We had Andrew come out and do an energy audit in mid February. We had a plan to 1) seal our sill plate, 2) add insulation in basement, 3) replace vapor/moisture barrier in our crawlspace, 4) seal our ducts with mastic, 5) replace weather stripping on front door and basement door to bulkhead.
I will say, Andrew was professional, on time and knowledgeable. However, this was the only redeemable part of the process. During his visit, I spoke with Andrew regarding my skepticism of Homework Energy’s quality of work based on other reviews - he assured me that all work would be completed satisfactorily.
On March 10, a crew was supposed to arrive between 12pm-2pm. They called at 12:45pm to state they had just finished a job in Barnstable and would be at our house within 20 minutes. They showed up at 4:15pm. The crew leader was Brandon and by 5:30pm they were gone. I went downstairs to check the work they claimed was done and I was absolutely appalled by what I saw. They used expanding spray foam to insulate and seal our sill plate - however, they did not allow the foam to expand and harden BEFORE they stuffed insulation over it (completely ruining the R value of the insulation) Ultimately, making a horrendous mess. The “moisture/vapor barrier” they installed had the same result. In all honesty, I could have trained a monkey to do a better job. They didn’t even bother attempting to do the other work that was supposed to be done.
Obviously, I contacted Homework’s Energy and they had a “manager” William come out to inspect the work. He agreed with my assessment - it all needed to be removed, discarded and replaced (huge waste of material, time, and money).
On March 25th, Jayden arrived at my door and greeted me with saying, “What up, what’s good”, which I found extremely unprofessional given our first experience on March 10. He had no idea this was a “call back” to fix the work previously done. However, I figured let’s give them a chance to make it right. Jayden and his other crew member spent most of the afternoon attempting to complete the work.
Unfortunately, the end result was the similar. The moisture/vapor barrier was/is not sealed and there are huge gaps you can put your hand under them - completely defeating the purpose of a moisture barrier. Also, they use my walls as a hand rag. They wiped mastic adhesive all over my fireplace bricks and walls. They also just left parts of the wall that was supposed to be insulated completely exposed.
I contacted Homework’s Energy, again, and once again, they sent William out to “inspect” the work. This time, my patience had basically run out. William attempted to tell me, “this is how moisture barriers are supposed to be installed.” At that point, I shoved my hand underneath the exposed barrier and said, “Really? How is a moisture/vapor barrier effective when it’s not sealed.” He proceeded to try and tell me, “I have been doing this for 5 years, and this is correct.” I replied “Well, that simply tells me you do not have a solid understanding of how moisture and vapor work.” It’s pretty simple - for a moisture/vapor barrier to be effective, it must be completely sealed to prevent moisture and vapor from escaping the crawlspace.
William said, “do you want me to have another crew come out?” I stated, that I have zero confidence in Homework’s to do a thorough and complete job without damaging my property in the process.
Basically, from what I can tell, their employees are NOT well training and DO NOT have the necessary experience to do the work. Also, it’s obvious they have ZERO pride in their work.
I see Homeworks Energy say constantly in review responses, “this is not the level of service we strive for”, but let’s be honest, if you have to say that constantly, something is seriously wrong.
I have since reached out to my State Representative David Veira, state senator Dylan Fernandes and Mass Save.
