RDU Airport Lack of parking security

There is no security at the RDU parking structure.

The evening of 6/18/2012 I returned from a trip, paid my $12/day for parking in the parking garage located between the 2 terminals. I found that I had a dead battery. I went to the "Assistance" phone...I pressed the button for 30 minutes with NO RESPONSE. Finally, a good Samaritan gave me a jump. When I went to leave, I was told quite rudely that I owed another $2. "For what?" I was delayed because there was no response to the "Assistance" phone. "How many did you try?" I said, " A couple." Bob said, "Well if you didn't try all of them in the structure, then it's not our fault...$2." I objected and told him I wasn't going to pay the $2 and he could call the police, if he liked. He did. A young officer arrived and I told him the story. He said that the parking garage doesn't monitor the "Assistance" phone, that it was the airport police. I asked why no one answered. He said they are too short handed and besides they don't offer any motorist assistance (neither does the parking facility even though they charge $12/day). I asked what would a person in trouble do? He ignored the question because their are security cameras that will help catch someone after the crime is committed. I said, "I bet Homeland Security isn't thrilled that there isn't security in the parking structure." The response from the officer was, "They don't care about the parking structure, just people getting on planes." OH, REALLY! I was told to pay the $2 by the officer. Well, bad guys, you can do whatever crimes you want in the RDU parking structure. Just cover your face from the cameras and you're home free!

There is NO Video Surveillance in the RDU Parking decks.. I know as I had my car hit while it was parked in L2, and when I went to the RDU police, they were of no help. $1200 worth of damage plus parking Fee's. (this was bout may 2012 time-frame...)

RDU Airport Horrendous Transportation Security

My fiancee and I drove 2 hours to the airport last night with one of his friends to go pick up one of their fellow marines. We went to terminal 1 where he was going to be and left the car outside for only a moment so we could go find his friend. Baggage claim was taking awhile so we went outside to move the car up. When we got outside a security employee shouted, "Is this your vehicle?" I told him that yes, it was. He said, "Well you left it unattended, I want it out of here right now." I said ok, but we were waiting for someone and where were we supposed to park. I got the response, "Get it out of here now or I'll slap a 50 dollar ticket on it." "Great." I said agitatedly and moved the car while my fiancee went inside to help his friend with the bags. I couldn't believe how rude this person was being for no apparent reason. I had moved the car as instructed and still his rudeness persisted. As soon as my fiancee disappeared inside, the man walked over to me again. I had pulled behind a minivan who was also waiting. He said, "Ma'am, I'm not going to tell you again to get that car out of here!" I said, "What? I'm waiting on someone to come out with their bags. I don't know where to go around here and I don't have a phone to tell everyone where I'm going." He replied, "Well you aren't going to sit here. Drive around the airport, I don't care." Mortified, I drove off and circled around again. This time when I tried to stop and look inside for my fiancee and his friends, the same guy motioned for me to keep driving. What I didn't understand is that I saw other people sitting there waiting in their vehicles. About the fourth time of driving through he motioned for me to stop and park where the other vehicles were. My fiancee and his friends had been waiting outside right before i drove up and had asked the man where i was. They could not understand what he had done either and when asked why, he responded to them as rudely as he had to me. I take offense to the fact that my fiancee and other marines risk their lives fighting for the freedom of this country and they get treated like total crap. The man told me (condescendingly) that his name was Rodger White, and that he would be glad for me to go talk to his supervisor. I don't know why, I mean, are they ok with the security personnel being excessively rude and unaccomodating to customers? Apparently so. In my opinion he needs to be suspended or fired for such behavior. Overall, RDU made my night into a nightmare.

You both got out of the car and went into baggage claim and left a car UNATTENDED curbside? WHAT were you thinking?! There are signs everywhere telling you not to leave a car unattended! - every few feet curbside... In this day when the threat level is at orange, we are lucky to even be able to park curbside at RDU - never leave a car unattended at an airport! The TCO officer would have been agreeable if one of you had stayed in the car. Think about it from the Airport's angle...a car unattended could have a bomb or anything in it endangering a large amount of lives. AND there are plenty of signs on the way into the airport indicating where parking is - and it's right between the two terminals...not even 100 yards from where you needed to pick up your friend. And RDU is set up as a loop; which you learned when you went around. The fact that your friend is a Marine has nothing to do with it; who's going to know that? And he was not the one who broke the law. You're lucky you didn't get a $50 ticket.
