Puppy has gait abnormalities, plantigrade stance and throwing his front legs out to the side. Vet says these abnormalities were worstened from being confined in small area. Puppy bought with breeding rights. Two vets say puppy should be neutered to keep these traits from being passed on. She has about 20 females. I've been told this is a sign of a puppy mill. Does anyone have any information about this kennel? If so, please let me know.
Down Home Dachshunds is a beautiful Kennel and they treat thier dogs very well. I have been to her home and was able to see her dogs. You should call her if you think there may be a problem because she does give a 1 year health guarantee. I was told you would not send her any proof and would not return the puppy...Shame on You.
Down Home Dachshunds Keep up the great work!
This is truly unbelievable! Down Home Dachshunds is the most reputable Dachshund breeder that I know. She takes the utmost care of her dogs and all of her puppies are absolutely gorgeous! How dare you even begin to slander her and her dogs. Obviously you are looking for a freebie and the complaint should be under your name! You ought to be a shamed of yourself for slandering Down Home Dachshunds! Anyone wondering about this complaint fell free to call me I will be more than happy to vouch for Down Home Dachshunds and also have several other clients that will also vouch for her! I purchased both of my dachshunds from Down Home Dachshunds and was very pleased. The kennels were very clean and the owner was very imformative. My dogs are doing very well.
I bought my dog from Down Home Dachshunds about a year ago. I thought that the facilities were clean, neat and the owner obviously takes care of her animals. I was also given a year health guarantee. I have also referred Down Home Dachshunds to a friend of mine who just got her dog 3 months ago and is doing great. This is NO PUPPY MILL!

This is definetly not a puppy mill. I purchased my two puppies from Down Home Dachshunds almost 8 months ago and they are doing great. I went to the facility to pick them up and was very impressed. The dogs are very well taken care of and as well is the facility. Keep up the good work Down Home Dachshunds! Mary Ann Davis
Yes I have information on this kennel, and it is definetly not a puppy mill. Down Home Dachshunds produces some beautiful puppies. I have purchased my dachshund from there and have had no problems. I can't believe you would call this a puppy mill! Her place is very well taken care of and those are some of the cleanest kennels I have ever seen. I suggest you rethink what you are doing and clear this matter up with the truth! Down Home Dachshunds does not deserve this kind of treatment.
Downhome Dachshunds is a kennel that does produce many beautiful puppies and they are not a puppy mill, but they are not the best of breeders. As I was doing research about breeding and buying a puppy I found a website that listed qualities of a good breeder and beware signs of bad breeders. The list of the beware signs are as follows:
1. Have a large number of puppies from many breeds.
2. Have dogs that look nothing like the AKC standard.
3. Have unhealthy, listless, nervous or aggressive dogs.
4. Use sale slogans or haggle the price of their dogs.
5. Have no contact with those they sell their puppies to.
6. Will not provide health certificates or pedigrees.
7. Who don't register their dogs.
8. Have dirty or smelly facilities.
9. Keep their dogs in crates 24/7
10. Don't socialize their dogs.
11. Don't ask you questions or don't meet you.
12. Won't show you where dogs are kept.
13. Are unfriendly or short with you.
14. Won't provide records.
15. Don't know much about breed they are selling.
We bought a puppy from here, and he does kunckle and it is a disqualification in the show world. He has produced beautiful puppies, and the gait abnormalities are not always from their genes. A vet could be saying to neuter to make money.
A puppy mill is when a breeder has many breeds and dirty pet areas, which Downhome Dachshunds is not. Puppy mills are also all for money...not caring about bettering their breed.
Who filed this complaint needs to do more research on dachshunds, breeding, genes, and so on and so forth.
Sincerely,
MP
This breeder has gone above and beyond the call of duty. I agree with the lady who wrote the last post. She has listed a Puppy mill to a Tee. But I would like to add one more. A puppy mills breeds for profit and does not put the money back into their dogs. I happen to know Down Home Dachshunds just last year spent around $5, 000.00 to get Champion dogs. She is very concerned about bettering the breed where as a Puppy Mill would have spent that money on them selves. This breeder took the money from selling her puppies and invested in 2 Champions and several Champion sired ###. Any one showing dogs knows that Champions are very very expensive. I applaud thier efforts to better the breed.
We will continue to do business with Down Home Dachshunds.

