tI was warded on yhe 16th mar 2010 for administering the sleeping pill intravaneously therby causing excruciating pain to my right leg. I had hoped by admitting myself i could get painkillers to relieve my pain which has by this time been excruciating.
The doctor on duty(Dr Chia Kok Hoong) to my surprise and horror refused to administer any painkillers,
telling my mother this would teach me a lesson. I was simply put on a drip and to suffer the pain from 2am to 930am.When he came back in the morning i was alredy packing up to leave after suffering the last six hours wondering if i should have come. the nurse then told me a certain Dr Brian Yeo wanted to see me but at that time i told the nurse i will see him another day after waiting half hour.finally as i was leaving, i met him at the lift lobby and all he said was to ask me to check in his clinic which i refused knowing his exhorbitant price which i could not afford anyway. The biggest shock came when ireceived my bill from Mt Elizabeth. The doctor fee for Dr Chia Kok Hoong Was $500. Firstly no medication was given upon discharge and no Painkillers were administered to me when i was in excruciating pain. Are doctors supposed to pass moral judgment on patients and decide who should get painkillers and who is not? Dont they have an ethical duty to treat all patients regardless even if the patient is a murderer? Secondly, knowing Dr Brian and Dr Chia are schoolmates, are they suppose to canvass patients for each other? I have repeatedly told Dr chia that if i wanted to see Brian yEO, I KNOW WHERE HIS OFFICE IS. But Dr chia insisted that Dr brian Yeo out of concern just wanted to have a few words With me. Finally after waiting for half hour as i was leaving with my mum, we met at the lift lobby. His only question to me was whether i wanted to check into his clinic which i refused politely. also i told him i would seek him in future if i needed to. Then came the bombshell bill from Mt Elizabeth. The total bill came up to $1443. Dr chia Kok Hoong's fee is $500 and DR Brian Yeo kah loke'S was $200.
throughout my 6 hours i was practically just put on a glucose drip without painkillers. but the most shocking was the charge for Dr Brian Yeo Kah Loke for the 2 min talk at the lift lobby. With all due respect to the Medical profession, Dr Chia spent not even half hour merely using visual assessment of my leg while not precribing any medication even when i left or a next appoinment to monitor my condition. I am both appalled and angry that a reputable hospital would practice such unprofessional behaviour and yet charge exhorbitant prices for not treating their patients when they are in pain. I sincerely hope the relevant board would look into the case and i would be most willing to assist in anyway i can to prevent future cases from ever happening again. Thank You.

I am a patient of Dr.chia who I have to state from the begining is an amazing doctor, absolutely dedicated, highly intelligent and caring, all the qualities of a doctor that I saw in the movies and never thought they are such dedicated and highly knowledgeable doctors around till i met Dr.chia .
HE came at WEE MORNING 4am to TREAT me FOR my 2nd degree burn that was caused by my kettle bursting due to faulty electric circuit .i was not treated well by nurses at A n E and the night nurses at ward 5b as they were unprofessional fumbling and didn't practice good hygenie .
When i asked for my doctor they told me that doctors will come in the early morning but i was in pain. Like a angel Dr.chia walked in within minutes he was informed .
I was in pain and nervous of scarring .he put me at ease and JUST by one look he he told me the degree of burn and how long it will take to recover and he was amazingly on dot .

I was initially asked to take a cosmetic surgeon by the A n E doctor and his nurses said that cosmetic surgeon charges was 5000 for just attending to me n no treatment given that i though was a ridiculous price just for coming and taking a look at my wounds .
Dr.chia charged me a very reasonable price that is very affordable and he was so kind and generous with his time that I recovered fast and unlike other burns patient I didn't even need a dermatologist .
I had my share of bad doctor s at Mount elizabeth hospital .
They often recommended unimpressive doctors and in one instance mount elizabeth hospital gave me chest specialists in Nov 17 who charged me 2000 just for dropping in to check on me when he has clinic at the same HOSPITAL and prescribing cheap plasters whan i had muscle construction at chest area due to a fall .he did not even bother to examine my chest area once and he withhold tje favt he was flying off for long hokidays the next day and so can't see if my pain persists. He was a horrible chest doctor and i brought up this unfair practice to mount elizabeth but they did nothing.
Dr Chua is the only highly skilled and dedicated doctor cum surgeon I have come across .He made me feel calm down with his confidence, and assured that I will recover soon and will be able to walk normal again soon.
I totally agree with the good people above that he is a highly dedicated
dedicated and hard-working doctor whoi have utmost respect for.

The only amazing doctor this hospitem has recommendedto me so far is Dr.chia and this save themselves from the negligent way they handle patients at A n E .

I was also admitted at ward 5a previously whose nurses were lazy, irresponsible and could not even prepare me ahead for my surgery .the nurses were silly and running Moscow circus at ward 5a this ward at 5b I was taken very good care of the doctor and he made sure the nurses take good care of me by asking if i am eating and resting well. He also made sure they used clean wipes and hands to handle equipment door and during all dressing so I will not received any infection.i must truly say this to, the nurses were kept on their toes and treated me well and with professionalism that never did at ward 5a as they were simply unprofessional there .
Its truly only due to my doctor. I owe my complete and fast recovery to and he handle my drug allergy very well and was a expert in handling my pain care that unlike my previous hospitalisation I did not require a separate doctor as the pain specialist. I will highly recommend Dr Chua as he is spot on his diagnosis by observation itself. He is way better than a shaman even and top it all he is an amazing human being .

