WyzAnt Stay away from these rip off site

I signed up for this website hoping to make some extra money. I am a full time college student, studying to become a certified teacher. I have 2 associates degrees and am a member of the international honor society Kappa Delta Pi.
As soon as I paid for the background check and passed it, I got an email from wyzant saying that I was not qualified.

Hi Gossaine, I read your review about Wyzant. I had the same problem with them and a local tutoring company as well. That's why I created my own tutoring website, TextbookTactics.com. We do not charge a commission to host tutor profiles, we charge a low monthly rate of $19.99 and you can receive up to three months free when you sign up. We provide a lot of free, helpful videos to students which provides our tutors with a large client base that can find their profile.
Best,
Shawn

WyzAnt Would not recommend to anyone

Abysmal customer service. They treat tutors very poorly and charge a starting fee that is 40% of the total fees paid on the website by students. Would not recommend to anyone.

After not receiving 2 checks that were supposedly sent to me at my NYC business address (never had problems getting other mail), they shut down my tutoring account on the same day that I was supposed to see a student who really needed my help. The student's info was contained in the account so I could not contact them. I NEVER received payments and they SCREWED the student. TERRIBLE SERVICE!

WyzAnt They are a horrible company and I urge any who wish to tutor not to bother with these scam artists

I signed up as a tutor with WyzAnt. They are a horrible company and I urge any who wish to tutor not to bother with these scam artists and have nothing to do with them. I am a certified teacher having a teachers license in mathematics. I thought I would tutor students in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and other math subjects. This service is pathetic. It is a scam and should be shut down by the consumer protection agency.

No matter what student I contacted assuming they are real and exist, I got zero responses after about 40 tries. Every message is the same. The student would get back to me via their email. We are not allowed to use our own emails. No one emailed my account, not one so called student called. Mind you I am not some [censored] off the street. I AM A CERTIFIED MATHEMATICS TEACHER FULLY LICENSED BY THE STATE. I got zero responses.
This service is corrupt and is about as big as a rip off scam service as their is. I urge anyone who wants to tutor especially those who wish to tutor in math to not waste their time with this site. To my fellow mathematics teachers, this is your warning. Avoid this site and use your time for more productive pursuits.

Pls. be aware of the Platform policy that doing the Homework assignment during class is fine. But pls. don't ever agree do it and send.

Dear Gayani,

After reviewing your account, Wyzant is ending your access to its platform according to paragraphs 17 and 18(b) of the Independent Tutor Agreement. It has come to our attention that a student requested that you complete work on his or her behalf. According to our records, you agreed to complete this work and as such, we will deactivate your account effective immediately.

If you disagree with this action and wish for us to reconsider, then within 10 calendar days from this notice, you may provide Wyzant with documents or other information for review.

Regards,

The Wyzant Team

I've been tutoring with Wyzant approximately 9 months and have logged roughly 180 hours in that time. It was a bit difficult getting students the first few months, but that issue fixed itself after I had a few ratings. I could have logged more, but I want to tutor part-time and I do. I've have enough hours that Wyzant's 40% cut has dropped to 30%. It will drop to 20% by the end of summer. Yes, they charge an additional 9% service fee.

Of course I'd rather Wyzant's cut was less. But they do provide me a service and I make much more than I would make with other tutoring platforms like Varsity Tutors or Chegg and I make much more than the local tutoring agencies like Club Z, Nuturing Wisdom pay. In some cases (e.g. Varsity Tutors) I'm pretty sure the clients also pay more at Varsity than I charge on Wyzant. It definitely appears Varsity takes a much larger cut than Wyzant but Varsity (and most firms) are less transparent about their cut.

I'm listed on a number of other platforms; some are free to the tutor. Most result in zero leads. So they aren't even worth the time to enter a biography.

I do also find some clients with local advertising using signs, flyers and personal recommendations. I adjust my fees so that I make a little more with clients I find myself and they pay a little less. But I have a much larger business using Wyzant that without so my earnings are better. I also don't have to do much work to find those clients.

I should note that I did tutor for Varsity for a short time a while back. Oddly, even though Varsity's sales staff make the sales, I find it easier to find and land students at Wyzant. Also, the students are higher quality at Wyzant in the sense that the average match is more appropriate to my skills. (The students from Varsity were nice kids-- not knocking them. But the sales staff intermediary and their communication sometimes resulted in mis-matches which never occur when I can message back and forth with potential clients.)

Wyzant also has an online option. Their online whiteboard is reliable. I don't need to pay a monthly fee to get features I like. (Free whiteboard exist, but can be unreliable or lack decent features.)

I've never treated a client I got through Wyzant worse than a client I got from a flyer.

Wyzant isn't perfect, but it certainly isn't a scam. A tutor can list at Wyzant and on other platforms simultaneously and see which works best for them. If you can't get students on Wyzant, the problem may not be Wyzant.

I think that Wyzant is a terrible company. They collect up to 40% of a tutor's compensation and then charge students a 7% service fee. Wyzant collects up to 47% for every hour of tutoring! Due to getting up to 47% of each hour, tutors have an incentive to raise their prices, which is obviously bad for students. A Wyzant student is less valuable to a tutor than a student they get from other sources. I would not hesitate to cancel on a Wyzant student if another student wanted to have a meeting. The leads are also not very good at least the ones that I get. I send out applications and despite having a 5 star rating, I get very few responses. I have connected with a couple of students over the past year. One was somewhat of a foreign student who mostly wanted free information and the other one was what I thought was a russian hooker.

