C spire wirelessAren't honoring contract

I have been a cellular south/ c spire customer for 11 years. My kids have grown up with their service, and I have almost always had good experiences. Recently, my son joined the Army. We all have unlimited nationwide coverage, but c spire notified us that his phone would be turned off because he has been out of the calling area for too long. WHAT???!!! Isn't that what unlimited nationwide is for??!! Now they are telling us that we have to pay the early termination fee. That is just wrong on so many levels. They informed us that they have the right to change the terms of the contract anytime they wish to. What is the point of a contract?
