ASPCA Pet Health Insurance / Bad service

1 United States Review updated:

ASPCA Pet Insurance is a Fraud! Shelby, our third yellow lab, was 2 months old when we decided to get pet insurance, thinking that this would be beneficial. She had a clear bill of health from both her breeder's vet and ours when she arrived. She came with papers from AKC. After 9 months she started limping. Tests showed bilateral elbow displasia. She underwent surgery ($10, 000 including MRI and follow up care) at 13 months. Submitted claim to ASPCA and they denied (after 2 months delay) due to "Pre-existing" condition...Then they told us that "Labs are genetically prone to joint displasia". I asked how we would have known about this when applying for their insurance, they didn't have a good answer. All breeds are prone to varying disorders and I suppose that they would deny all claims based on this as well. Save your money on premiums and use it when your animals need vet care.

They're a fraud. They'll tell you one thing to sell you the insurance and as soon as you file a claim they'll find some loophole in the fine print to deny not only that claim but any others they can for the future! We're going through the same thing with them and having to wipe out our savings account to pay for a surgery we were assured was covered when we signed up!

My advice, stay away from pet health insurance. It appears that the worst scam human health insurance is 1000 times better than the best "premiere" pet health insurance! It all seems to be a scam to bilk people out of money.

My advice is find a good vet with reasonable prices, and set up a savings account for the pet. There are many complaints about pet insurance and vets over charging or not covering needed vet care. Also, maintenance care is important, make sure you keep up with their shots, pet proof your house.. IE- Make an area for them free of foods that can be harmful, baby locks on cabinets that contain cleaning supplies. Good luck to you, and sorry you had to deal with such an unethical company.
