Payphone call using credit card
On 4/5/202, I was stuck in San Diego, CA with no transportation, no phone, no cash or change. As a female, alone at night, there was some urgency to get a phone call out to my boyfriend to let him know that I was by myself, in a city I wasn't familiar with, and was going to yry to make it home (approximately 45 miles away) using public transportation. Since it was late and the last scheduled busses and trains were approaching quickly, I was concerned about not finding someone to let me borrow their cell phone in time. That's when I spotted the payphone at the transit center and saw that there was an option to place a call using my credit card. I could not find any explanation of charges written on or near the phone, but I recalled the last time I used a payphone, I had change and only needed about 5 quarters to make and complete the call., I figured it was worth the reduced stress of just getting that phone call out quickly. At no point in making the call and providing my credit card info was there ANY explanation of charges that would be placed on the card. Figuring it would likely be on the order of $1-$3, I made a mental note of the likely charge and the remaining balance on my debit card, as I was very strapped for money and carefully "counting pennies." Unfortunately, the call went straight to voicemail, so I was only able to leave a brief message and then hung up the phone and went on my way to catch the bus. I did make it home that night by the skin of my teeth and I had calculated that I had about $30 left in my account, which was all the money I had to my name.
The next morning, I went to the convenient store to get somethingsnall to eat for breakfast and was stunned to find that I only had $2 left in my account. I assumed my boyfriend carelessly spent that money wothout telling me and was furious at him until I looked at my transaction history and found that I was charged $28 for that payphone call that wasn't even answered! I immediately called this company listed on the transaction as CUSTOM TELECONNECT. I spoke with a representative who assured me that this was a temporary hold and that money would be returned within 3-5 business days when the actual charge would be finalized. Still pissed off that it would take so long, I was at least relieved to find out the money would be returned. That relief quickly turned into disbelief and anger again when the hold time was past and the finalized charge was still $21.01 (see transaction details pasted below)! Again, I'm stuck with pennies in the bank and unable to eat food that day. I called again and spoke with a representative that let me know she didn't like my attitude. She then stated quickly, "Well there's a minimum $20... well... uh... I'm not customer service, so I'll have to transfer you to that department..." click... she transfered me to nothing but a "beep" with no customer service on the other end. I've tried calling back several times and have been unable to get through to customer service to resolve this charge.
This should absolutely be illegal! Not only is this company placing an outrageously high minimum charge for a payphone call, but they are praying on people that are already in need and clearly down on their luck, hence not having a cell phone to use. In addition, there was absolutely no forwarning of the charges that would be incurred AND it is very difficult (if even possible at all) to get the charges reimbursed. Please do something about this! I am shocked that in this day and age, this type of THEFT is still occurring. Please Also help me get my $20 back. I literally have no money for food now because of this. Please help stop these criminals!

On 11/07/22 I made a 2 minute phone call from a payphone at San Diego Balboa trolley station because I didn't have any quarters and was charged $21...outrageous!

I accepted collect call from brother. Company did not disclose fee for accepting collect call. Fee is about $87 a hour. Company does not disclose because consumers would not accept fee. These fees are unacceptable, most of the people that accept collect calls are lower income people, and this company takes advatage of them. On September 23, 2010 on a trip to Montana we stayed unexpectedly at a Inn that did not have cell service. Since my sister was in critical condition back in NY I was forced to use the pay phone with collect call service.
When I returned home I received the bill for $33.35 from Custom Teleconnect, Inc. (CTI). The call was no longer than 3-4 minutes for conversation. Thinking it had to be a mistake I wrote to the company. Since my letter was not answered one month later, I sent a second letter and after 7 weeks received a reply. The Chief of Operations provided me a dissertation of how collect calls work and suggested that I purchase a prepaid phone card in the future to avoid collect calls. She also provided me with the courtesy of blocking any billing numbers in the future from calls in the CTI network. I found the blocking of calls quite hilarious since when I get through with the story of this call through CTI none of my relatives, friends, of mere acquaintances would be so inclined to use their service.
Reading other complaints on this website I am surprised that this can continue. The CTI representative calls it a bona fide charge; however, a SCAM is a SCAM is a SCAM no matter how you color it.