I recently bought a dacshund from Robyn and I couldn't be happier. She is a good quality puppy with a great tempermant. I have no complaints about my baby at all. Robyn has done an excellent job breeding and potty training my baby.

I feel that one should really be careful about "labeling" a breeder as a Puppy Mill, as this is not only an insult to someone who is most definately not a mill, but can damage their reputation in the dog breeding world. That being said, I speak from experience as well as thoroughly researching prior to purchasing a dog, that Robyn is most definately NOT a mill. I purchased our male long hair mini (Charlie Jacob) from Robyn almost 3 years ago. I had researched quite extensively breeders for our dog, as this is a crucial step in finding a healthy dog that will blend with your family, other pets and live a long and healthy life. I found Robyn to be incredibly friendly, well informed and willing to answer any questions that I had regarding her home and her pups. I live quite a ways away from her home in Colorado, therefor was unable to "see" our dog prior purchase. I was very comfortable with Robyn and the home in which she breeds her dogs. Charlie arrived very healthy and clearly happy and comfortable with people and other animals. I have 5 children and other dogs and 2 cats. Charlie was at home almost immediately, never showing nervous tendencies or any signs of aggression. People meet him and as I hold him on his back and stroke his chin, they comment how incredibly calm and relaxed he is for a doxie. I feel that the first step in acheiving that type of personality in your animal, is where and how it is bred and where it comes from. I am a very particular person when it comes to pets, as they immediately become a part of your family from first sight, even before you bring them home. It is critical when purchasing an animal that you first do your research about the breed. Understanding that any abnormality is possible, even in the best of breeders, because we are dealing with "nature". Animals occasionally have flaws. Plain and simple. No matter how perfect the conditions. (re; health, our doxie has never been to the vet for any type of health issue, other than regular shots and check up). Secondly, you need to do your research about breeders and "get to know" them. We are already excitedly talking about purchasing our 2nd mini doxie from Robyn sometime next Springs and I would highly recommend her dogs to anyone I know that is thinking about a doxie. Please do your research about the breed, contact Robyn and ask questions and you can feel confident, that Robyn is a reputable breeder, cares very deeply for her animals, keeping her home and breeding area in the best of condition, and that you would be purchasing a healthy, well adjusted dog that will bring you years of joy.
Sincerely, Debbie C.

I bought my blue doxie from DHD about 4 years ago. Before I had the dog in my possession, Robyn made me aware that he had bald ears. She offered me other puppies but my heart was gone. My pup's name is Blue and he is almost completely hairless. I do not blame Robyn. i did some research about blue doxies and discovered that this could be a result of genetics. Blue has been neutered because I feel that it is my responsibility not to pass on the hairless trait. I love my doxie and I know that his tempermant is a direct result of his breeding and his early handling with Robyn. I would love another pup from her - no hesitations!
I drove 9 hours to get our Sadie Mae from Robyn. It was not a decision that we made in haste and have been truly pleased with our baby. She is one of the most intelligent pups I have ever seen and has the disposition of an angel. I saw her place personally and was amazed at the kennel she runs. I hope my pups live longer than I do, but in the case of ever wanting to get another Dachshund, it will be back to Mississippi as fast as I can go.
We bought our pup 5 years ago from Robyn and he is perfect. We bought him over the Internet and had him shipped. He was 12 weeks old when he arrived & settled in like he had lived with us forever. He's beautiful & loves everyone & everything thing. We plan to buy him a brother or sister soon and wouldn't consider any other breeder. Down home is the best.

