PetSmart - Employee

I have been a long-time customer of PetSmart and I always shop at Tujunga PetSmart.

today at the cash register a new employee couldn't find me in the system by my phone number, and ask for my old number and I tried explaining to her that I am going there regularly every week to purchase my cat food or treats but she said she was not able to find me so I understood. After all she was a new employee and doesn't know how to work with system. After I paid for my cat food, I asked the manager to check my receipt and she saw that she miscounted the cans.
I had 22 items of cat food in my cart but she only counted 21. Now keep that in mind that I had to pay with my credit card, because I had no cash with me.
I want to know as a Customer Right was it right for the manager to take the food back after I paid for it already? Since it was the employees mistake? to wasn't that my right to take that extra can food home for free? I mean seriously she made me feel so bad after I asked to check my receipt. Instead of apologizing and saying that thank you for pointing that out to us. we will make sure that won't happen again and you can take that extra can food for free it was our fault... she insisted on me to pay for the extra one and after words that I told her I'm not going to charge on my credit card just for one can of food. so, she said that's not how it works so she took the food back from my cart! how rude!
I came out very unhappy with the service! what happened to customer rights and after all I am always being asked to donate at the register for the animals and pay extra and donate too most of the times. Now I am asking you this that pet smart couldn't afford to give me one extra can of cat food for free!?
I want to make sure Pet smart knows their employees and I was very unhappy and unsatisfied with the manager of PetSmart in Tujunga today.
I was absolutely humiliated front of other customers!