I was locked out of my house this week, without a cell phone, or my wallet. I drove around searching for a payphone (not an easy task these days). I finally found one at Safeway. My coins did not work — just kept falling through — so I used my credit card (which I know by heart). I made 3 calls for help without even talking to anyone (only left messages). I checked my account today and was utterly shocked to find a $69 charge on my card! Are you kidding me? 23 dollars a call?!
I agree with what others have said here — this company should not be allowed to be in business. They are preying on people's misfortune. After all, who uses payphones anymore, unless it's for an emergency? What a racket. I am filing a complaint against them and will also talk to Safeway about discontinuing using them as their payphone service provider.

July 25, 2010-custom teleconnect in las vegas is a scam and everyone should know this!
My son called me collect from a payphone in kansas city, mo, I had not heard from him all night so of course I was worried about him, I received a collect call on my cell phone stating it needed a credit card to allow the call to go thru. After about 4-5 times of trying to enter my card info and being hung up and called back the call finally did go through. I spoke to my son initially the first time for 3min and then our call was disconnected, my son had to call me back and again I had to enter my credit card info to allow the call through, that time I spoke with him for about 6mins total. Mind you there was never a recording of how much the charges would be or anything! On 7/28/10, I was checking my account online and found there were 3 charges from custom teleconnect. 2 of them were dated on 7/25 for $20.41 each, and then there was 1 charge for 7/27 $48.61! Needless to say I was pissed off, I contacted the teleconnect and spoke to a lead supervisor lena smith, id 3100, from texas who advised me that the $20.41 charges were credit card verification charges and that the actual charges for the calls were $48.61! I can not believe that it costs that much! She says that this is all legal with the fcc and the puc in my state, I find it hard to believe and plan to make everyone aware of this company and their scam of charges so that no one else is a victim.

My son called me collect from Santa Rosa from a phone located at the Santa Rosa Detention center. When he made the calls (2) there was no indication how much the call would cost. We only spoke for a few minutes. Later when I checked my bank account I found two charges $28.00 pending on my account. Now I see a charge for $52.04. How can that be? I think this is unacceptable to goug people, to take advantage of the circumstances.
I had the same experience. I left a message on a phone and they charded me 31.88. They should have told you the charges before hand. I have contacted the BBB about this issue.

This is sooo true! I was at the fashion show mall in las vegas when my phone died and i had to call my wife. I left a message for just about 30 seconds using my credit card. When I checked my balance, the call cost me $20, and on the next day, a $28 additional charge on credit card without me using it at all. I dont get it! ths is really a scam. When I called the company, nobody answered me except a voice mail. I dont want to leave a message, i want to talk to the management. They have to stop this!

