I HAVE AN RV FINANCED WITH GEMB LENDING, PREVIOUSLY THOR CREDIT CO. I MAKE MY PAYMENTS OVER THE PHONE AND NOW WHEN I CALL EVERY NUMBER I CAN FIND FOR THIS COMPANY THEY ARE ALL DISCONNECTED. TODAY, SUNDAY MORNING AT 8AM I GET A PHONE CALL FROM AND UNKNOWN CALLER SAYING HE WAS FROM GEMB AND WANTED TO MAKE MY PAYMENT NOW OVER THE PHONE WITH HIM. I TOLD HIM ABOUT ALL THE NUMBERS BEING DISCONNECTED AND HE SAID THEY CHANGED THEIR PHONE NUMBER LAST MONTH. I SAID IT DOES NOT REFER YOU TO THE NEW NUMBER? I ALSO TOLD HIM ABOUT ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS FROM PEOPLE ABOUT THE COMPANY. OF COURSE HE SAID HE KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THAT. HE REPEATED IF WE COULD MAKE MY PAYMENT NOW ON THE PHONE. I SAID NO, THAT I WOULD TRY TO CONTACT THE COMPANY MYSELF AND HUNG UP. WHY WOULD THIS GUY BE CALLING ME ON A SUNDAY MORNING WITH NO NUMBER ON CALLER ID? I CALLED ALL THEIR NUMBERS THIS AM AND THEY ARE ALL DISCONNECTED. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO?

Just to clarify, the time line stated for calling is according to the customers local time zone.

Dear Candygirl 1955,

I understand your confusion at the call made, but let me assure you, as a previous employee of GEMB, and with 8 years collections (and repossessions) experience under my belt; calls on a Sunday morning is not an unusual occurance. Especially in these economic times where a company's focus is more on the collections side, then the sales or even customer service side (not saying this is the case with GE), you may not receive the informative letters, recordings, or notices in the mail of any contact changes. Also, be aware, standard collection calls may take place (according to the FDCPA) from 8am-9pm 7 days a week. Most company's only place calls from 9am-5pm on Sundays. If you've never had a late payment, you may not know this, and this may cause alarm, but don't panic. Simply ask for the new contact information, and ask the representative a question only someone with access to your GE (for example) account would know. For example, "what check number did I pay with month before last?" If they cannot answer, ask for a manager, and express your concerns. If still not satisfied, disconnect and call back in to the number you were given. Also keep in mind, "Unknown" or "[protected]", or any other hidden ID is not illegal, and not unusual for collectors, as many debtors will avoid the numbers of their creditors. I will add one more thing (since I am on a roll), many of my customers were afraid to make payments over the phone, or were dismayed by the $8 check by phone charge, but when you consider: 1. the payment is already or soon late; 2. Daily interest on large loans could be $3 or more; 3. Ding on credit; these cost far more than just paying the $8 to get the payment taken care of and out of your hair. Besides, when you mail a check in, it's the same info we scan into the computer (all the #'s accross the bottom of the check). So we have no more control or access to your bank information, then we have when you take the time to mail a paper check. I know this was a lot of information, but I've always wanted to share this with the consumer; perhaps now, the collector/debtor relationship will be a little less rocky.

:)
