My lock was physically removed from my storage unit and my travel bag with golf clubs was stolen. It was only discovered when I revisited the unit and found that U-haul had placed a new lock on my door. I was never notified by U-haul that they had discovered a rented unit with no lock, nor that they had placed a new lock on my door.
I was told by U-haul management to file a claim with Rep West and it would be handled.
I filed the claim and included all info on missing items and approximate values, only including the exact items that I was completely certain had been stolen. Approximate value of everything was around $600.00.
I spent a lot of time researching the current value of the items and making sure I was not overvaluing my loss.
Rep West had me file a police report and I followed through with that process and passed along the information.
Rep West notified me that they had denied the claim due to their investigation not revealing "any signs of forced entry into your storage unit". They also stated that renters are not protected from "loss resulting from mysterious disappearance, intentional or criminal acts"
I am confused as to how physically removing a lock is not considered forced entry. I am also confused as to how the insurance coverage I paid for doesn't cover "mysterious criminal acts".
The police detective has noted that U-haul management has not assisted at all in the investigation. The video can't be reviewed because there was such a long gap in between my visits to know exactly when someone would have removed the lock and the items.
U-haul management has told me on multiple occasions that "this is why you purchase the insurance and that Rep West should be responsible for your compensation."
Both companies seem to blame the other...and there is no cooperation with the local police investigation. Meanwhile, I have to replace the stolen items. I would certainly appreciate better answers from both parties regarding the case and why the claim was denied.