These are the charges that I received for a single collect phone call from my daughter who is in treatment. I was given no information as to how much I was going to be charged for the call so that I could decide whether to accept it or not. Avoid these people at all costs. The recording said .65 cents for the first minute (I had to listen to it 4 times to understand it) and .40 cents a minute there after. The call was 5 minutes. Then a charge for 28.00 showed up and a second one for 30.00. Then, they deleted once charge and added yet a third. I had anticipated fraud and had used a card that I first set at a balance of 24.00. Somehow they got the number of another card of mine and eventually dropped the charge for 30.00 and just pushed through the charge for 28.00. Its a VISA debit card and I'm calling them to dispute the charge. Most card companies side with the consumer most of the time. And, so I'm expecting the charge to be reversed. Go to Google and type in Custom Telecom Inc. Las Vegas complaints and you'll find lots of people reporting this kind of thing. The card companies need to ban charges from them. They seem to use 2 names, the second one being Custom Teleconnet Inc. Las Vegas. So, run that name in Google with the word complaints too. Usually, a merchant processor will drop a company with a bunch of "charge backs". So, keep up the complaints to your card company. These people are a menace to the community.
I just got a collect call yesterday from my sons father less than 50 miles away. We were on the phone for less than a minute (I called him back) they charged me $21.84!
Fraudulent Billing
My brother-in-law is permanently in a wheelchair, suffers from cerebral palsy and lives ina private room in an assisted living home. His speech is unintellgible to anyone except family and friends who know him very well. He is currently on Universal Lifeline and seldom uses the phone. Custom Teleconnect put through a total charge of $26.34 for a 3 minute collect call from a pay phone in Gardena. After 15 minutes of going over the same information with Enzo (agent ID [protected]) at Zero Plus Dialing, she agreed that she would issue a credit that would take 2 or 3 billing cycles to go through. I asked her repeatedly the total amount of the credit and she repeated $22.25 (the amount of the call) plus taxes and fees. After pressure, she stated that $26.34 would be refunded.
I intend to call AT&T later today to put a block on collect calls and third party calls on this number and advise that this amount will not be paid.

It just came to my notice as of today 01/01/2010 that the above named company charged my chase card when i never authorized the charges, the total amount chargedto my card is $124.68, now my bank is going charge me fur unsufficient fund for the checks i wrote, and i expect them to pay those fees also, because i won't hold back taking this to the FBI.

I just got released from the columbiana county jail and was calling around trying to get a ride back home. I made 2 phone calls from this pay phone at 12 mins and 14 mins. The pay-phone never told me once on how much the calls were. So they take out $80 dollars from my girlfriends card. WTF..! Are you serious.?!?! If i would of known that I never would of called from that ###ed Custom Teleconnect phone. Never again will I and anybody I know. I can't believe you ***holes would do that.!

I agree that this company is the biggest rip off I ever seen. My son is in a correctional institution and made two collect calls using
this company and which I am assuming the state gets a kick back from. But, the one call did not even go through and I was

I made a phone call at a pay phone on Sept. 9th using my debit card. I checked my online checking account and had been charged 20.00 for the call even though I only talked about 4 or 5 min. A few days later I was online checking my account and the charge for $20.00 was gone and a new charge was on it. This call was made Sept. 12th and was for $70.80 . Then I checked on line and found out all the scams this company had made.

Fraudulent charges
Made a call using my debit call to my mom when night time rates applied on 03/03/21009. Call lasted less than 5 min. When I arrived at home I checked my account on-line and a charge for $20.00 was placed against my card. On 03/04/2009 my card was charged another $13.45 making the total charge of $33.45 for a call lasting less than 5 minutes. If they think I am going to pay that, the C.E.O. needs to admit himself/herself to a treatment facility. My bank has been alerted and is disputing these charges. If the company refuses to reduce the amount my bank is refund this amount to my account, then challenge this in court on my behalf. Thank God for Bank of America and their willingness to support their customers.

I have been receiving several calls a day from this number [protected] wanting to charge me for an inmate call. Name of the inmate is "ED". I know of no jail or prison that allows up to ten collect calls per day, and I have no idea who Ed is. The voice of the inmate is recorded, the voice is muffled and exact with every call. When I do not give credit card information I immediately receive a text with the number [protected] which is custom teleconnect customer service. I think there may be more to this company than just ripping people off through overcharging.

On 11/07/2014, I made a call from the Red Line's Westlake Subway station here in Los Angeles. The call lasted about 2 min. On the phone it said calls were 25 cents per min. Upon checking my bank statement tonight found that Custom Teleconnect billed the call at $28.16. Called the bank tried to stop the payment, but the bank said I had to wait until it posted, then lodge a dispute against the company. This totally wrong, and will be reporting them to the FCC, and the BBB. Something needs to be done about the fraudulent practices of the company. I wonder if I can take them to small claims court.