I have been a tutor with Wyzant for close to 2 years now. It was difficult to get students at first. I sent many offers of my tutoring services to many perspective students. Eventually, I gained a few students, then a few more; then, yet again more. I made certain that I took good care of my students. The only getting paid 60% at the beginning was a little painful. BUT, I kept providing good quality service. So, I got upped to 65%, then 70%; to where I am now at 75%. I am not that many hours away from the 80% mark.

Aside from local private tutoring, I actually get 5-6 days per week, of 6-8 hour days of tutoring, from Wyzant alone. The other days of the week I might get 4 hours.

I provide high quality tutoring for my students. I have nearly 100 student feedbacks. I presently have greater than a star score of 4.9 out of 5 (okay, 4.92 stars out of 5 stars). The people whom I have met locally, along with having tutored online (from across the United States: these are real people.

There's rules about not scheduling an appointment with a students, until Wyzant has their confirmed payment information on file. Since I am nowhere near desperate for new students - I will wait things out for students to get their payment information updated. There are plenty of students out there who are willing to pay for my time, that I don't worry about those who don't update their payment information. Some might stall for 1-2 weeks. Others might not ever do so. With nearly 400 tutoring hours (with Wyzant alone, never mind private tutoring), I am okay with waiting things out. with such a significant feedback score, and a good steady cash flow that has come in over the past 6-8 months, why fret?

Wyzant has provided a platform and an opportunity. It was there waiting for me. I had to be incredibly diligent, timely, provide superior service for my students - and make certain that people were very very happy about the tutoring lessons that they received.

The best advice for new tutors: make certain that you have other income coming in while waiting to get to the higher percentage earnings levels; make a name for yourself, by going through where students are asked for questions. I did this early on. Students got a chance to see how detailed I was at answering questions. Because people had responded so well to my answers regarding both accuracy and quality, word soon got around. Potential students started coming to me, rather than going to others.

If one simply lists themselves on the website, along with sending info to potential students about picking them - but, nothing tangible that students can see to back that up: all of the 'credientials' in the world won't help you. You haven't gone the extra mile to gain their trust!

Wyzant has provided a great opportunity. I have worked very hard and diligent in providing superior tutoring service for my students. The feedback and the hours of tutoring, along with the money made: it's been great. I am looking forward to continued success with this. The people at Wyzant have been incredible. The students have been very grateful. I have received such positive feedback, along with REAL MONEY - after having tutored real people.

Tutors being lazy and not giving a powerful and clear and convincing effort to gain students: the problem is on their end - not the end of Wyzant. I don't have any connections there. I know absolutely nobody in their area of the United States. I get rated high and paid for the superior job that I keep providing students.

Whenever students get high 90's and 100% on their tests and final exams; whenever students end up getting a 720 on the math section of the SAT. Whenever one tutors students in high school, college undergraduates, and even college graduate-level students: and consistently gets 5 star ratings, incredibly great reviews, along with repeat business - even for subsequent courses. This isn't a scam. It's how diligent and determined and hard working tutors can make a great income; while helping out students across the entire country. 5 stars for Wyzant for such a great platform and opportunity. ZERO complaints from me.

I have worked with wyzant for several years and I disagree with the complainer. If he spent his time simply taking the damned quizzes, not only would he already be certified, it would have taken less time than his complaining! Also, teachers, no matter how qualified, aren't always good tutors, and vice-versa. Also, it is important to remember to be an entrepreneur and your own brand ambassador. I'm sure that since the math professor spent his career fiddling with numbers he probably didn't take many marketing classes, and is lacking in that skill set.

If I understand this complaint, it is "I signed up, no one engaged me as a tutor, therefore WyzAnt is corrupt."f

I think this post should be used as an example of the "special snowflake" syndrome in modern society.

"Everything bad that happens is someone else's fault, and they must pay!"

I have been a Wyzant tutor since April, 2014 and have worked for several other tutoring companies in the past. Wyzant is the BEST of the best. I get numerous students from them and on the occasional need to contact their customer service department, 99% of the time I am provided with EXCEPTIONAL service. It seems that the original complaint from a prospective tutor was based on the need to vent. I also question this person's knowledge of English grammar in that there were several mistakes. I understand that he is a mathematician, but there are surely times on needs command of English in teaching math!.

I'm sorry that you couldn't find any work on the site that has paid my bills for the past 4 years. I make a full-time living off of WyzAnt alone. It's not easy, there is a lot of work in the background trying to drum up business and chase down good clients. I had to start small and work my way up. I make like $30, 000 a year on WyzAnt. I'm not getting rich, but I'm making it work. Sorry that you had bad luck. If it makes you feel any better, I have a Masters in Education and I can't get a full-time teaching job. :)

I recently was rejected by Wyzant after they "determined that at this time, Wyzant is not the best platform for your tutoring services. Therefore, we are unable to provide you with a tutoring account." I have a Ph.D. I have been a university and high school tutor and instructor. I am out of work, and this seemed like the perfect fit to provide much needed income, and educate students to the best of my ability. Perplexed does not begin to describe what I felt when I read this. I now question their motives and standards.
