Crunch Fitness - Cancellation fee charge - please be alert

I used to be a crunch fitness member (#xxxxx99877) at reston va location, and froze my account in 2019 due to lack of use of their facilities as I have a home gym in my building. They charged me an annual fee each year which I was ok with in january 2020 as I technically used it in 2019 and wanted to cancel after that after my business trip in early 2020. But then covid hit. Their gym is closed and you can't cancel your membership nor use the gym. Thinking they will be like the other companies and waive you an annual fee due to covid? Wrong! They will charge you no matter what. So when in january 2021 I got a call from abc financial company, to update my payment information for crunch fitness, I am really surprised they are still asking for my payment since I haven't been back for almost 2 years and not in contract binding (one year contract), and want to charge me for a fee. What kind of services have they provided to deserve a fee? Isn't a fee is a service they have provided? Anyways, so I called the bank and wants to cancel my membership, only to find that to do that, they have to unfreeze my account first, which will leave me "active" for a month, which I have to pay $39.99 for, and then cancel my membership. I explained that I don't want to be active and that's the whole reason I have my account frozen, the person said sorry that's the only way for them to cancel a frozen account. Isn't this policy written in the way to scam people, so they can get free money from you? How is it different from stealing, by taking money from people who don't want to be paid while no services are provided to them? I asked for them to provide me with the contract terms that allows them to do that, which they said they have to get a manager's approval and send to me in 5 business days. I don't understand why they can't send me something electronically sooner than that especially no one is using their gym anyways. I understand it's hard to run a gym business during the pandemic but this is not the way to make money. I hope they close. I will never go back again. If this is all it takes to get rid of them forever, I am willing to pay, but I will change my credit card after, in case they will charge me after.

Desired outcome: Refund
