For a period of time I joined multiple survey sites to earn a bit of extra spending money. I found Toluna unsavoury and possibly unethical in numerous ways. Compared to other survey sites, their payouts were pathetic. You had to spend significantly more time doings surveys with Toluna in comparison to others to earn the same amount, which of course was well below minimum wage in most places. But where I found them outright unethical is that they would often have you do what felt like 99% of a survey (we're talking 15 or 20 minutes worth sometimes) when suddenly they'd disqualify you. Sometimes you'd suddenly get a message suggesting they met their quota for that survey, sometime no explanation at all. Which means they possibly collected a significant amount of data from me while refusing to give me any points, when there was already minimal return in investment. I never had that issue with most other survey sites, which would disqualify you quickly if you weren't their target population, and would let you finish once you qualified. One of Toluna's more unique features was a discussion board. I realized it was a sneaky way for them to get data without having to pay anyone for it. But it was something to do when bored. Notably, they would often delete threads where people tried to discuss such things as Toluna's practices of cutting people off without points after essentially completing surveys. At one point I started getting harassed by another member via the discussion boards who was openly racist. When I reported that, they ignored my complaints at first until I pointed out that same guy had been posting about how he lies on some surveys in order to ensure he qualified. Instead of just deleting that person's account, Toluna arbitrarily deleted mine as well. I tried appealing that, but they rejected the appeal with zero reason given. Although I had already earned enough points for a $20 payout, they also refused to honour that. This means they literally stole $20 I had finished earning. But. hey, who's going to sue them or go after them for that? Oddly, after they deleted my account they continued to send me invites to do surveys for a while. The first time that happened I thought maybe they had reconsidered their draconian actions, but as soon as I completed the survey I received a message stating that I did not qualify for points because I did not have an account. From what I could tell, they had let me complete the survey regardless, and recorded the outcome. And I continued to receive invites until I blocked them. But those eventually stopped. The problem with businesses like this is that many who join them are that little bit desperate for extra cash, which makes them easy to exploit.