September 2010, my phone bill shows two charges for collect calls and miscellaneous charges equalling $72.93. We never accepted a collect call! The customer service said I used the service. Then I demanded to speak with the supervisor. The customer service rep came to the line saying that the supervisor was on another call but they would give me a 40% discount for these collect charges. Pay for fraud? What insanity! Also, the rep said she was not allowed to give me the supervisors name! I called again and they offered a 70% discount! Pay for fraud on sale?!?

Please investigate the telephone company, Custom Teleconnect as well as ZPDI. I believe they are operating under fraudulent practices and are possibly partners in a scheme.
Custom Teleconnect apparently has control over various phone system areas that services the “collect call” market. ZPDI does their “billing”. They are stealing people’s hard earned money by billing them for “attempted”, collect calls that were not accepted. It then becomes the customer’s responsibility to get the charges dismissed. Meanwhile, the phone company requires payment to continue services until the matter is resolved. It should not function in that manner. The call should first be accepted formally by the receiver then charges should follow. I am not going to waste my time listening to their menu of options, to push a specific button of their choosing to appease them.
Phone numbers are able to be blocked but there is only a limited amount of numbers that one can block on their own phone. Institutions such as jails can be blocked but I am not sure about them blocking whole city or regional areas. Even so, I should not have to block off a whole area to prevent unwanted calls from one person. I should be able to leave my lines of communication open, for that one emergency collect call that I might have to accept.
This company is preying on all the busy hardworking people in hopes they do not monitor their bills. Practices such as this are unethical and the company should be reprimanded and forced to change their policy. I am sure technology is such, that an accepted collect call can be categorized in a different manner than one that is not accepted.

I was at the eye doctor to get a check-up. Used the pay phone which was through Custom Teleconnect. I wasn't even on the phone 2 minutes and I was charged twenty bucks and didn't know until I checked my credit card statement. I was shocked and angry at the same time. Charges happen...I am from Texas and hell when you go to the gas pump the pay at the pump service makes a pre-authorization for X amount of dollars...not knowing does suck...but many companies want to make sure your card IS LEGIT & so on...people who complain have nothing else better to do in their lives in my opinion...I researched Custom TeleConnect and they have been around since Oct. of 1993, so apparently they are NOT SCAMMERS HELLO! I used a payphone in Austin, TX today because my cellphone had died. The phone would not accept quarters so I was forced to use my credit card. When I got home, I checked my account balance, and saw that they had charged me $20.00 for a 1.5 minute phone call. This is absurd.
I feel that the BBB should be notified of their scam, as they do not give you the option of finding out how much their services are prior to entering your credit card information.
Portland Oregon - Made a local phone call that lasted 2 and a hlaf minutes using my credit card from a pay phone in the Rose Quarter. I recieved a $30.31 charge from this company that is contracted by the pay phone owners. The City of Portland should be made aware of the borderline criminal behavior of this company. It is unacceptable for us to allow these sort of companies to pray on our communities in America. Please let someone know if you have been affected by this company. The only way we can stop predatory practices by greedy corperations such as these is to say something about it and make your voice heard.
The same thing happened to me only I was charged a second time for 15.22 as if I had made another call when I wasn't even there. This service is a complete ripoff!
Fraudulent Phone Bill
A "collect" call billed as a third party on my regular phone service amounting to $125.00. Never received such a call - explained to no avail to customer service rep.
Asked her if it came in to answering machine or voice mail is it possible it could have gone through?Was told they have record of a 60 minute call and that charges were legal. When I called the number, it range and then went into fax mode. Custom Teleconnect said it was a phone booth? After several arguments, was eventually credited $50. Will further dispute the $75 balance with my own carrier!
The same thing happened to my business. The two calls came in after hours at 9:18 pm and 9:22pm. The answering machine picked up and recorded part of the call, which said " .. if you DO NOT wish to accept the call, press 3 now. Of course no one was here to press three, so it appeared that the call was accepted. Each call was 3 minutes at $6.00 per minute. What a scam! So we can no longer have an answering machine turned on. I will file a complaint with the proper authorities.