I have 2 Doxies from Down-home. Both shipped to South Florida at 8/9 weeks of age. Both simply gorgeous and beyond lovable. Both bought as pets and lifelong companions. Both spayed/neutered at 7-8 months of age. The first sweet baby was for me and he is now 4 years. While he suffers from grass allergies (extremely common in this breed) he is perfectly healthy and simply gorgeous albeit a tweenie. I wouldn't change a hair on my guys head and he is the most perfect companion for me. I would be lost without him! We are bonded and I adore him. Because of this experience, I purchased a little female as a playmate for my boy and a companion for my hubby. Being a Doxie family gets even better with two!. They love snuggling under Doxie piles especially when their humans are also snuggled in. She arrived off the plane kissing everyone and soooo affectionate. Her crate was clean (tidy little girl) and also acclimated into our family as though she had always been with us. She is also healthy and outgoing for a Doxie. Stunning typey girl with no noticeable flaws. Our family is inseparable and my pair are well adjusted and very bonded. They love other Doxies with a passion (we have several friends with them also) and bring so much joy to our lives.
I worked in rescue for any years and I know the signs of a mill. Under Robyn, I can say that this was NOT a mill. My babies arrived perfect, reasonably potty trained for their age and have become more to our family than I ever dreamed. While I always support rescue first, I also recommend breeders who breed for the breed, the show/working rings for excellent traits and quality breeding which ensures the future of our breed. Without quality breeders, these breeds would cease to exist and that would be a horrible shame. Be careful who you label as a puppy mill especially as many pet owners are the cause of problems due to ignorance and refusal to follow breeder and vet advice. Environmental care can result in many problems that otherwise would have been avoided. I've never dealt directly with Annette, but based on her reputation and handling of this kennel, I would gladly purchase again. Babies bred for health and a lifetime of happiness with families who need them...
And a rant: shame on the OP for not honoring her contractual obligation. The baby and breeder deserved more than you gave. And to the person above who Bred a Doxie with a disqualifying flaw? That is also wrong. Quality breeders would NEVER breed a less than ideal dog into their program. This is NOT what breeding is about. If you are not solidifying the positive traits that continue to reproduce quality, while improving the breed in physical traits, health and sound mind, than you are contributing to the problem. Puppy mills can also be poor breeders with one breeding dog. Having full papers does not mean you have to breed. Many breeders place prospective breeders as neutered pets for minor flaws let alone a clear disqualifying physical flaw. Shame on you!
We purchased our black Doxie almost four years ago, and she has not only been a perfect companion to both of us, she is amazing. We had issues with United Airlines (dog did not arrive on the flight she was supposed to, it was obvious she had been put back into the crate, with no papers, invoice, or any thing else), but that was not DHD's fault. My only regret is that Robyn advised us that our dog was so close to her sister, that we really should consider taking both dogs. After much consternation (on my part) we elected not to, and I regret that decision to this day. While I don't believe I could ever replace my Doxie, when she is gone, we probably will not get another one, strictly due to the pain of the loss! If I was to get another one, DHD is the only place I would look!
Four years ago we purchased our long hair chocolate female from DHD and she is precious. She is quite intelligent, social and just adorable. We did a great deal of research before making our decision. On the day we were to pick up Cocoa our plane was delayed in New Orleans. Robyn met us halfway and brought our bundle of joy to us. We would definitely purchase another baby from DHD. Anita in Florida.
We got a long hair from DHD 3.5 years ago. We had just lost our beloved Taz to a neurologic problem. My wife searched to find a pup that looked like Taz and found Robyn. They emailed for two weeks and Robyn sent pictures and videos of the pup we now call Willie. As it would have been a 12 hour drive to get him, he was flown to us. He arrived healthy and happy and immediately joined the family. He has been neutered as he is a pet not for breeding or show. He is spoilt rotten and as doxies go stubborn as a mule. Robyn takes great care of her dogs and pups. Anyone who would call her a puppy mill is crazy. She loves the dogs. We know what we are talking about. Willie is our 5th Doxie in 20 years. Sadly they age and he is the only one we now have along with a Sheltie. He is now almost 4 and has never had a heath issue. The other 4 we had we spent thousands on at the vet over the years. While he is still young, he has never been to the vet other than normal scheduled visits. We don't have children. So he is one of our babies. If the time comes and we decide to get another (my wife has talked about it), Robyn will be the first on we contact.
