Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point review: Poor care and nursing

My experience at Bayonet Point Hospital was deeply troubling and, at times, unsafe. From arrival through post-surgery care, there were repeated failures in communication, attentiveness, and basic patient care.
Upon arrival, the woman who checked me in told me to “just go to triage” and did not show me where to go. In the ER, after receiving medication about 10 minutes after arrival, the nurse never returned to my room. I arrived at 8:00 a.m. and was not brought upstairs until approximately 3:00 p.m. The ER physician, however, was excellent—attentive, informative, and professional.
Pain management was consistently delayed. When I became upset and was speaking to my son on the phone, a nurse yelled at me and said, “That’s enough, just stop.” This was inappropriate and distressing.
On the inpatient unit, responsiveness was inconsistent. On one occasion, both my roommate and I rang the call bell repeatedly with no response. I ultimately had to call the hospital directly and request a supervisor just to get someone to come to the room.
On January 19th, after receiving pain medication, I noticed my IV was leaking. I reported this, and instead of assessing or replacing the IV, I was simply disconnected from fluids and told it could be addressed later when I went to surgery. Later that morning, despite being told I would go to surgery at 11:00 a.m., no one came until after 2:00 p.m. Repeated requests for an update were ignored. When I finally arrived in surgery, I was told the delay occurred because the wrong patient had been sent down and staff thought the previous patient was me.
There were also unprofessional comments made by a nurse’s aide, including calling my roommate “nice neighbor” and later muttering “anything else, your highness” under his breath as he left the room.
A particularly serious issue occurred when my blood sugar dropped to 57, and no action was taken at the time. Later, a day-shift nurse administered 50 cc of dextrose through an IV I had already told her was not functioning, resulting in full infiltration into my arm. When I reported this, I was dismissed and told I “didn’t know what I was talking about.” Another nurse later confirmed the IV had infiltrated and was no longer viable. After that confirmation, the nurse left and never returned.
Post-surgery, I repeatedly reported nausea—four times—without acknowledgment. I finally received medication well over an hour later.
What makes this more concerning is that this unit reportedly had only six patients across three rooms, yet basic care was still lacking. This does not appear to be solely a staffing issue.
It also took four days to definitively determine that I needed my gallbladder removed. My elderly roommate waited four days to learn she had compression fractures. A physician then told her she should go to a nursing home, causing her to cry. She is 90 years old, had been caring for herself independently, and was managing fine despite the lack of attentive nursing.
The one bright spot was a nurse named Mary, who was attentive, compassionate, and clearly dedicated to patient comfort and care.
I am a Doctor of Psychology and a former nuclear medicine technologist with ten years of hospital experience. I do not make these statements lightly. I have never encountered a hospital where patients were treated this dismissively and, at times, unsafely.
My overall experience was unacceptable. I would not recommend this hospital and would strongly encourage leadership to review patient safety practices, staff conduct, and accountability.
