On Monday November 21, 2022, I was driving home from a hunting trip. When I left the house 5 days earlier, my dog Rico seemed in good health.

Saturday November 19, 2022, a couple days after I left my wife called saying the dogs was seriously ill and could not use his legs correctly. We agreed to keep him as comfortable as possible until I returned home.

This situation deteriorated further on Sunday and decided to have our son take him to Green Prairie on Monday afternoon as soon as they could see him.

Upon arrival at the clinic, my son was asked to provide a $400 payment up front BEFORE the vet would even diagnose the dog. My son called me for approval to write a check for this amount. I was confused as to why we had to pay money in order to even be examined.

After some additional phone calls between the clinic and myself and not knowing how sick the dog actually was, I had agreed to euthanize and cremate the dog and gave them verbal confirmation. I instructed my son to add this charge to the $400 for a total of $680.

At this time, they need my wife verbal permission to euthanize the dog so I called and told her that see needed to call them and how upset I was that they extorted a $400 payment before they would even examine the dog. This did not sit well with her, so she drove to the clinic.

Upon arrival they had a diagnosed the dog with diabetes and a written estimate of additional treatment. This treatment was a total of $2600 and again wanted payment up front before any treatment would be provided, another extortion attempt. My wife found this to be a ludicrous approach to the problem and just asked the vet to provide medicine and she would treat him at home, she is a registered nurse. At this time the vet refused to provide any prescriptions unless her treatment plan was paid up front and executed by her. My wife gave them some choice words and took the dog home.

The following day a different vet clinic saved the dog's life for a total of $623, to be paid the following day after their 24-hour care. I find it a moral and ethical disgrace that a vet clinic can withhold treatment of any kind in lieu of immediate payment in such times of duress.

Yesterday I discovered that the clinic had deposited the check for $680 that included euthanize services that were not provided, this was wrong and unauthorized. I could have settled with them properly in the following days.

I stopped in today to complain about the entire handling of these events, and they said they mailed the $280 back to us. This should not have been handled this way either.

I could not image taking my car to the repair shop and them demanding money from me before they examine the vehicle, this is no different.

In my opinion, this clinic if working aggressively to extort money from clients that are in emotional distress, and they are morally and ethically bankrupt.

Desired outcome: I am not sure what can be done, but a letter of unethical business practice in the local paper, BBB website etc. with a cc to the clinic would be nice.