My late mum was hospitalized for a couple of months because of various diabetic related complications, and she eventually passed on. During the time she was in hospital, my brother was in touch with a Vascular Surgeon, Dr Chia Kok Hoong from Mt Elizabeth hospital. He proved to be an exceptional doctor, not just in terms of his knowledge and experience, but also the genuine care and concern that he showed towards my mum, through my brother.

He was always easily reachable and would always offer the best possible advise and options to my brother with regards to my mum. While I myself have not dealt with him directly, I have heard only the best feedback on him from the doctors in the hospital and how much respect and admiration they have for Dr Chia as a doctor, and a medical professional.

With healthcare playing a very significant role in an aging society like Singapore, and standards and demands getting higher, we would definitely need the likes of Dr Chia Kok Hoong to play a pivotal role in ensuring the very high standards of healthcare in Singapore and ASEAN!

I certainly wish him and his team all the very best.

Anand

24-yr-old driver stuck in wreck for 30 minutes

By Bryna Sim

HE HAD just finished work yesterday at 7pm and was preparing for bed. But the sharp, screeching sound of tyres, followed by a loud bang, dashed his plans. Safety coordinator Francis Amutha, 33, an Indian national, dashed out of his office at the upcoming Lucida condominium construction site immediately to see what had happened.

The first thing he felt was fear.

'I was so scared that someone had died, ' he said.

As he ran out of the compound with about 30 fellow Indian and Chinese nationals, they saw smoke billowing from a twisted heap of metal.

According to the police, a car had skidded and hit a tree. It occurred at the junction of Thomson Road and Suffolk Road, near the Kampung Java flyover. Because the driver's side was badly damaged, Mr Amutha and some others approached the passenger's side instead.

'We forced open the passenger side car door, and I saw a man trapped inside, ' said Mr Amutha.

He called out to the driver and was relieved to find out that he was still alive. SCDF personnel confirmed that the driver of the black Volvo car was a 24-year old male Chinese.

Mr Amutha asked the man: 'Hello sir, are you okay?

'When he answered me, I was relieved.'

He then asked the man if he could try to get out of the wreckage himself, but the man replied that his legs were stuck. Together with some other Chinese nationals armed with crowbars, Mr Amutha decided to try to prise open the door on the driver's side.

But they were stopped by Dr Chia Kok Hoong, 48, a surgeon, who lives at the condominium Ten @ Suffolk, located just next to the Lucida condominium construction site.

He was at home when he heard the bang and decided to see what had happened.

'Don't move him'

Said Dr Chia: 'I told the workers not to move the driver because they did not have the right equipment and might end up injuring him further.'

He was also concerned that the driver might have broken bones.

'If that were so, pressure from the wreckage might actually prevent more blood from escaping, whereas releasing this pressure might lead to the driver bleeding further, ' he said.

Mr Amutha took his advice, and told his fellow workers to bring fire extinguishers and strong searchlights from their construction site instead.

'I didn't want to stand around doing nothing. Since smoke was coming out from the car, I thought that the extinguishers would be useful in case a fire broke out, ' he said.

Dr Chia also spoke with the driver, who was still conscious.

'He gave me his name and home number, and asked me to contact his family, ' said Dr Chia.

SCDF personnel who arrived at the scene extricated the driver with a hydraulic spreader and cutter in 25 minutes. 'The driver is suspected to have sustained a right thigh fracture, left shoulder dislocation, as well as abrasions and cuts, ' said an SCDF spokesman.

The police spokesman added that the driver was taken conscious to Tan Tok Seng hospital.

He was trapped in his seat for about 30 minutes.

According to Dr Chia, the driver's parents and another woman arrived at the scene just in time to see him being wheeled into the waiting ambulance.

'They thanked me and were glad to know that a doctor was with their son, ' he said.

For Mr Amutha and his fellow workers, it was a night to remember.

He said: 'I have been here since 1997 and this is the first time I've seen such a terrible accident.'

Even so, he was glad to have been of help. He said the searchlights were useful.

'We directed the searchlights at the wreckage and assisted the SCDF personnel, ' he said.

He's also glad to have put his training as safety coordinator into practice.

'I'm glad that the man is alive, ' he added.

A DOCTOR alleged to have damaged a US Merchant Marine’s hand during a liposuction treatment will face a disciplinary hearing after intervention by the Health Minister.

Rescue swimmer Michael Balensiefer, 36, was told he should not return to his job with the US Navy after damage to his hand and lower arm, which he claims was caused by Dr Kevin Teh at the Singapore Lipo, Body and Face Centre in 2009.

He complained about Dr Teh, a general practitioner who specialises in aesthetic treatments, to the Singapore Medical Council (SMC), whose complaints committee said it found no evidence of professional misconduct.

But it told him it would issue a letter of warning to the doctor.

