I used to be an events manager for them in southern california. his strategy would be to hire people off craig's list, tell them they would get their first check in about three weeks, in that time they would work multiple events unpaid, and when it was time for them to get paid, it would take a few more weeks and lots of phone calls to get them paid. finally the vendors would stop working and he would hire more and do the same thing, occasionally his checks would bounce and it took threats of law suits to get them taken care of. they also never looked ahead of time to get the necessary inventory ready for the shows and the blame would fall on me from the venue manager. i finally left after a few months because i got really frustrated with having to tell the vendors to call mark and jonathan about them not getting their paychecks. about six months later i got a call from a long time vendor saying that all of them havent been paid in over three months, and jonathan kept telling them that the pay checks were coming. i am sorry ahead of time for anyone that does business with them because i see that it is a trend and pretty much a scam

Just be sure when you do go to the department of labor you make sure you have all possible addresses of the company and figure out which state the company is registered in. It's not New Jersey.

*A paycheck dated 4/10/2011 came in with no work dates on it in the amount of $631.49
**A paycheck dated 4/29/2011 came in with the work dates of 4/5, 6, 9, 11, 22 without the per-day payments itemized, for $64.57
The total of all my paychecks was $1979.54

Total commissions calculated as earned: $3082.158
The amount I was paid on those days that I don’t know what I earned: $453.87

· On Feb 28, the manager, Scott, failed to write down $100 that I had turned in during the game, and did not believe me when I told him I had.. He insisted that I cover the missing $100 with whatever money I had (tips and whatever I had in my pocket when I came in that day). After all the other vendors had turned in their sales and inventory was taken, it was discovered that I was right and he was wrong, but they only had $80 in cash to pay me back. Therefore I am owed $20 for that day.
· On March 24, I was called in the night before to work the NCAA fan fest in Championship Plaza. I sold nothing for 90 minutes in the cold at this poorly attended event at which there were other food vendors. I was told by the manager Bruce Herzog that what I did helped the company. I told him I wanted $20 for my time. He said to tell Mark and I would be “taken care of better than that.” I never got the chance to tell Mark, and I have been paid nothing. I will accept my original request of $20 for that day.
· After one game, late in the season (I can’t remember which game) the manager, Dave, failed to account for $108 in candy that I had sold when it was time for me to turn in the money. I waited and let him check over his figures several times, amnd encouraged him to do so, as I thought that it was an unusually large amount for me to have left over. He could not find anything wrong with his figures then so I left. About an hour later, when I was already halfway home, he called me to inform me of his mistake. I asked him to please take it out of my next paycheck. So that is $108 to me in addition to what I have been paid.

Total of commissions earned, both estimated and actual, plus monies owed for miscellaneous reasons, and including the amounts paid on days in which I do not have records: $3561.598 (the actual total should be higher due to estimations)

Total paid to me in commissions, plus the $108 mentioned above: $2180.92

Estimated total of unpaid commissions and other monies owed by Canvas Corp to me: $1380.678

The actual total should be higher due to estimations.

Anyone is welcome to check my math and let me know if I figured this out wrong. I have documentation to backup every figure.

I worked for Canvas Corp at the Prudential Center from Nov 25, 2010 until May 25, 2011. I was never paid the commission for my first day's work, nor for many other days, either. The commissions would come in at various levels, almost always below the 13% I was told we were supposed to get. I asked Mark Sarnoff for the employer ID number so I could report the job the the Dept of Labor, from whom I was collecting unemployment, and he never got around to giving it to me. When I asked for a 1099 form so I could file my takes, he said they didn;t have to give one if the income was below a certain level, and that he was not going to give me one. I worked the NASCAR event in Las Vegas, which started out promising, but turned out to be very poorly organized. Mark Sarnoff all but accused me of lying when I told him about some of the things that went wrong in Las Vegas, and told people that I had stolen from customers when someone accused me of giving incorrect change (I would never deliberately short-change a customer, much less steal from anyone). I had been one of the best vendors there, putting up cotton candy numbers with sodas and popcorn, with never a complaint about the hard work. He said I would get the commissions I was owed in a matter of weeks after I stopped working there, and I have yet to see a penny since. When I applied for unemployment after I stopped working there, the Labor Dept. of NJ said they had no record of me working in NJ.I have filed a complaint with the Labor Dept for unpaid wages and am waiting for it to go through.

You speak for everyone who works for this company, really? If these incidents did occur...I'm sure you wouldn't have worked there as long as you did. Not everyone gets/got treated "badly" like you say/said. I never encountered any problems receiving a paycheck. Just quit next time. I'm content with working for the canvas corporation.

Wow, I do not agree! Why don't you all sit down and have a serious talk with your managers, and the higher ups? They have always been welcoming and able to adress any issues I have ever had (if any) and they are very nice people.

