Ameren Illinois review: Unexplainable electric bills

In May 2017 we purchased our home. There was a broken wire underground. Our problem to fix. As we did. Our electric bills ran about $256.00 a month. In 2019 we had an electrician put in a back up generator. Ameren then put in a smart meter. From that point on our bills ran $450-550 a month. When questioning the company I have received a large run around. We have since upgraded everything in our home with energy efficiency. And now our bills (when we sit in the dark and even have unplugged electricity running to out buildings. Use the electricityonly when necessary.) are $1000 a month it doesn't matter if we have a power outage. It doesn't matter if we turn breakers off. Ameren can't help.
