Apex Paramedics Billing? What Bill?

Provided transportation service for my daughter from urgent care to residential care. My insurance covered a portion which we received a check. NEVER received a bill from APEX other than messages on our cell phone to call them while we worked during the day. Finally got a hold of billing, they indicated they sent several notices...not true, still never received a bill. Told the lady to send a bill and we will pay. Finally got my FIRST bill with the declaimer we have 30 days to pay before collections and its past due. Now trying to call to pay them since I have a bill in hand and it's impossible to get a hold of their billing department. Just bad business practices...

Desired outcome: Send out an actual bill and people will pay you.

Apex Paramedics Initial contact is one day before they plan on sending the invoice to collections....

My mother was transported by this company back in January 2021. She has severe dementia and is a care facility. Today, June 18th, I received a call that the invoice for the services was going to collections on Monday June 21st. This was the very first I had heard that there was an open invoice. They stated all the invoices had been sent to her care facility - - and could not send me a copy of the invoice for payment - - they expected a payment via credit card with nothing other than their verbal threat of sending the invoice to collections in less than one business day.

I fully understand them needing to be paid for services they have rendered - - but to call a family member one day before going to collections is just unethical. At first they said they were a 3rd party processing company and had no control over when the invoice was sent to collections. Later they admitted they are not a 3rd party that they are in fact employees of Apex Paramedics but they still would not delay sending the invoice to collections in less than one business day.

Desired outcome: Time to at least receive an invoice and review the charges....not to provide my CC via the initial phone contact with no information other than their threats of sending to collections

Apex Paramedics dishonest billing

Apex Paramedics has a dishonest and exploitative approach in their billing department! for example:

1. Apex claimed Medicare rejected the claim for ambulance service, but Medicare has no record of the claim ever being submitted (they have a system to track all clams, whether paid or not).
2. Apex claimed Medicare doesn’t allow for provider discounts of more than 50%, but multiple medicare reps verified that they have no such rule. Providers are free to discount bills without limits (many providers reduced my other medical bills far more than that).
3. Apex claimed that Medicare would pay more than $439 for the ambulance but a review of Medicare payment schedules shows that they would only pay about $295 (and NOT the original bill of $920 or the inflated $460 Apex is demanding from me now.
4. The ambulance people were supposed to ask about my insurance coverage and provide what’s called a ABN form (Advance Beneficiary Notice of Non-coverage) for Medicare, and they are supposed to explain that Medicare might not pay for the ambulance. I recall no such discussion or form.
5. I asked Apex for copies of the bill they claim they submitted to Medicare, copies of the Medicare rules prohibiting discounts over 50%, a copy of their claimed Medicare estimate of $439.02 cost, and a copy of the ABN.

After lying to me for weeks, Apex has refused to provide any copies of those requested documents, consistently acting in bad faith. This is how they treat people with serious illness. They are willing to exploit sick people for money!

I wanted to add some other complaints I found. What I went through is clearly part of a pattern. I think you'll agree, these people abuse and exploit sick people and patients for money:
From Corie K. (1 month ago):
The paramedics were very personable and professional. The administration staff are the absolute [censor] of the Earth. I had transport from the ER to the hospital for stroke symptoms and they are refusing to code it as an emergency so my insurance won't pay for it. Even Aetna staff who have seen everything have called this appalling. One representative said that in her 18 years working in this industry she'd never heard anything like it. Their staff yelled at and hung up on me. I'd say avoid at all costs, but when you need an ambulance you aren't in a position to find an honest business. I know I wasn't.

From Roger C. (5 months ago):
Of the Apex Paramedics staff that I met in the 4 mile ($400/mile) ambulance ride, I give them high marks. However the back office and ownership staff are like any other paramedics. They don't accept insurance payments and absolutely refuse to reduce any portion of the bill for any reason. I did not have a choice of paramedics and forced to pay what they demanded. They are [censor] that feed off the people that can least afford to pay.
