Massage Envy - deceptive way to join membership

PLEASE FORWARD TO YOUR CORPORATE OFFICES AT MASSAGE ENVY. attn: David Humphrey!

This is Richard Atkins. I had a 2 o'clock appointment today for a massage with Samantha, which, I might add went very well. However, when I was trying to enjoy the "Zen experience" of that after-the-massage feeling, I was hit with a marketing plan that caught me off guard.

The first point is this:

1. Don't hit first time customers with a marketing campaign to take their hard earned money. Especially when they have just received a massage and are trying to enjoy the after effects of a good massage. Or maybe, that is the Massage Envy plan, "get'im while they're mind's not on the marketing pitch!"
2. Secondly, the pitch is confusing, and maybe again, it is meant to be confusing. You say "we'll waive the membership if you join right now." Well, to me, membership means for the whole year, not a monthly fee of $49. That's part of the deception in the marketing pitch. And, $49 is pretty darn high in this economy. You can join a fitness club for $10 a month!
3. Then you're made to believe that for $49, you're entitled to a free massage every month. That's yet another deception in the marketing plan. You pay $49 and get the privilege of paying another $39 for your massage, so you're not out-of-pocket close to $90 bucks?! I can get a massage every month for less than that without paying a $49 monthly membership, or monthly fee.
4. I do live farther than 25 miles away as I live in the East Mountains, so it is not convenient in the least to come to you, and, I'm permanently disabled from an elevator accident which severely injured my back and knee, so I can certainly get a note from my doctor cancelling this membership, but I'd rather not go through that inconvenience and have you cancel my membership right now.
5. What you have done is sour me on Massage Envy, which means I won't be a customer again and I will let everyone know not to frequent your business, so what you have done by tricking me into joining this bogus membership is lost more business than you think you have gained.

My membership was accepted by Alicia H.

6. I came in to get a massage and relax, and left feeling ripped off and taken advantage of. What that the objective of your deceptive marketing pitch?

Please call me at your earliest convenience so we can take care of this immediately.

Thank you.
Richard Atkins

my ex girlfriend works at the altamonte springs location and said the same issues go on regularly with every client. Its a scam to get you frustrated in trying to cancel or get refund. No one will call you back ever. They say they cannot cancel when they can. They tell you they cancel then dont. Its the wait you out game so you will give up. They are franchised but sounds like a corporate game to me. She gave me so many stories especially one where the womans son died and they still did not refund the money. Its hard sell on contracts and they will tell you its easy to cancel but if you dont after 3 days you never will have any luck. they work on commision and they will be fired if they do no thit 15% attach rate. they get 850 and hour plus a tier bonus for 15% and so on according to their memberships. thats why its hard to get out once you sign it. thats why you dont get all the info up front. thats why you shouldnt give your credit card number as you will never be able to get out of the contract. if you move somewhere where there isnt a massage envy within a 25 mile radius you can opt out. and rates arent honored in other areas of the country of what you signed up in. plus if you miss your appointment and dont cancel youre charged. again your credit card will be charged.

I agree with JLPorter. So many times people just don't listen well and then blame someone else for a decision they themselves made. I work for massage envy and quite frankly, anyone that doesn't see the economic value of what we offer, but the healing that goes along with that, should go somewhere else, because these people are usually what we describe as "energy vampires" that are all too comfortable with their own blanket of negativity and enjoy passing it along.

I think you have misunderstood the monthly membership and the need for therapeutic massage.
I have been a member for awhile and have greatly benefited from the program.
The $49 monthly payment DOES include a one hour massage. So with that you get a massage every month. If you get more than one massage a month then they are $39 after that. You CANNOT find a better rate than that anywhere. When you join they waive the enrollment fee, not the membership. Not sure where you got that.
I'm sorry you feel ripped off and taken advantage of but no one made you sign up. That was your own decision.
If you do in fact have a disability then you should educate yourself on the benefits of massage, as many doctors are now recommending regular massages. It has helped me in so many ways!

Massage Envy - unfair wages

After 18 days of employment I was fired unfairly as the administrative manager of 2 Massage Envy's (owners are Earl and Elaine Brooks) However the Owner did not pay me for 3 days that I worked plus commission( the total amount due to me were $399.00) I not only worked 8hours a day with no supervision from the old manager, I also worked overtime marketing the business. The owners of these 2 Massage Envy pride themselves as Christians but they common thieves.

Wow, I went to the new local massage envy (pensacola fl) and I felt this. I got my $49 massage and was hard sale'd the memebership afterwards. I wondered why all their therapist seemed to be little kids who just graduated massage school. They seemed to be more focused on what paperwork and protocol they were suppose to be doing rather than giving me a good massage. I felt guilty afterwards like I took advantage of my girl. :( After searching a little online I found this and realised that, while I'm in a different state the owners are the same. Not surprisingly this is common practice. They have done this to several Clinic Administrators as well. :(

There are 2 sides to every story and I know the Brooks' personally. I know they handle all their affairs with the highest level of honesty and integrity. I also know Van performed multiple unethical actions during her short time of employment.
