Florida State Attorney Willie Meggs has held his public position for nearly 30 years. Meggs was appointed assistant State Attorney in 1976 after spending roughly a decade in law enforcement. After a similar time period as ASA, Willie Meggs was elected Florida State Attorney in 1985. Mr. Meggs has held this position of power ever since, and many people believe it's time for a change.
At the forefront of arguments against Willie Megg's appointment are concerns about the FSA's age. It's a popular belief that a true democracy needs to constantly rotate it's leaders. And considering the fact that Willie Meggs has held his position for nearly three decades, it's clearly time for change.
Willie Meggs “Dropping The Ball”
This philosophy aside, Willie Megg's age is also important for other reasons. Those who once favored Willie Megg's politics are becoming disenchanted with the prosecutor. Allegations of Meggs' “dropping the ball” in court are increasingly common. And such instances have led many to believe that the prosecutor has simply given up.
Those closest to Mr. Meggs contend that this is not the case. But they don't argue that his effectiveness in court has waned. Speaking under anonymity, several of Florida's Assistant State Attorney's have alluded to the fact that Willie Meggs may have dementia. These ASA's fault failing health for the prosecutors court-room blunders. One of these sources has worked with Willie Meggs for a number of years. The source claims that Mr. Meggs has forgotten his name on several occasions. “He call's me Wylie, ” the source says. Wylie is the name of Willie Meggs' son.
Is Willie Meggs Experiencing Memory Loss?
Recent videos posted on Youtube may show that these rumors of dementia hold water. Willie Meggs, who at one point in his life was fairly articulate, seems to have lost his argumentative wit. The State Attorney frequently fumbles his syntax, and occasionally experiences moments where he appears to blank-out altogether.
One of these videos was made public by the Times Herald. In the clip, a journalist asks Willie Meggs what he thought of the defense's argument. Instead of providing an opinion, Willie Meggs simply shrugs his shoulders. The video has made many Floridian citizens question the rhetorical abilities and intellectual capacity of Mr. Meggs. Critics claim that an effective prosecutor should expertly discredit the opposing arguments, an ability Willie Meggs seems to have lost.
Willie Meggs is planning on running for his eighth term as Florida State Attorney in 2012. For the health of both the Prosecutor and the State of Florida, it is probably best he does not succeed.