I too have worked for canvas/Icandy and do not find any of the experiences relayed on this website as unfathomable. Everything I see on this board I can relate to. I can't understand how people can treat other people so badly after they work so hard for them. Organized action needs to be taken against ICandy but I have no doubts they(Mark Sarnoff and Bruce Herzog) will get their just desserts.

I have been working for Icandy or Canvas Corp whatever the hell they are called for over a month now(more than five events), and I still have not received any compensation in the mail. I am having trouble getting in touch with AP(called and left messages multiple times, no return call). This work is NOT easy and these people should be ashamed for taking advantage of hard working people just trying to earn SOME income in this blasted economy. The managers lie to you and say cokes and water sell the best just to get you to carry them up and down the stands all game while you break your back. You end up getting twenty or thirty bucks commission for selling "the best" product but all I have is a backache to show for it. Meanwhile the cotton candy vendors are making over a hundred in commission an event, but cokes are the best product to sell? BULL! Stop lying having some integrity instead of being spineless weasels all your life. Trust, whether you call it karma or not, this will come back TENFOLD to bite you scammers in the ###. It makes me SICK that these people can sleep at night knowing they are taking advantage of people who are JUST TRYING TO GET BY! I have a BA in Psychology but the job market is so crappy that I had to settle for ANYTHING. So far, I have run across nothing but scams, and it kills me to find out that the "job" I have been working for the past month could be one of them. Just pay your workers! You charge so much for the products you should be able to PAY UP!

I have worked for I Candy/Canvas Corp since Feb of 2011. It is now June 2011 and I can say I will never ever work another event. My friend was NEVER paid for an event that she worked in Feb and my checks have been 3-4 months late. I call and email on a weekly basis at least 5-6 times and I've been promised over and over that the check issues will not be a problem anymore and that they are resolving the issue. Misty Masters is one of the high ups in charge of payroll and she has promised on more than 4 or 5 occasions in emails and in phone calls that she is resolving the check issues with Mark. I STILL HAVE NO CHECKS. They still owe me around 500 dollar and I plan on going to the labor board next week. DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY! Furthermore, when I worked big events up in Vegas it was extremely disorganized and we did not have a hotel room that they were suppose to book for us. It ended up being 6 people in one room! It really IS slave labor. They promise you all these things to coax you into working events and that it will be worth your time because you could be making a lot of money in sales but that has NEVER happened.

If you choose to work for his man, realize that you will not get a paycheck in a reasonable amount of time, if ever.
He will lie to your face every step of the way.
This man has no integrity, and breaks numerous federal laws while doing business.
He is not registered to conduct business outside the state of New York, nor is he paying the appropriate taxes throughout the country.
He is currently under investigation by the Department of Justice for illegal hiring practices, the Department of Labor for failure to pay his employees, and the Internal Revenue Service for tax fraud.

It actually takes about 3 weeks to get your check for an event on the west coast, Call your recruiter or manager to ask about the pay schedule. The vendors get paid, there have been some mistakes along the way where vendors got late checks, but no one has worked and not been paid their commission. He is a little unorganized but honest.

Hi, I worked for them last sat in Pasadena, ca...I am not sure how long ago these complaints were...the event was cash at the end of the day. I have to say it was not easy work, due to the physical climbing of the bleachers/stairs but it was a lot of fun :)

I am going to work for them again where they pay me in 2 weeks...and if it doesn't come in two weeks as agreed, I will not work for them again...I don't screw around. However, the managers were nice...I had no problems...and it was decent money and a lot of fun. So that is my 2 cents :)

For many events, vendors are paid cash at the end of their shift. Any issues that have occurred, happened in a district other than the Midwest, and years ago. In the past two years, since our manager came on board, we have had no problems like this. The local manager takes care of things.

This was a horrible HORRIBLE experience. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WORK FOR THEM because you are basically volunteering as you will never get paid. I heard someone is going to file a class action lawsuit. Good! Sign me up! In the meantime I suggest everyone file complaints with your state's labor board or whatever. And call the Venues that you worked for (ICANDY/CANVAS CORP's EMPLOYERS!) and COMPLAIN COMPLAIN COMPLAIN! SQUEAK THOSE WHEELS!

another thing the workers didnt know was that they were considered self-employed & the money he owed them is basically like an invoice...if he doesnt pay in 30 days you can charge penalties & take him to court.

I was also a vendor for Mark Sarnoff's company iCandy/canvas corp & had the same issues on numerous occasions. I was also questioned by police & almost arrested for cashing checks that were bouncing. DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT WORK FOR THIS MAN & HIS COMPANY...HE'S A FRAUD WHO DOESNT CARE ABOUT HIS EMPLOYEES WHO BREAK THEIR BACKS TO MAKE HIS MONEY.