Mr Balensiefer then appealed to the minister in December 2010. In May 2011, he was told that then Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan had directed the SMC to hold a disciplinary hearing on the case.

The American is also suing Dr Kevin Teh in the High Court.

He was in Singapore in March 2009 for knee treatment and while recuperating, he inquired about having liposuction on his body at the Singapore Lipo, Body and Face Centre in Novena.

He paid $1, 926 for the treatment and told Dr Kevin Teh he was allergic to amoxicillin – a common antibiotic.

Mr Balensiefer – described by another doctor who treated him as “good looking, like (Hulk actor) Eric Bana” – claims Dr Teh negligently gave him the drug, then inappropriately tried to alleviate the allergy symptoms with another drug that caused the problem with his hand, despite the availability of safer alternatives.

He also claims Dr Teh failed to provide sufficient and timely post-operative care to his swollen and blistered right hand, and failed to give full disclosure of the drugs given.

This hampered treatment of his hand by doctors at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Another of his claims states the doctor violated the prescribed seven-day cooling period mandated by the Ministry of Health (MOH) for liposuction treatment.

However, Dr Teh told The Straits Times that this rule does not apply to foreigners.

According to papers filed in the High Court, Dr Teh’s two attempts to insert a needle into the back of Mr Balensiefer’s right hand caused “moderate” pain but were “very bloody” with a “significant amount of blood both on his hand and on the floor”.

When the doctor injected the contents of the syringe, the patient called out “hot, hot, very hot”. Dr Teh stopped the injection and proceeded with the liposuction.

When the patient woke up six hours later he said he felt “extreme tightness in his right hand” which “looked very swollen”.

The clinic staff told him everything had gone well and made an appointment for him to see the doctor the following day.

His hand was still swollen with two blisters at the injection sites. Dr Teh applied some gauze dressing and said it would get better.

But two days later, the swelling had extended almost up to his elbow. A week after the treatment, the pain became severe and his hand darkened.

He went to the emergency department at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where two vascular surgeons warned that his thumb might have to be amputated.

Dr Chia Kok Hoong, then head of vascular surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, found 15cm of blocked artery in his right forearm.

He operated and removed most of the blockage and saved his thumb from amputation but some damage remained.

Dr Chia told him to avoid cold exposure, which means he “may no longer return” to his swimming job.

He is also a chief radio electronics technician.

To whom it may concern,

My best friend of 40 years consulted Dr Chia on doing an angioplasty as she had difficulty walking. She found Dr Chia to be not just a very experience and knowledgeable doctor, but more importantly, someone who was compassionate, caring and took the time and effort to go through the details with her. She's someone who is usually not comfortable with doctors, but in the case of Dr Chia, it was different, and she really could feel his sense of sincerity.

Dr Chia is an expert in his field of General and Vascular Surgery and he would certainly be someone I would recommend to patients. In fact, I would patients will find themselves honoured and privileged to be in the care of a top notch medical professional like Dr Chia.

All the best to you Dr Chia!

My mum was warded in Tan Tock Seng Hospital on the week of the 20th January 2014
after suffering a mild heart attack, and also for untreated diabetes. She had a
12cm wound on her right leg that was not treated for a couple of weeks and was
getting worse by the day. Sometime in early February, I was informed by the
doctors at Tan Tock Seng that my mum would need an amputation on her right leg.
This struck me like a lighting bolt and I was devastated. It was during this
time that I was strongly recommended to see Dr Chia Kok Hoong from Mt Elizabeth
Hospital.

I immediately called up and made an appointment to see him with regards to my
mum's condition. Dr Chia was very patient, caring, compassionate, and detailed
with me in his explanation, and simplified his explanation for me in layman
terms, knowing that I didn't have a medical background. His consultation took
40 minutes, and he was always patient in answering my questions, and gave me an
assured and calming effect, especially when I was nervous, and feeling lost.
Towards the end of the week, on a Saturday, his nurse followed up with a call
to me to find out how my mum was doing, and if there was anything that she or
Dr Chia could do. That meant a lot tome, and certainly I was always in touch with Dr Chia and kept him informed of
my mum's progress.
Unfortunately, my mum's condition deteriorated, and after one to many procedures, she
collapsed on the 31st of March 2014. The MRI scan showed that she had suffered
a brain damage and based on my conversation with the neurologist at NNI, her
chances of recovery were very unlikely. I was in a state of shock and after
sometime, I composed myself and reached out to Dr Chia to seek his opinion on
what I should do. He felt I should seek a second opinion and referred me to Dr
Tang Kok Foo from Mt Elizabeth Hospital. My worst fears were confirmed when I
spoke to Dr Tang Kok Foo, and he told me that my mum would very unlikely
recover.

Sadly for all of us, my mum passed away peacefully on the 7th July 2014. We believe
she has moved on to a better place. I am writing this email on behalf of my
family to show our appreciation to Dr Chia Kok Hoong on the help he has
rendered us. His compassion, warmth, sincerity, coupled with his profound
medical knowledge, and willingness to help, makes him a gift to the medical
profession and a true asset to Mt Elizabeth Hospital

I wish Dr Chia and his team all the best!
