If this review was based off the process and ease of getting the loan then they would get a 5 star but its not. I am a Florida resident and a 100% VA Disabled Veteran, and my experience with Earnest has been extremely negative. I refinanced a private student loan directly with Earnest — it was not school‑certified, not originated through a college, and not a Title IV federal loan. Because of this, the loan was fully dischargeable in my Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Earnest was listed in my schedules, included in the creditor matrix, notified by the court, and the debt was discharged. One major credit bureau has already updated the tradeline to show the discharge.
Despite all of this, Earnest continues to claim the loan was “not discharged,” continues to report a balance due, continues to show a payment due date, and continues collection activity. They refuse to update their records or correct their credit reporting. This contradicts federal bankruptcy law and has caused significant hardship.
I have filed complaints with CFPB, FTC, the U.S. Trustee, multiple state Attorneys General, the BBB, and the Department of Education’s Ombudsman. Earnest still refuses to acknowledge the discharge. Consumers should be aware of how Earnest handles discharged debts and how difficult it is to get them to follow federal law. Awaiting decision.
