I sadly report facing a personal attack from my workplace. I have been working at the Popeye’s Lousiana Kitchen, St. Mary’s Road, Winnipeg, Canada since last October. I am a student at UofM, and it is a very hard part time job for any student. But I never looked for another job, because I knew Popeyes did significant effort to train me, and I never wanted to give them a hard time. Since summer started, a lot of the employees asked for full time work. And I believe to give them enough hours, they’re cutting hours from us part-timers and giving them hours. They started lowering my work hours from 19 to 14, then to 12, 11 and this week I only got 8 hours of work, and excluding the break, it’s only 7.5 hours. When I asked them, they said the buisness is not going well, so they can’t give us enough hours. They even told me to look for other jobs. But this is not fair. When the buisness is good, we don’t get paid extra, or get more hours. Then, why should we suffer if the buisness is not going good? They didn’t give me any advanced notice and they just lowered my hours. Finding another job takes time, and specially right now in summer, where everyone is working full time, it’s very hard to find another job. Their aren’t many Bangladeshi employee in batter fry. Me and another employee Muntaha Misbah are getting less hours where everyone else is getting proper hours. I believe it is a discrimination for employee from different nationality. And I never expected this from a reputable organization like this. Going like this, I have got a huge debt on my shoulders. I can barely pay my rent. My father is also going through a financial crisis trying to pay my tuition. Please do something. I don’t want the Human Rights commission to do anything with my workplace’s reputation.
