I got a dog from a local animal shelter, and she had to be spayed before coming home to us. The Shelter does not contract with my Veterinarian of choice, so I agreed on one that they recommended - Dr Rex. When my husband picked up Betty from Dr Rex's office, he was asked to read the post-operative instructions and to sign the page, indicating he'd done so. They did not have a copy of the instructions to send home with him. That evening I telephoned Dr Rex's office to make sure I understood the post-op instructions, as repeated by my husband. I reached an answering machine, so left a message. The following afternoon I had not received a call back, so I called Dr Rex's office again. After about a dozen times of getting a "busy" signal, I finally got through to a live person. She basically confirmed what my husband had told me, and dismissed my malcontent. My dog was clearly uncomfortable with the WIRE sutures and there was some swelling, but otherwise o.k.. Seven days later, I noticed that Betty was bleeding from her vagina. I telephoned Dr Rex's office and left an urgent voicemail message. I waited all day for a return call. I called them again at the end of the day and left a very irritated-sounding message regarding my dog, who had just had a hysterectomy and SHOULD NOT BE BLEEDING. The following day - day #8 post-op - I once again called Dr Rex's office and left a v/m message. I waited a couple of hours, then called again. The gal who answered the phone gave me the brush-off (AGAIN), explaining that it was Dr Rex's short day and he had come in for only about an hour, but offered to put Betty on the schedule for "next week". "Never mind," I told her, "She is already coming in day after tomorrow for her suture removal, and apparently you people don't seem to think it's anything important, anyway." So day #10 arrives, and my husband takes Betty in to have her sutures removed. Dr Rex's diagnosis for the vaginal bleeding? "Vaginitis". And his prescription? "Just give her some yogurt - it'll clear up." My husband is a wonderful man, but hasn't a clue when it comes to "female disorders" (i.e. "vaginitis"), so didn't question the all-knowing Dr Rex. I, on the other hand, had MANY questions for the good doctor - especially about the suture still remaining - so made yet ANOTHER phone call to his office. And, because it was after hours, left yet ANOTHER v/m message! The following day I did not wait around for a return call (they'd already proved their lack of care and customer service in that area) and telephoned them just after they opened. This time the call was handed over to Dr Rex, who repeated his diagnosis of "vaginitis" and his prescription of "yogurt". I asked if vaginitis causes bleeding? (I know it does NOT). He said, "Sometimes." And when I asked about the suture he left in, if that was intentional? His response sounded more like a bumbling fool, "Oh, uh, I left a suture? Oh, uh, I thought I got them all. Well, uh, you can bring her back if you want me to take it out." IF I WANT HIM TO TAKE IT OUT??! NO, DR REX, WE WANT YOU TO LEAVE THE WIRE SUTURE IN!! DUH!!! Needless to say, we did NOT take Betty back to Dr Rex - we took her to our regular family vet, who gently removed the wire suture from Betty's abdomen, diagnosed conjunctivitis (Dr Rex ignored Betty's weepy eyes) and prescribed eye medication, and explained that Betty's vaginal bleeding - now subsided - was because she was going into "heat" when she had the surgery and her body was just finishing out the cycle. He also noted that the suture sites were irritated and swollen, and suggested we put a little Neosporin on them. Betty is fully recovered now and doing well - no thanks to Dr Rex in Highland, CA.

    I think Dr. Rex does care a lot about animals and tries to offer affordable solutions when possible. To Sooncome: yes you should have tried to force feed your puppy with pedialyte or gatorade, I had to do this many years ago for a shelter rescue. I did this for two weeks and she came around and lived for 17 years as healthy as a horse. So you do need to love your pet and give them whatever care and time that is necessary to make sure that they are healthy, if you are not willing to do that then you should not own an animal. Dr. Rex has hundreds of patients, the fact that there are only two haters on this site is a testament to the great care that he has given.

    He's a Good Vet. We've been taking our pets to Dr. Rex for almost the entire 30+ years he's been in practice here. An incompetent veterinarian wouldn't have been in business for this long and I might add, in the same location. A bad vet would have closed up shop and moved elsewhere to find new customers. The complainers probably aren't happy with any services they get from any business. I'll be none of them have much experience with pets either.

