Bristol West Insurance review: Crooked insurance company w horrible customer service

My auto insurance policy was from 10/05/24 - 04/05/25 and the new policy beginning 04/06/25 was going to be twice the previous rate so I found better insurance, cancelled on 03/27/25 which required proof of replacement insurance and the online portal for Bristol West told me I would be getting a refund for early cancellation, said nothing about any penalties for early cancellation. On 5/19/25 I get a final notice before sending to collections stating that I owe $29.96 which made no sense, when I logged into Bristol West it said my balance was $0.00 and that my policy was cancelled. I called BW support and they said "you don't owe anything your balance is zero" but when I told them I got a bill in the mail they went and found another policy number attached to my name (I only had one policy) and they said "you owe because you cancelled early, if you waited 10 days to cancel there would be no fee". I was never notified of any cancellation fee before or during the cancellation process, I let them know that the fee was not disclosed otherwise any person would just wait for the policy to expire. I understand the concept of an early cancellation fee, if someone wanted to cancel their term months before it expired but I was cancelling a week before expiration because I didn't want to be automatically charged with a renewal fee and not only was I not informed of a cancellation fee I was told I would get a refund if I went ahead and cancelled early, complete bait and switch. Customer service did not help at all, would not waive an unjust penalty fee, I asked for proof of having this fee displayed somewhere or on something I signed and customer service told me they didn't have to disloce the fee because it's California law, when I asked for the statute they were referring to they made up a number, I kept them on the phone while I searched for that statute, it did not exist, customer service said oh well we aren't going to send you any documentation about the fee but you still owe it even though you paid for more time than you were covered.
