I have been a loyal Meijer customer for years. Today, I attempted to use my Meijer card to buy some essential groceries, but was told I could not use that card. Why? Because my maiden name is on the card.
I usually use the self-checkout lanes, as I did today. For the past month or so, when I have used my card the self-checkout attendant has needed to come look at my ID. Never has anyone even commented that my name is different on the Meijer card than on my driver's license. Honestly, I did not realize that my maiden name was on the card- I've been married 8 years now and changed all of my information within a few months of getting married- or I would have contacted someone to have them update the card.
The attendant would not let me use my card. She said the name has to match exactly. She brought the manager over to explain to me that it was a new policy. I explained that I needed my groceries, but he would not make an exception. In no way was I informed about this policy change prior to the incident. How could I be expected to know your policy on this? I was embarrassed and had to leave my groceries.
Afterward in the parking lot, I called Customer Care and explained the situation. "Richard" said that he could send out a new card with my correct name. I asked how that would help me buy my groceries today. He said, "It won't." I told him that I will be paying off my card and not shopping at Meijer again, to which he replied, "I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you for calling Customer Care." Then he ended the call.
So now your people have embarrassed me publicly AND they have been rude. I am sorely disappointed in the lack of assistance your employees have offered. I will not be shopping at Meijer again. Customer service goes a long way, and Meijer representatives have proven that Meijer does not care about their customers.