    Dr.Rex has been in this field for a long time so you might see that some of his going about things are very old fashion. He still goes to get more information on new things in the practice for the best of his patients. This also give owners a cheaper bill. He like to give owners that option of treating at home such as a new bland diet before making you have to fork out cash for anything because he has the most heart I have ever seen in a veterinarian. I have volunteered at many places around the area. He is the one you can go to from the minor things to bone surgeries(vets in the area refer him for his bone surgeries). I apologize for the inconvenience of his schedule in making appointment or getting a hold of him but he is a very busy man also working at devore. I promise that I will work my best to make you more satisfied in your next visit

    Nobody forced you to take your dog to this vet you should have just taken your dog to your regular vet so that you would'nt be here complaining about the improper care or treatment that your dog received from this vet.when a dog is adopted it's your dog, your responsibility & your choice where your dog gets their medical care, you only have to show proof that your dog has been spayed or neutered to the people you adopted this dog from, clearly you got a discount for the services your dog got from this vet & you got what you paid for.Hopefully your dog will make a full recovery & you will learn from your poor choice so that your dog will receive better medical care in the future.

    His receptionists are the most incompetant people on the planet. Not only were my requests for my puppy's respiratory infection outright ignored...but they had the nerve to blame the oversight on the "new girl." I took my dog back to "dr rex" 48 hrs later and he says, "the dog wasn't that sick when I saw him before." NO ###! He was a little sick that's why I wanted him treated...NOT IGNORED! Now he is more symptomatic and with more severity no thanks to dr. rex. I then was charged $30 for 7pills which cost 80cents each on the most expensive of pet med websites. I don't have time to wait for delivery so I bought the meds from "dr. rex." After a week of treatment and two vet visits my dog is no more healthy, and is now vomiting and has diarrehea and will not drink water. I called their office again and the receptionist had the nerve to try and tell me how to treat my dog over the phone! Does that person have authority/education/training/psychic ability to give medical advise from a professional office over the phone!? Hell no...it's a completely irresponsible act on the "dr rex" staff. She insisted on giving the puppy pedialyte...listen, the dog will not eat or drink ANYTHING so what am I to do...give the dog a pedialyte enima? NO...the receptionist should not be giving med advise over the phone! Period. That's the final straw...dr rex...YOU'RE FIRED!

    I very strongly disagree with the connotations of your blather rant that you concocted to implicate suppose incompetence or negligece of Dr Rex DVM. In your ridiculously hysterical story you basically inadvertently implicate yourself for gross negligence in providing proper care for your newly obtained dog. Instead of going to the doctor by yourself and get involved with the post surgery care you conveniently delegated your "wonderful" husband and decided to rely on the telephone contact with quite unrealistic expectations that you can be properly instructed via remote device. You could as well called Obama for his Health Plan assistance. You clearly neglected your dog in a first place waiting for up to 8 or 10 days before you brought the poor dog for post surgery check up in light of developed supposed complications of vaginal bleeding and swollen wound and stitched areas.
    If you would have brain of an ant and you would really care about the dog you would get your lazy behind back to the doctor office immediately suspecting dogs discomfort.
    You just gave an example of irresponsible, immature and mentally unstable owner who assumed ownership of the rescued dog to satisfy your own need for attention and not to really provide the necessary care for the poor animal. I already feel sorry for the poor dog that apparently fell out of the frying pan of the shelter predicament into the fire of the unstable household with self absorbed "Queen" exploiting her husband and the poor dog to bring attention to herself and her supposed expertise in diagnosing "female disorders" that your husband is clearly not an expert with. If he would he would recognized long time ago that he has a "psycho ###" on his hands with more serious disorder then simple vaginal bleeding and I am not talking about Betty.

    I and my family having been going to Dr. Rex for over 20 years. He has always been furthcoming, helpful, and easy to contact. He has done a variety of work on over two dozen of our cats and dogs. Perhaps the complainer was more of a problem customer who can never be happy with anyone. For one, we can see that she already beleives that she knows more than the vet. Anyhow, I cannot give enough compliment to the great work by Dr. Rex and his staff over the years.
