We ended up with them by bundling through Progressive. The underwriters came out to see our roof and decided it was too old to be covered, so we were given a one month warning before they were dropping us. I called, and they gave us a one-month extension beyond the drop date. However, they said the extension wasn't in the system, it was a note they had put in our account. I had asked SEVERAL times if it meant the same as still having coverage. I was told yes (lies. They can check their recordings on what they said). The fastest working roofing company finished our roof four days after the initial cancellation date, but still well within the one-month extension. During that time, I received a refund check from Homesite. I called, they said just don't cash the check, once we submit updated forms and photos of our new roof, they'll just cancel it. I asked if the check was sent out automatically, and they said yes and not to worry about it. Then, after I'd submitted proof of the new roof, apparently they were supposed to send me an email where I was supposed to call in and provide a "no loss" statement. Never recieved the email. No follow up call, nothing in snail mail. I called in to follow up on the documents and photos of the new roof (still within the extension period), and that's how I found out I was supposed to call in and provide a "no loss" statement. This could've easily dragged on past the extension date. Not that it mattered, because the problems with my mortgage company that I was trying to avoid cropped up anyway. Got a letter from my mortgage stating I don't have insurance. They were going to purchase expensive insurance on our behalf and warned of us being penalized for being high risk (not carrying insurance). I called back into Homesite (fourth or fifth time by now), and got another variation on the story. That yes, my policiy had been cancelled (which I was told it would not be), but it's being reinstated as no gap. The initally story was that there would be no lapse at all. If that were true, I would not have even needed to provided the "no loss" statement (the statment that there was no damage or anything that would require them to cover regarding the roof during the period between the initial cancellation (not including the extension period) and the date when the underwriters approved the new roof). So, essentially there was a gap in my coverage afterall.

Initially, when I had explained my situation to them (perhaps I was on the phone with Progressive and not Homesite), I think I was being too candid. I told them I was going to let the cancellation take effect and just go to another insurance company. That meant taking my auto insurance too. IMO my policies are low cost, and didn't think they would miss such a small margin. My decision to stay has caused such a headache. I was told that getting an extension was an easy thing and as long as I submitted by proof/receipts and photos of a new roof before the end of the extension, there would be no gap. Now, I have a whole different issue to sort out with the mortgage company.

Recommendation: don't trust these people
