ralphs' own pickup or delivery service instead. You did the right thing by returning the item yourself, but you should not have had to.
