Our family is currently building our second shell building with the materials purchased through Great Western Buildings (GWB). The first one was started in 2024. Other than missing six girt connection pieces that my husband was able to manufacture and weld (never did receive the parts Tyler Doty stated would be shipped to us), things went pretty smoothly. My sister and her husband were so impressed, they decided to purchase their shell building from GWB, as well. Unfortunately, when there was a problem with the design, we discovered that GWB will is not standing behind their product. Rather than quickly working to remedy the issue with the design, understanding expensive equipment and weather make a timely response essential, it has been difficult to reach the right people and it takes days to get calls and emails returned. When they do respond, all effort seems to be focused on why the purchaser is in the wrong rather than fixing the problem. In our case, the final approved design was changed by GWB without our knowledge prior to going for permit drawings. These changes were not "clouded" as changes normally are so that they are easily identified by anyone involved in typical construction drawings. The stated reason for the change was that it was more efficient and cost-effective for GWB to change the windows openings from a size that did fit to a size that does not fit within the girts.
We requested six DJ-5s, three DS-2s and 6 connections plates to remedy the problem. Rather than sending the necessary replacement pieces, GWB representatives suggested we cut into the girts they told us were necessary to handle the snowload in order to make the windows we ordered per the specifications provided to GWB fit.
How Bryce Beosier and Tony Lambert at GWB handle this situation is, as I said, defining. We are currently looking at having the parts manufactured by a different company...what a sad statement to have to make. The added days to the rental of a boom lift, telehandler and scissor lift while attempting and failing to remedy the situation with GWB, outweighs the cost.
