Dog Breeder - Breeding Dogs Knowingly with Hereditary Heart Defects
I received a full bred Labrador Retriever from Our Lovable Labs, in Canon GA. I searched high and low for the most reputable breeder to purchase a puppy from, since that was our decision vs getting a rescue (for various reasons, so please don't judge). Our Lovable Labs has a great reputation, from what I could tell, but there was so little information except a few comments on their facebook page, which has now been removed because I put my neutral feedback on it. Neutral was generous.
About 4 weeks after receiving the puppy from Our Lovable Labs, we had an odd incident where the puppy fainted. The puppy had all regular vet checks. He was fine by the afternoon, but I took him to the vet anyways. At that vet appointment, the vet noticed a heart murmur. We had it rechecked 2 weeks later and it was worse. An x-ray showed the heart was enlarged. A subsequent echo-cardiogram showed a severe, life shortening, congenital heart defect called Tricuspid Valve Dislplaysia. I provided the echo-cardiogram reports to Our Lovable Labs. Since I provided that information to the breeder, they chose to breed the same mom and dad. In addition, they are now offering breeding rights for a significant fee in addition to the $2500 for the puppy. Our Lovable Labs handled my situation correctly by refunding the money - but for any future purchases, may I suggest you should request an echo-cardiogram to be certain there is no issue and anyone who has puppies by that mom or dad (Evie or Thunder) should request special screening from their vet. These dogs, if a heart issue is present, need to be on medication to sustain a quality of life. I had only wished I could find a review in advance when I was searching for a reputable breeder. The breeder did the appropriate thing by refunding our payment (but, ** to receive a health guarantee, you need to buy the specific dog food they request and provide through mail order**). Our family is very attached to a dog that has a severe heart issue and has a life expectancy of 1-3 years. We picked him and he is our responsibility though another puppy was offered in exchange. Just wanting to provide the next family with information I wished I had before I bought. These puppies and the breeder's dogs have amazing temperaments, but their health should be questioned. Also, ask to see the litters completely together and make sure you ask to see where they keep their dogs. They aren't the 'live in the home' family pet - I had believed them to be by their website. It looked to me more like a puppy mill. They have had no less than 10-12 litters (maybe more?) in the past 6 months, quite an operation.
