We received a call at 8:54 PM (waking our young children) from Clean Water Action. The woman on the phone claimed that we were members of their organization who had supported them in the past. She demanded to know how much we were going to give this year. We have never heard of this organization (although it appears to be legit) and have no interest now (or ever) in supporting it. We have never been and never will be "members." A follow up call to the organization revealed that they use lists obtained from "affinity marketing relationships" and refer to "membership" as someone who supports any one of the "affinity marketing relationships." Sneaky approach and will cause us to now carefully research the privacy policy of any and all charities who hit us up for cash.

You are wrong on where they receive their data. This organization has been a canvass organization since 1972 when they got the Clean Water Act passed. They have field canvassers that go door to door to inform the public about campaigns they are working on both locally and nationally. If a person at the door donates to the campaign they just heard of (and the inconvenient truth of the matter is it takes money to fight money) then they become an active member of the organization. The member provides a phone number when they fill out their member form at the door. Then about 6months later phone canvassers call members as a follow up call to let the member know what they accomplished with the donation at the door, and what the organization is currently working on, and ask for a renewal of membership support for the current campaign. People are hard to reach as everyone has a busy life so sometimes a year or more goes by before they reach the person they signed up at the door. Maybe you don't remember the person that stopped by your door, but that is how your phone number ended up in their data-base...this organization does not purchase data!
