I received an email from Higbee and Associates, dated January 27, 2022, claiming that I violated copyright laws with an image I have on a blog post (since taken down) that was posted in 2016. I was under the impression the image in question was royalty-free, but I have no receipt showing such. I have had a number of correspondences with the Higbee team to try to better understand this and come up with a solution, other than paying them their $1200 fee. In doing more research I've come t discover that this appears to be a quite frequent event and several people have referred to it as "copyright trolling."
Desired outcome: I'd like to be excused from these claims as I was under the impression the image was royalty-free, plus I took it down immediately, and I had no malicious intent to harm or damage the original copyright holder.
