I had a small patio project. It took a few months before there was an opening in their calendar. Each step took a while, but I was treated with respect for such a small project. Just waiting for the final sealer so I can start enjoying the new patio.

We are now at the end of our 3 month remodel project. What a adventure! Very thankful for how Renaissance stood by us through all the unexpected challenges. And the end result is worth it! Thank you Renaissance for the addition to our home including a four season room and new deck. We look forward to enjoying it, and sharing it with others, in the years ahead.

Our experience with Renaissance Exteriors was great on all levels. They were on time with their follow ups, clear in their quotes, fixed any problems quickly and satisfactorily, and stuck to their quote when the job was finished.

We had a grate experience with Renaissance. Due to covid it took a while to get our new slider and window from the factory but once it was in, the installation and the quality of the product was wonderful! The Installers were very knowledgeable and courteous. They made sure to cover all areas they would be working in and did an outstanding job! We would highly recommend Renaissance for any job!

Me and my wife decided to stick with our old EGR crib after 23 years of owning it. But to make it happen, we needed a major makeover inside. We went with Renaissance as our main contractor and they started the job in January . Let me tell you, we ain't regretting our choice one bit. Our project boss, Keith Kuiper, was top-notch in leading the whole thing. He was friendly, professional, knew his stuff, kept us in the loop, and had everything organized. Renaissance's subcontractors were also great in many ways (experienced, respectful, did quality work, had some creative ideas, you name it). They finished the whole shebang by May 1, right on schedule and right on budget. If you're thinking about a big renovation project, inside or out, we highly recommend this local Grand Rapids crew. We had a blast going through the process and now we get to enjoy a big, fresh, open space in our main room for years to come. Plus, it'll be a major selling point if we ever decide to pass it on to another family. Good job, Keith Kuiper and Renaissance!

We contacted Renaissance Roofing and Exteriors on their website to get an estimate for finishing our basement. We wanted to turn about 1000 ft2 of the 1500 ft2 area into a big bedroom, an office, a full bathroom, a family room, and some closets. We also needed to strengthen some ceiling joists to fix a bouncy main floor. This part was really important to us. Renaissance, including the owner (Jim Schultz), worked with us and visited our house a few times to figure out the details. They even had some of the trades contractors come to the house to get accurate estimates and avoid any surprise costs later on. We really appreciated this extra effort and that's why we chose them for the job.

It took a while for construction to start, but then it went in the usual order - fixing the joists, doing the rough carpentry, HVAC/electrical/plumbing work, putting up drywall, painting, adding trim, and installing the flooring. Some trades were busier than others, so there were a few delays, but overall, the project stayed on schedule. Renaissance provided an interior designer to help us with choosing colors and fixtures at the right times during the project.

Now, let's talk about the results:

Overall Project Management

The project manager for our project was really knowledgeable, friendly, and did a good job keeping things on track. Even though we were told to communicate through their BuilderTrend website, we found it easier to reach the project manager through text messages and calls. This caused some communication issues in the beginning. Sometimes we were surprised when a contractor showed up without notice. The project manager did try to coordinate with the contractors to meet the project end date.

Rough Carpentry

The rough carpenters did a good job fixing the joists and building the new walls and bulkheads. The joist fixes and some of the new walls really helped with the floor issues on the main level. The walls were mostly well-built, especially the door frames. We added some shims between the new walls and the overhead joists to make sure the walls supported the joists properly. However, the walls for the new bathroom were slightly crooked, which affected the outcome of that room.

HVAC

The original HVAC setup in the basement only had three small outlets connected to the main HVAC supply duct. The temperature was controlled by the thermostat upstairs. Also, the return duct to the furnace was too small. The HVAC work included adding a second zone for the basement, a bypass duct, and a larger return duct. The modifications in the utility room look a bit strange because the contractor had to work around the original setup. The contractor was able to reroute a duct to avoid adding another bulkhead, which we appreciated. They also made sure our furnace and A/C were the right size for two zones. The system seems to work, but we haven't tested it for heating the basement yet.

Electrical

The electrical work included adding new circuits, more outlets, lots of lights, and wiring for Ethernet and speakers. The electrician asked for our input when needed and did a good job.

Plumbing

The plumbing work involved running supply and drain lines for the new bathroom, installing bathroom fixtures, and setting up the plumbing for a future wet bar. They also made several adjustments to the existing plumbing, like moving an outside spigot and the main sprinkler supply. The plumbers asked for our input and did a good job.

Drywall

The drywall contractor did a good job hanging the drywall, especially in tight areas. The mudding and ceiling texture went well, but after painting, we noticed some visible seams on the ceiling and walls. One wall had a visible patch that didn't match the rest of the paint. Some corners showed the edge of the corner bead, which could be seen in certain lighting. Overall, the drywall work looked good, but these imperfections took away from the overall quality.

Painting

The painting involved using 5 different colors and sheens throughout the basement. The doors, trim, and ceilings were sprayed and looked great. The walls were painted well too.

Trim Carpenter

The trim carpenter did a great job with the door trim, base trim, door trimming, and installing the door hardware.

Flooring

The flooring installation went well. We had LVP in the family room and bathroom, and carpet in the office and bedroom. It looks great, especially the carpet in the bedroom. The pattern is hardly noticeable, and the seam is invisible.

Areas that didn't meet expectations:

Shower Surround

This was the biggest disappointment. The completed shower surround and spout installation didn't have the same quality as the rest of the bathroom. It looked like something an amateur homeowner would do, not professionals. The plumbing contractor tried to fix some issues, but it could have been better.

Attention to Detail

There were several areas where the finished project lacked attention to detail, which affected the overall quality of the work. Here are some specifics:

1) Drywall - Some areas of the drywall ceiling had visible ridges along the seams under certain lighting conditions. We tried to fix them, but now there's a patch with a different texture and a wall with a slight color variation. Some corners showed the edge of the corner bead in certain lighting. These imperfections took away from the overall quality.
2) Electrical - Some electrical outlets were finished with visibly tilted outlets and covers. We're not sure if they can be adjusted.
3) HVAC - The installation of the supply and return grilles showed a lack of attention to detail. There were gaps between the grilles and the walls/ceiling, and the screws used to attach the grilles were chipped and scraped.

Summary

Overall, our basement completion project with Renaissance went well, even though it took a little longer than expected. Considering the high demand after COVID-19, we think it went pretty smoothly. Communication was generally okay, and the work seems to be of good quality. We really appreciated the upfront work to define the scope and firm up the total cost. Our only disappointments were the shower surround and some instances where attention to detail could have been better.
